Dick B.:
I was thinking that the Finns pronounce all vowels...
Well you got that part right, absolutely!
and Sauna was pronounced Sow oo na with the oo's pronounced as in boot?
Certainly not! The "a's" are of course pronunced like "a's", not like "ow"!
Thus: sauna: "sau-na", with the finnish "a" pronounced as in "arm" or "car" or "father", if perhaps a bit shorter, and the finnish "u" pronounced as in "bull"or "pull".
Incidentally, the "au" here is actually a dipthong - which in finnish may only occur in the first syllable (except those ending in -i, which can occur anywhere). Elsewhere, such vowel combinations are not dipthongs, as they belong to separate syllables!
There are actually two kinds of dipthongs. The first letter is slightly louder in the "falling" dipthongs (ai, ei, oi, ui, yi, äi, öi, au, eu, ou, ey, äy, öy, iu), while the second letter is slightly louder in the "rising" dipthongs (ie, uo, yö).
