Mary Drew at Pasty Central on Monday, May 10, 2004 - 06:57 am:

Bill Haller spotted a spectacle on the shores of Lake Superior. He reports from the north side of the "irons" at Bete Grise, that all the birch trees along the channel were felled within two days time! Now that is truly a busy beaver and by the looks of it, a hungry one as well. I guess I never realized that all that gnawing they do is to for food, in addition to using the debarked limbs to build their dams. Hope it's not trying to dam up the Mendota Channel! :->

By Larry-IN on Monday, May 10, 2004 - 07:02 am:

Amazing work!....must be getting ready for quite a dam!

By Roudy Mi on Monday, May 10, 2004 - 07:40 am:

Beavers front teeth grow continuously thus they have to chew to wear them down; keep them tuned up as it were or tuned down?

By moi on Monday, May 10, 2004 - 08:12 am:

gasp! can't you hear the trees crying? Neat pic.

By Ray Ignatowski, Macomb MI on Monday, May 10, 2004 - 09:05 am:

Too much work for me this morning. Time for a nap.

Dave,Tn,just heard from Russ that you have been in the hosp.I sure hope and pray that you get well soon. Will keep you in my prayers! Fran

Nice picture but hate to see those beautiful birch down.

By Jeff M, FL on Monday, May 10, 2004 - 10:04 am:

Comment on the Bridge Cam view: I see that the grass has turned green! I can also see a daily change in the hue presented by the buds on the hardwoods. Soon that pink tone will give way to green leaves and I'll know that spring has definately reached the Copper Country. Best keep those hungry beavers away!

By shelly/Yankee in Texas on Monday, May 10, 2004 - 10:20 am:

Mrs. Beaver must have wanted to do some serious remodeling this Spring! WOW!

Good Morning from Texas!

By Win T. Wisconsin on Monday, May 10, 2004 - 10:25 am:

Does anyone have any information on the Bella
Vista Motel fire in Copper Harbor last week?

By Ron, Minnesota on Monday, May 10, 2004 - 10:44 am:

The party responsible for cutting these trees should upgrade their cutting device to include a new Oregon chisel saw chain.

By Mary Drew at Pasty Central on Monday, May 10, 2004 - 10:45 am:

I don't have particulars, but the fire was contained in the office/owners residence building. My hubby was in Copper Harbor yesterday working on our Lions Club Mother's Day Dinner and snapped some shots for me.

By Dianne, Chicago Burbs on Monday, May 10, 2004 - 10:47 am:

I wish I knew about the fire at the Bella Vista as well. I've checked the on-line newspapers from the area and can't find out anything. I've been going to Copper Harbor since I was a kid and the town wouldn't be the same without it!

By Dianne, Chicago Burbs on Monday, May 10, 2004 - 10:50 am:

Thanks Mary for the Bella Vista information, especially the pictures! You must have posted it the same time as my request. Hope no one was injured and thankful that it was only the office.

Mary says: Your wish is my command! ;->

By SDC, Ferndale, MI on Monday, May 10, 2004 - 10:56 am:

Dave H. in TN, hope you are on the mend...

We had beavers that use to dam up some of the ponds in back of our old farm which backed up in our fields causing some major food damage. I can't recall how we remedied the situation back in the early 60's.

Fran, hope you had a happy Mother's Day.

By Allouez Andre on Monday, May 10, 2004 - 11:08 am:

I have a copper post card with the following message in Finnish:

ILOISTA JOULUA

Rakkain ja vilpittömin mielin toivottaen
Mitä hauskinta Joulua ja
Onnellisinta Uutta Vuotta!

Can anyone translate it for me?

By Debbie, MI on Monday, May 10, 2004 - 11:36 am:

Hi Sheila and Pat:

Can't wait for you to get here to clean that house! The weather is still cold.

See you soon.

Happy Birthday Mary Drew, Have a good day!

By Alex Tiensivu, Georgia on Monday, May 10, 2004 - 12:18 pm:

I'm wondering if Gay still has that tiny little fire house, where someone has to go to the front door and turn a knob which turns on an old fashioned car alarm located on the roof. If I recall, it was pretty close to the smokestack. I remember seeing it from the porch of the bar, if I'm remembering correctly. (I REFUSE to say how I learned of this little knob and the sound it made when turned, 38 years ago).

By Alex Tiensivu, Georgia on Monday, May 10, 2004 - 12:21 pm:

...By the way, since so many of you know the Tiensivu's... Today, May 10th, is the 47th Anniversary of my adoption! Norman adopted me on this day in 1957!

By 1962, he injected me with the U.P. and that really made me a finn! :)

By Mr. Wheatman, South end on Monday, May 10, 2004 - 12:21 pm:

Ahh the American Beaver, Castor Canadensis, an assiduous artisan of barrage indeed. Much to the chagrin of the affected property owner, one must be impressed with the adroitness and tenacity with which he constructs his sanctum and the alacrity in which he does so.

By Fran,Ga on Monday, May 10, 2004 - 12:29 pm:

SDC,I remember those huge Beaver dams back there in the woods. Maybe someone else remembers better than me but I think the County or someone went in there and broke them up. If I remember right they used to cause the fields to flood.

Thanks Sue,I did have a nice Mother's Day! A day of REST ahhh!!

By Fran,Ga on Monday, May 10, 2004 - 12:37 pm:

Happy Adoption Day Alex!! Norman sure lucked out to get a special son like you. Of course I am a little prejudiced. LOL

By SDC, Ferndale, MI on Monday, May 10, 2004 - 12:57 pm:

Fran, GA
Cute critter those beavers but destructive to say the least.

My little Frankie bought me a purse for Mom's day out of his "snack" money. (he's my soon to be 2 year old adopted cat)....Now that I think o of it, he kinda looks like a beaver he's so fat!

Sunny and a "balmy" 74 here in Lower MI.

What a beauty of a day in the CC, in keeping with the topic of beavers, here's a lil something that may get a smile...

I was driving up the New York State Thruway Friday
evening when I saw a Motorhome with Virginia plates. On his bumper he had a "say yah to the U.P. eh?" sticker. Gave him the thumbs up!

By KA,MI on Monday, May 10, 2004 - 02:57 pm:

someone should trap those beavers this fall...exciting thing to get into

By IDK on Monday, May 10, 2004 - 04:06 pm:

Bella Vista Mike-

Do you know what caused the fire. Is the office/living quarters a total loss?

By CA in AZ on Monday, May 10, 2004 - 04:20 pm:

Go beaver go, you did a beautiful job! How interesting it is to see nature at work.

By walter p tampa on Monday, May 10, 2004 - 05:22 pm:

those dam beavers are at it again cute little guyes though

By Louan-Elk Rapids MI on Monday, May 10, 2004 - 05:41 pm:

Oh those beaver. You know, they only use the tops of the tree. They take the small branches, the ones they can chew off and carry. They leave the trunks denuded. These make perfect fence rails.

By Copper Harbor Fan, MI on Monday, May 10, 2004 - 06:15 pm:

My wife and I stayed in the Belle Vista for fall colors during 2002 and enjoyed it very much. The cabins have a wonderful rustic charm. I plan to return this fall.

By Bthecute1 on Monday, May 10, 2004 - 06:39 pm:

Seems to me that beaver, our diligent craftsman, as per Mr. Wheatman, has illusions of grandeur.

By Down State Dave on Monday, May 10, 2004 - 06:57 pm:

Bthecute1, I think the beaver has illusions of a REALLY BIG dam!

Which reminds me of the old shaggy story. Why did the duffer say HOOVER every time he hit a bad drive on the golf course? ------ Cause that was the biggest dam he could think of!

Great picture Bill.

Oh, and kudos to Wheatman as well.

By Bthecute1 on Monday, May 10, 2004 - 08:07 pm:

To Down State Dave. Maybe he/she was planning on having alot of little beavers, and was trying to be creative in building the dam. Can't you just picture all the beaver in the pond, hoisting that log on there shoulders, and marching in step, singing heave-hoooooooooo, away we gooooooooooooo!

By Kerry, Mi on Monday, May 10, 2004 - 09:24 pm:

I have some really good news today, I live down state here in Livonia and in my familys backyard was a Deer. I'm serious not a fake one that is a lawn ornament but a real one it was about 100 yards away from the back door of the house, eating on the leaves from the tree. I have a pic of it for anyone that would like to see it. It's a vary rare occurance to see them especially in a city environment.

By your ring sistah on Monday, May 10, 2004 - 09:41 pm:

Butch, thank you for the Birthday greeting. Was quite a surprise to see it posted here. You are quite clever! Thank you again, your sister, Pat.

By Ms Katie on Tuesday, May 11, 2004 - 10:10 am:

To Allouz Andre, (from yesterday's question)I've never seen another copper postcard like the one I got from my mother. It was sent to her at Christmas from her folks in Hubbell while she was a nursing student in Milwaukee. That was about 1930. I have it framed with it's envelope. May be something I could start collecting. Does anyone know how common they are?
