Another sign of spring's arrival is the seasonal pairing of the Mallard ducks, as they get ready to incubate their eggs. Joshua Soumis must have had his 'sneakers' on when he approached these two to get such a good photo op, without rousting them out of the marsh. If so, I hope they were waterproof! These guys are known as "puddle ducks" because they feed in shallow water, by upending and dipping into the water, rather than diving. Anyone worried about the arrival of the bug season, here in the Keweenaw, should encourage a flock of ducks to share their space. Did you know that their diet also consists of many kinds of insects, including mosquito larvae? Let's hope for a good population of Mallard's this year! :-)

Good morning to all !!

By steve the flying troll on Thursday, April 29, 2004 - 07:50 am:

Ducks in our neighborhood will literally sit in tiny mud puddles..........that is why we love the UP so much.........BIG PUDDLES..........

By wondering,mi on Thursday, April 29, 2004 - 08:04 am:

where is that picture

By Dave, Laurium on Thursday, April 29, 2004 - 08:09 am:

Quack quack quack quack quack!!! Do you know what happened when two ducks collided in mid-air......they had a "quack-up"!!

By Gerry,Mi on Thursday, April 29, 2004 - 08:21 am:

Must add this tidbit. We have a pair of Swan in our area and a male mallard duck has taken up residence with them. Beware geese though, the Swan aren't friendly to them.

By db on Thursday, April 29, 2004 - 08:25 am:

we raised 4 pets like this. Also saw a few east of Lake linden, near Clouthier farm, as well as mink & brook trout. You could see the trout zooming around in the creek!

By Dan in Fenton, MI on Thursday, April 29, 2004 - 08:26 am:

Nice picture. Makes me want to travel North. An awesome morning here in SE Michigan also. Mike in Redford probably agrees.

By Up Here on Thursday, April 29, 2004 - 08:42 am:

By Dan in Fenton, MI on Thursday, April 29, 2004 - 08:49 am:

Up Here; Great response! It's loaded, but you got me laughing and made my day! Now I've got to get back to the greed here.

By bjmi on Thursday, April 29, 2004 - 08:51 am:

I see someone else knows who Donald and Daisy are.Last week there we 8 swans in the lake in Bootjack.

By Clyde Elmblad...L'Anse, MI on Thursday, April 29, 2004 - 08:51 am:

A duck walks into a pharmacy and asks for Chapstick. The cashier says, "Cash or check?" and the duck says, "Just put it on my bill."
Quack Quack Quack...

By Roudy Mi on Thursday, April 29, 2004 - 09:24 am:

I think she is,but he isn't. One frosty chick.

By josh soumis on Thursday, April 29, 2004 - 09:32 am:

I took that picture on at the carp river in marquette after that really heavy rain. With all the flooding along the rivers its great for ducks.

By Roudy Mi on Thursday, April 29, 2004 - 09:36 am:

Was there ice there?

By in the burbs of Calumet on Thursday, April 29, 2004 - 10:00 am:

Good Morning from Texas!

I loved Clyde's joke! It quacked me up!

By Mohawk gal, MI on Thursday, April 29, 2004 - 10:42 am:

It sure was nice hearing the froggies the last few nights, another sure sign that summer is somewhat around the corner!!!

By JoAnne Stefanac, Washington State on Thursday, April 29, 2004 - 10:53 am:

When we first bought our new house, we had a pair of these that would come into our backyard. We think the previous owner used to feed them, though, as they would come up on the deck and literally "knock" on our sliding glass door with their beaks. Cute...the first time. Annoying after that. They quick that pretty quickly with the addition of a Golden Retriever to our household! Haven't seen them since.

By Up Here on Thursday, April 29, 2004 - 11:17 am:

Dan from Fenton; Where do we apply?

By shelly/Yankee in Texas on Thursday, April 29, 2004 - 11:39 am:

So whats the weather like today Yoopers?

By Curtis, Falls Church, VA on Thursday, April 29, 2004 - 11:53 am:

I love checking the photos and chat on this site. I don't check often enough... makes me too homesick for the U.P. I'm heading there on May 1st and can almost taste the pasty and feel the sauna already! Nice to see the ducks aren't having to break through any ice.

By anon/milw on Thursday, April 29, 2004 - 12:28 pm:

You're right about the mud ducks and the blackflies. At Lake Medora we have an active "duck mafia" and usually have few blackflies...not so other places where there are no ducks!

By Mary Drew at Pasty Central on Thursday, April 29, 2004 - 12:42 pm:

Editor's note: Please keep the jokes "children friendly". Thanks!wink

By Dan in Fenton, MI on Thursday, April 29, 2004 - 12:50 pm:

By shelly/Yankee in Texas on Thursday, April 29, 2004 - 01:15 pm:

So, whats the weather like today? :)

By anon/milw on Thursday, April 29, 2004 - 01:21 pm:

Thank you Mary for monitoring the site ... I know that I have underage relatives that access this site.

By Dave, Laurium on Thursday, April 29, 2004 - 01:22 pm:

Cloudy, cool (40*), weekend looks like more of the same, not too springlike, rain and snow possible on Sunday. Next weeks long range forcast looks fairly nice with temps gradually climbing int the upper 50's by end of week, all in all, typical Copper country spring weather. :(

By cal city,mi on Thursday, April 29, 2004 - 01:24 pm:

weather is cloudy.cold and gettig ready to rain again...

By uper1 on Thursday, April 29, 2004 - 01:32 pm:

GOOD WEATHER FOR DUCKS!!! ;>)

By troll with connections, Mi on Thursday, April 29, 2004 - 01:36 pm:

At the risk of scaring away some tourists. What is the price of gas in the Copper Country right now?

By uper1 on Thursday, April 29, 2004 - 01:44 pm:

By shelly/Yankee in Texas on Thursday, April 29, 2004 - 01:46 pm:

High of 82 today, lo 72 at night, chance of rain all weekend!
Our ducks are happy here too!

By shelly/Yankee in Texas on Thursday, April 29, 2004 - 01:48 pm:

Gas here in Houston, $1.67 for the regular grade.
Glad I got my plane tickets in January!

By Martha K., Pinckney, MI on Thursday, April 29, 2004 - 01:59 pm:

It's a typical springtime in lower Michigan anyway. We had a record low temp yesterday morning and we will be flirting with a record high today! As they say, if you don't like the weather wait a few minutes and it will change.

By Gordo in Grand Rapids on Thursday, April 29, 2004 - 02:25 pm:

Do you know what happens to ducks the fly upside down?

They quack up!

By BT,TC on Thursday, April 29, 2004 - 02:29 pm:

Yes it is summer today here in TC....but supposed to be winter again this weekend. Wearing short sleeves today...just for the fun of it. Nice pic...but it does look like ice to me....maybe they are stuck...thats why they didnt fly away...lol

By camwatcher on Thursday, April 29, 2004 - 02:38 pm:

So this duck walks into a pet store and says to the clerk, "Got any duck food?"
"No", says the clerk, "we only sell dog food and cat food."
"OK", says the duck and walks out.
The next day the duck walks in the store and says "Uh, got any duck food?"
The clerk once again replies, "No, like I told you, we only sell cat food and dog food."
"OK", says the duck and walks out.
The next day the duck walks in the store and says "Uh, got any duck food?"
The clerk says "Hey look, I told you two times already that we only sell cat food and dog food!"
"OK", says the duck and walks out.
The next day the duck walks in the store and says "Uh, got any duck food?"
This time the clerk yells "We don't sell any duck food and if you come in here one more time asking, I am going to nail your little webbed feet to the ground!"
"OK", says the duck and walks out.
The next day the duck walks in the store and says "Uh, got any nails?"
"No", says the confused clerk.
The duck says, "Got any duck food?"

Two Finns went duck-hunting with their dogs, but were having no success. Uno said "Heikki, What are we doing wrong? We don't have no ducks yet!"
Heikki replied, "I don't know Uno, maybe we're not throwing the dogs high enough!"

By crusin'thebackroads on Thursday, April 29, 2004 - 08:12 pm:
