Mary Drew at Pasty Central on Thursday, April 22, 2004 - 06:38 am:

Things have warmed up here in the Keweenaw by a few degrees, but we still have a ways to go before we can call it summer, that's for sure. Patricia Forgrave snuck a shot of a father/son moment on the fringes of Lake Superior. Good thing they bundled up. With the looks of the waves crashing on the surf, it's a bit windy, making the air seem even cooler than it really is by the big lake. Yes siree, it'll be a little longer before we can start talking heat index figures instead of wind-chill figures!

By Margaret, Amarillo, TX on Thursday, April 22, 2004 - 06:46 am:

A little windy here in West Texas. I can feel that "norse" wind coming off the lake though.

By Uncle John the Old Salt on Thursday, April 22, 2004 - 07:01 am:

How many sailboats/pleasure craft do you figure are out on that vast expanse on a day like today?

By Dom, Michigander in Germany on Thursday, April 22, 2004 - 07:14 am:

The big lake is looking her best steely gray.

Speaking of summer, we were always so happy when summer fell over the fourth of July weekend!!.

By Alfred on Thursday, April 22, 2004 - 07:34 am:

Summer???? I've got snow in the yard that can still be measured in feet! I don't think summer will be here for a long time.

By Tom on Thursday, April 22, 2004 - 07:37 am:

Uncle John..... none.

By Brent, Rochester, UPstate, NY on Thursday, April 22, 2004 - 07:47 am:

Yay for spring!
Just think, the black flies aren't far behind.
'Morning all.

By mj in mn on Thursday, April 22, 2004 - 08:15 am:

Actually it looks like a perfect day for a lake- side picnic with a thermos of hot coffe and a fresh pasty.

By Jen, St. Paul on Thursday, April 22, 2004 - 08:32 am:

Looks like a beautiful morning in Houghton/Hancock this morning, from looking at the bridge cam. Wish I was there....

By Lynn in A2 on Thursday, April 22, 2004 - 08:36 am:

I'm all for the coffee and pasty on the beach.
Too bad they closed the Toivola Lunch, Leona used to make a great pasty.

By Down State Dave on Thursday, April 22, 2004 - 08:48 am:

Nice picture Patricia. Trying to figure out where it was taken. Looks like Dad is standing on solid rock, not a sandy shore.

By Steve the flying troll on Thursday, April 22, 2004 - 08:56 am:

That looks like the red rock on the beach between Gay and Lac La Belle.

By Dave, Laurium on Thursday, April 22, 2004 - 09:17 am:

Lynn, the restaurant in Toivola has re-opened under the name 'The Feed Mill' I believe. Don't know who owns it, but one source said the food is good. I used to go to the Prickett Dam area for hunting and fishing, stopped at that restaurant, no matter what name it had, and it has had several over the years.

By mi on Thursday, April 22, 2004 - 09:37 am:

Isn't the feed mill in Tapiola?

By k on Thursday, April 22, 2004 - 09:43 am:

I LOVE the pictures on pasty.com. There are so many talented Yoopers.

However - one thing has always bothered me about the pasty.com shots - the horizon lines should be straight. Just put these guys into photoshop and use 'arbirtrary rotate'. A crooked horizon line is like nails on a chalkboard. This is a no-no taught on the first day of any photography or graphic design course.

I hope this criticism can be taking in the nicest possible way - because this is a great website!

By Dave, Laurium on Thursday, April 22, 2004 - 09:44 am:

OOPS...wrong 'ola', time for more coffee!

Heikki was sitting on a frozen lake, next to a big hole, ice fishing, with a huge pile of fresh fish beside him, when Uno approached and asked, "How'd ya catch all dem fish?" But Heikki's only reply was a soft, incomprehensible mumble. So Uno asked again louder, "How'd ya catch all dem dere fish?" Again, Heikki mumbled an incomprehensible reply but louder. Finally Uno shouted, "I'm asking ya one last time, Heikki, how'd ya catch all dem fish?" At that Heikki spit a fistfull of worms out of his mouth into his hand and said, "I tol' ya, Uno, ya gotta keep da bait warm!"

By PK, MI on Thursday, April 22, 2004 - 09:44 am:

Yes, The Feed Mill Cafe is in Tapiola. Sure would be nice to have the old Toivola Lunch back in operation though! Wasn't the Feed Mill called the Tapiola Diner a few years back?

By finnferrfunn on Thursday, April 22, 2004 - 09:46 am:

Yeh, I get those 'ola's' confused too!!

By finnferrfunn on Thursday, April 22, 2004 - 09:48 am:

Question...How many 'ola's' are dere in da UP??

By Tricia, Calumet, MI on Thursday, April 22, 2004 - 10:03 am:

To Steve the Flying Troll - you hit the nail on the head. We were at the park between Gay and Lac La Belle.

To K - Criticism well taken about the horizon line. I (and probably other contributers as well) have not had courses in photography or graphic design. If I had, I probably would have missed this photo op because I would have been too worried about "the shot".

Plus - I have a crooked head :)

By Lynn in A2 on Thursday, April 22, 2004 - 10:11 am:

I like the crooked horizon.
A crooked head may be very well adapted!

By muse on Thursday, April 22, 2004 - 10:46 am:

Great picture! I love the symbolism in this picture of a Dads role in protecting his child from all that would harm. Look on without fear.
Reminds me of Gods protection as well.

By Just my opinion. on Thursday, April 22, 2004 - 10:50 am:

The Horizon on Lake Superior is very seldom naturally straight. Maybe on a very calm day. Superior is nature at it's finest. Candid shots are the best because they are seldom perfect. Great Picture!

By LISA , MI on Thursday, April 22, 2004 - 10:56 am:

If we had straight lines in the horizon all the time we would not have such good time commenting on how crooked they are. By the way nice shot.

By danbury; germany on Thursday, April 22, 2004 - 11:30 am:

Not straight, horizontal was asked for, I think. Which it always is, except for those moments when there is too much stuff in the head and it get's all tipsy ...;)
Straight or horizontal or not, looks like a good wind to me - got to get my sailing-license renewed ...
... another great way of making the horizon go all tipsy ...

By Liz Benson, Pocatello ID on Thursday, April 22, 2004 - 11:51 am:

An enduring love of Lake Superior with its many moods begins in protective arms. That love becomes part of one's soul.....

By STEVE D. Berkley, MI on Thursday, April 22, 2004 - 12:20 pm:

The Keweenaw has its own special beauty, no matter what time of year! I used to spend most of my summers there/Ahmeek back in the '70s, I sure do miss getting up there as often as I wish. Lots of great people in the area as well.

By Old ME church boy on Thursday, April 22, 2004 - 12:23 pm:

One of the Boorman gals just wrote:

"An enduring love of Lake Superior with its many moods begins in protective arms. That love becomes part of one's soul..... "

Now that was worth checking in here today.

Thanks, Liz.

By Fisher on Thursday, April 22, 2004 - 12:28 pm:

The horizon is never straight because of the curvature of the earth, horizontal, Yes.

By Roudy Mi on Thursday, April 22, 2004 - 12:30 pm:

Check the bridge cam. The sun is reflecting off the roof of the old power house then in turn off the canel.

By ert, GA on Thursday, April 22, 2004 - 12:41 pm:

In a photographic shot, the horizon should appear horizontal and yes, straight. The curvature of the Earth is not apparent in such a small area.

By Dave - Colorado on Thursday, April 22, 2004 - 01:00 pm:

Due to the angle at which the photograph above was shot, if the horizon is set flat, the people will be tilted...

By Lyn R. on Thursday, April 22, 2004 - 01:08 pm:

The photo above looks straight.

k,
I'm sure the majority of pasty cammers do not take photography courses. Perhaps you could give us some more tips on how to capture better shots. Thanks in advance..

By curious, MI on Thursday, April 22, 2004 - 01:26 pm:

Does anyone know if Armour Sarkela's boat, "Hope" is at the museum as of now?

By shelly/Yankee in Texas on Thursday, April 22, 2004 - 02:13 pm:

If Troll is on today, I got flowers, a balloon, and a very expensive lunch today in appreciation of Admin/Asst day. Better late than never!

By Tricia, Calumet, MI on Thursday, April 22, 2004 - 02:23 pm:

Liz Benson - that was just beautiful what you wrote ("An enduring love of Lake Superior with its many moods begins in protective arms. That love becomes part of one's soul....."). It brings tears to my eyes.

By Jim B- Downtown Milwaukee on Thursday, April 22, 2004 - 03:16 pm:

To Steve D- Berkley,MI..... Go into the Pasty Cam Archives and pull up the beautiful 10/15/03 Bumbletown photo taken by Scott Laurie. Scroll to the right and you have Ahmeek. It really has'nt changed much in 30 years.... and the people are still great!!!

By Andrew, MI on Thursday, April 22, 2004 - 03:52 pm:

Is there any snow left in the UP?

By Steve, Eagle River WI on Thursday, April 22, 2004 - 04:09 pm:

Oh I see it now, the line of the top of his head and the horizon are straight there both crooked;')

By ace,tx on Thursday, April 22, 2004 - 04:17 pm:

Steve D.-
There is nothing better than the 4th of July in Ahmeek Park, my grandparents live in Ahmeek on Bollman St,(spelling?) In the park on the 4th you can visit with everyone from Keewanaw & see family. Everyone have great day.

By superior lover on Thursday, April 22, 2004 - 04:18 pm:

OK, so the earth is round, right? So, if the horizon is straight, it really isn't... right? Just love the lake anyway!

By superior lover, again on Thursday, April 22, 2004 - 04:19 pm:

Anyone notice the sandbar way off in the distance on the right? Love those sandbars.

By Heikki on Thursday, April 22, 2004 - 04:21 pm:

Da earth is round?????

By shelly/Yankee in Texas on Thursday, April 22, 2004 - 04:26 pm:

Heikki-

Not sure...remember a few days ago we had a picture of an explorer in the water and someone suggested he could see the end of the earth.....
Be careful out in da water eh?

By danbury; germany on Thursday, April 22, 2004 - 04:27 pm:

All those interesting things one can read on pasty.cam...

(Just browsed the archives - anything from botanic-lessons to the Titanic-desaster - really awesome!)

By Therese from just below the bridge on Thursday, April 22, 2004 - 05:13 pm:

Beautiful photo! The tilted horizon is because the photographer is leaning into the wind to keep from blowing over.

Just got back from a walk on the Lk Michigan beach on Sturgeon Bay (the one just west and south of Mackinac Straits); and although we had the cold wind off the water and surf, the sun was shining like it was July. Think I have a sunburn! First swim of the year for the dogs, not counting breaking through the ice in February (in shallow water thank God).

By maijaMI on Thursday, April 22, 2004 - 05:35 pm:

Wonderful gallery, Patricia. Calumet waterworks is spectacular!

By Waring my Flaim Soot on Thursday, April 22, 2004 - 05:39 pm:

The caption next to the photo that leads to this page should read:

"This being its 'winter ice gone, still mighty cold' mood!"

(replace "it's" with "its")

<Toivo sez>: Exception noted, Flaim. You may take the rest of the day off.

By shelly/Yankee in Texas on Thursday, April 22, 2004 - 05:40 pm:

I just looked back to yesterdays comments to see what I missed after I left from work. There were some really good definitions of SISU. Not only is Pasty Cam entertaining, its educational. :)

By Bthecute1, San Jose on Thursday, April 22, 2004 - 06:18 pm:

To danbury in Germany. I was just being sarcastic - facitious. ( Do I need a dictionary ) I am new to this website, and enjoy it very much. It brings back alot of long ago memories. I become upset if someone belittles a picture, even if it was made in fun. I guess I need to loosen up abit. Therefore, I am sorry if I offended you, or anyone else on this site. :)

By Liz, Pocatello on Thursday, April 22, 2004 - 07:13 pm:

Old ME church boy and Tricia,
Thank you for your comments. Tricia, my fingers wanted to fly before I even clicked on Big Picture this morning.

By Steve the flying Troll on Thursday, April 22, 2004 - 07:38 pm:

I could care less about horizontal or vertical, but I prefer horizontal.....I am so glad I figured out where the pic was taken. I only get up there every year on the 4th of July if I am lucky, but I run that rental car from Fanny Hoe to Jacobsville everytime............(Don't tell the Fake Lake Yuppies about the backside of the peninsula, or Jacobsville will be the next Aspen.)

Mimi and I can't see nuttin' wrong wit' dat horizon. Maybe the shoreline or dose clouds t'rew someone off? Very nice pic of our big lake.

By old digs on Thursday, April 22, 2004 - 09:25 pm:

Straight lines, tight lines, whatever! Just be thankful that
some of you can wake up to seeing Lake Superior each
day. It's been too many years since I have:(

By Gary, CO on Thursday, April 22, 2004 - 10:10 pm:

I've swam there in August and it's still not warm. After the brain-freeze, I'm just glad to see any horizon, straight, crooked, zig-zag or otherwise. (Hope I got the apostrophes right!)

By finnfishferrfunn on Thursday, April 22, 2004 - 10:19 pm:

One for the road...
The DNR officer goes down to conduct a surprise inspection as the fishermen come in from Lake Superior. He notices that one of the boats has many more fish than any of the others. He goes up to the fisherman and asks him how he caught all of those fish. The fisherman invites him to come out with him on the lake and he'll show him. So, out they head and shortly after, the fisherman picks up a stick of dynamite, lights it and throws it into the lake. "BOOM"...40-50 fish float to the top. The DNR officer can't believe what he has just witnessed. Aghast, he says to the fisherman, "You are is so much trouble, that is completely illegal, I am going to have to haul you in, arrest you, fine you...".

The fisherman listens for a little bit, leans over picks up another stick of dynamite, lights it, tosses it to the DNR officer and says, "You talkin' or you fishin'?"

By Ken and Mimi from da UP on Thursday, April 22, 2004 - 10:51 pm:

Has anyone seen the crescent moon with 'earthshine' just a ways below Venus? Just beautimous. Take a look toward the west. The 'earthshine' is easier to see (for me) with binoculars.

By Shirley Laurin, Michigan on Thursday, April 22, 2004 - 11:00 pm:

I, too, loved the comment from Liz concerning having "an enduring love of Lake Superior with its many moods". It really hit the nail on the head. I just have to get to the Copper Country this summer...I grew up in Gay. It truly is beautiful country.

By DAE MI on Friday, April 23, 2004 - 01:05 am:

Loved the picture, these photos should be just a glimpse of the day in the UP, I look forward each day to see what has been submitted. If you used Photoshop to correct each one,why not then just make them up with Photoshop....need another tree......want to change the color of the grass......bird a little dull.....cloudless sky....hit the right keys and we'll see Palm trees swaying in the breeze and sharks jumping in the lake.

The moon and Venus were a beautiful duo last evening, all caught up in the bare branches of a budding maple. "Frogs in the pools singing at night" and soon-to-be 'wild plum trees in tremulous white". Spring be here in the lower P.

By Connie - Colorado on Friday, April 23, 2004 - 09:39 pm:

Just go straight to the lake to see it. Or don't go straight. Whatever you like best!

By STEVE D. Berkley, MI. on Friday, April 23, 2004 - 10:08 pm:

Thanks "JIM B." - downtown Milwaukee. That is an excellent photo from Bumbletown, I've been up there a few times, but not in the fall.
TO "ace, TX" I have been to that 4th of July BBQ in Ahmeek Park, from 1970-1974, every year when I was in high school. My cousin Phil Demski owns 40 acres down 5 Mile Point Rd., about 3 miles out of town. I was last there 4 years ago with my 4 yr, old son. Have to try to make it this summer !
