Church in the woods    ...scroll down to share comments

Mary Drew at Pasty Central on Friday, April 16, 2004 - 07:22 am:

This little church was featured in 2001 on these very pages. But figuring we could all use a bit of peacefulness in our lives, thought we'd view it again, through Dan Brown's eyes. Mansfield Pioneer Church is between Crystal Falls and Sagola, on M-69. The small town of Mansfield was established in the late 1800's as a mining community, named for the mining company. The present church was rebuilt by the local Mansfield Historical Society, which was formed in 1973 and aptly named, "Mansfield Memories". Brings us all back to a simpler time, a simpler life... nice!

Good Morning
Happy Spring to all.
The weather downstate between Pt. Huron and Detroit has been beautiful. We are also going to have a sunny warm weekend. I've already hung 2 loads of laundry out on the line. Have a wonderful day

The 'Faith of our Fathers' - very nice way to start the day. Thanks very much for posting this shot.

May our Lord watch over and protect our troops serving all over the world today. God bless you all for your service to our country.

Enjoying the photo and the peaceful feeling I'm getting from it. I'm getting close to uprooting! I need the U.P. back in my life.

Photo is beautiful.

Reminds me of some of the CCC buildings and company houses on display at the Logging Museum in the eastern UP we visited last year. I put some of the pics on my computer at work and people ask "Are you remodeling your house?"
We can't wait to get back for a visit.

We all have crosses to bear; let's help one another carry the load. My crosses are minimal right now, so I can reach out to someone else, thankful for those who helped me.

By Down State Dave on Friday, April 16, 2004 - 08:29 am:

Nice picture Dan. Wonder what the inside looks like?

Our original Pasty Cam photographer, Jonathan Hopper, visited there a couple of years ago:

Nice photo for Easter week. Let's not forget.

By Down State Dave on Friday, April 16, 2004 - 08:56 am:

Thanks for the picture of the inside! Evokes images, in my mind, of simpler times. One can almost see the buggies, with horses attached waiting outside the door.

Combining church with a new fishing season, a local clergyman friend told me this one some time back: Walk On Water
Three clergymen were sitting in a boat, fishing.
"I'm thirsty," said the first. "I'm gonna go get myself a Coke." So he got out of the boat, walked across the water, and came back with his Coke.
"Ooh, that looks good," said the second and got out of the boat. He walked across the water, got his Coke, and came back.
"You're right," said the third. "I think I'll get one too." He steps out of the boat and sinks like a rock.
"Hey," said the first clergyman to the second, "should we tell him where the rocks are?"

A beautiful little church. I would like to check it out when I visit the UP this summer. Is it open to the public? Do they have regular services there? Perhpas someone knows.I will look for your response.Thank you.

By J on Friday, April 16, 2004 - 09:51 am:

Off the subject but I have a question. How can I get rid of the ladybugs that seem to be taking over my front porch today??? The warmer the weather gets the more I have. They stink and are a nuisance. Any ideas? Thanks.

By UP_gal on Friday, April 16, 2004 - 10:08 am:

Are they "true" Ladybugs? Or Asian beetles ( more orange and they nip ) They begin to get active in the first few warm days of spring. I have never seen an insecticide recommended for them. Most gardens just sweep them up and put them in the garden. They love to eat aphids and other pests that damage our flowers. A gentle Dust Buster, perhaps?

By J on Friday, April 16, 2004 - 10:17 am:

I think they are the Asian beetles. I just vacuumed the porch and 5 min. later they are back. It's gross and I want them gone! I have seen them around the house all winter but now with this warmer weather they are reallly coming to life. I like things clean and neat so this really gets to me.

By UP_gal on Friday, April 16, 2004 - 10:30 am:

I agree. They can also create some smelly "ladybug mulch" in the vacuum bag. They often accumulate where there is a little moisture. Such as condensation on the top of a windowpane? I have never seen a way to be rid of them 100%. Oh, you may think you have swept them up and they are gone in the summer. But next sping...a whole new crop. They probably have a small hole somewhere that they crawl in each fall so they can over-winter in a nice warm house. Gardeners love 'em ! ( Sure wish they'd show up and take 'em all ) LOL

By Scott Irwin W8UFO, Evanston, IL on Friday, April 16, 2004 - 10:42 am:

Anybody know anything about the organ/piano?

By Downstate Yooper on Friday, April 16, 2004 - 10:52 am:

The University of Kentucky Entomology Department has a page summarizing the Asian Lady Beetle (Harmonia axyridis)

According to Cornell University ,The USDA is actually responsible for the prevalence of the bug in North America.

Church in the Wildwood. Reminds us to reflect on slowing down and taking time to remember our Heavenly Father and his goodness to us in these fast paced days. Thank you.

By Alfred on Friday, April 16, 2004 - 12:40 pm:

I think it's interesting how the topic can change so radically and quickly on this site!

By yooperwannabe/IN on Friday, April 16, 2004 - 12:59 pm:

Alfred, that's just one of the many reasons why I like this site so much...as long as everyone plays together nicely.

By shelly/Yankee in Texas on Friday, April 16, 2004 - 01:12 pm:

Here, here! :)

By LOL on Friday, April 16, 2004 - 01:55 pm:

Then, I have to say I love the idea of the simplicity of the past. This is a beautiful little church. But, I still wouldn't trade what they called Dentistry back then for what there is today... just sayin'.... other than those practical things, would love a "trip back in time" to attend a service when it was first built.

By Dave, Laurium on Friday, April 16, 2004 - 01:58 pm:

Who's on first??

By shelly/Yankee in Texas on Friday, April 16, 2004 - 01:59 pm:

Chair, Chair? How'd it get under there?

By Dave, Laurium on Friday, April 16, 2004 - 02:01 pm:

Another picturesque church is 'Lady of the Pines' in Copper Harbor, and I know they offer services, at least in the summer months.

By BT,TC on Friday, April 16, 2004 - 03:22 pm:

The Jacobsville Lutheran Church is awesome too! Fond memories of Sat eve services held there in the summer. Maybe they were Sun eve....who knows...it was summer...lol

By shelly/Yankee in Texas on Friday, April 16, 2004 - 04:13 pm:

I think yesterdays picture may be just one of those Unsolved Mysteries that we'll never really know about. We'll always have our speculations, but will we ever really know?????

By finnferrfunn on Friday, April 16, 2004 - 04:16 pm:

It may have been a Y.T.!

By Jo Ann in Iowa on Friday, April 16, 2004 - 04:36 pm:

Just took my daily look at the BridgeCam. The bridge has been raised. Does that mean snow mobile season is over?

By mel on Friday, April 16, 2004 - 04:46 pm:

Oh, wow!! Is the snow really gone?! Two years ago today it was 98* there!

By Therese from just below the bridge on Friday, April 16, 2004 - 04:49 pm:

Another clergy-and-water joke: A minister arrives at his new church on the day of the annual summer picnic. The elders invite him to row with them over to the island where the festivities are in full swing. They decide to see if he is a drinker or not. Half way across the rower stops and says, "Oh no, we left the beer back in my truck!" And they all turn to the minister to see what he says. He answers calmly, "I don't drink, but I'll be glad to fetch it for you." Then he steps out of the boat and walks across the water to shore. They look at each other in astonishment, then one says, "Wouldn't you know it! They sent us a minister who can't even swim!"

To Mary Frank....Yes, the Mansfield Pioneer Church is open to the public at all times. We do not have regular services. It is mostly rented for weddings and special occasions. We do have a summer service towards the end of July and a Christmas Service usually the second week of December. No electricity...lamp light only. Organ is a working pump organ. For more information, please contact me at e-mail{pdishaw@up.net)
