We've had photos of deer in the park - - deer riding bikes - - deer in the woods - - deer in the house - - but I think this may be a Pasty Cam first: deer on the rooftop! Lynn K. snapped this photo after her kids got on the school bus and she was getting ready to leave for work. You may ask what this fellow is doing up on the roof if he's not chauffeuring Santa around? Seems this wily creature found the perfect way to get at the buds higher up in the trees. Admire that animal ingenuity!

Looks like a "Hoof on the Roof" photo. ;0)
Must be someone's pet by the red necklace that it is wearing. This is a great one!

By James in Wisc on Saturday, March 27, 2004 - 09:15 am:

Good Morning from SW WI.
Spent last few days in Norway, MI; Great to be in the UP again.

My 26th. birthday party (Aug-77) was at the location where yesterdays photo was taken. Eagle Harbor hasen't lost any of its charm.

It was a great day to be alive; lots of friends, food and plenty of "spirit".

Still a couple of days till april foolsday...?
However, funny shot - wonder if he/she could be persuaded to sweep the snow of the roof?

By Kevin K. Lodi, CA. on Saturday, March 27, 2004 - 09:34 am:

Good Morning!
My vote for top three deer pictures.....
3. deer on the roof
2. deer in the house
1. deer on the bike
The guys at work come in to my office every morning to see the picture of the day,I tell them "Only in Michigan."
Have a good day all.

By Peg in Green Bay, WI on Saturday, March 27, 2004 - 09:37 am:

I've seen goats on the roof at Al Johnson's restaurant in Fish Creek, WI. But this is a first for a deer on a roof. Great pic!

By Renee in AL on Saturday, March 27, 2004 - 09:51 am:

Cute photo! I wonder what is around the deer's neck and who put it there though?
I have a request....please send some cooler weather down this way as it was 83 here yesterday! Being from up North myself, (Chicago area), I am not used to temps like this in March!
Hope everyone is having a good weekend!!
Best wishes,
Renee in NE AL

By Patt on Saturday, March 27, 2004 - 09:51 am:

Even to my amatuer eye the "necklace" looks like an add-in. Other than that the photo is very believeable.

By Homesick on Saturday, March 27, 2004 - 10:00 am:

Looks like a Hunters saftey orange vest around his neck.

By MI on Saturday, March 27, 2004 - 10:37 am:

This must be the deer that was bottle fed in Bootjack last summer. It is named Tinkerbell and is very tame.

By John in Port Huron, MI on Saturday, March 27, 2004 - 10:42 am:

Neat photo! It's amazing just how well the deer look after a long northern winter. I think that necklace your seeing is a few leaves on the tree. What do you think?

By Mary Drew at Pasty Central on Saturday, March 27, 2004 - 10:51 am:

Back to the discussion a few days back. It was mentioned that Nan Kuivanen wrote her story about being stranded out on the ice, back in 1982 for the Michigan Out-of-Doors magazine. I've requested a copy of the article and will be receiving it by mail soon. Anyone interested in reading it can email me.

By Vanessa Calumet on Saturday, March 27, 2004 - 10:58 am:

Oh Ok... LOL That's all I have to say for that picture. LOL

Maybe he wants to shovel the roof???

By Trapper UP on Saturday, March 27, 2004 - 11:20 am:

By mickey, mi on Saturday, March 27, 2004 - 11:35 am:

Mary, thanks for researching the Nan Kuivanen story. A friend showed me the article several years ago and I made a copy for myself, so was sure of the date it was printed. I was not sure how to contact Michigan Out-of-Doors for you folks, so thanks again for doing that.

That's a MAGIC deer!

Pardon my spamming the discussion, but it should fit in well.

My newest auction is available,
visit this page at ebay:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3905392876&category=529

Or just go to ebay and search for
"Yooper Quarter".
It's not as fancy as the one we drew up the other day, but it's much funnier. Designed with my love of the UP in mind.

How about the story and picture of the deer in the sauna?
That appeared in The Finnish-American Reporter last winter.
As I recall, Lori Stingle from Tapiola rescued a deer from
the icy Otter River and brought it into her sauna to warm up
and return it to the wild.
Now how's that for a deer story?

I was also fortunate to know Nan Kuivanen.
She made the best Pannukakku!
Nan's story also appears on pages 172-174 of:
Pelkie, its past and present / [compiled by
Sturgeon Valley Historical Society, Inc.].
L'Anse, Mich. : L'Anse Sentinel, [1990].
The Michigan Tech Archives and the
Finnish-American Historical Archives at Finlandia
both have a copy of this book.

Hi Kathie, SD!

Watch, someone will spoil the fun. They will say you have to have a permit to have this kind of animal.

By Lowell MO. on Saturday, March 27, 2004 - 07:40 pm:

Is this the Michigan Outdoors that used to be on years ago on one of the Detroit stations?? I can remember Mort Neff used to have it. My brother got to be on his show one year as he had brought the biggest buck across the bridge and it was the 2nd largest in the state that year. If I remember right the largest was shot somewhere around Lansing. They also used to have a Carp shoot every year south of Detroit that we used to go to.

By James-Breckenridge on Saturday, March 27, 2004 - 08:00 pm:

Let's go, PREDATORS!!!!!!!

We OWN the wings!

By JBK Chesaning MI on Sunday, March 28, 2004 - 01:28 am:

Lowell MO...because of some legalities, Michigan Outdoors is now Michigan Out-of-Doors. Headquartered in Bath, MI and seen on PBS stations. Mort Neff has been gone for many years, but he lives on in many of our memories.
