In Memory:

Dr. Ralph Cooper
Dennis Smith
Charles Eugene Swinney
Martha Elizabeth Heide
Jim Chappell
Shirley Borsum
Keith Baratono
Naomi Johnson
Lillian Pearce

This "Leap Day" provides an extra 24 hours to share memories of some special people who have passed through this life. You are welcome to add the name of someone you would like to remember.

Just a personal note about 3 of these individuals. Two of our Eagle River neighbors passed away this month, Dr. Ralph Cooper and Lillian Pearce. Both of these folks were an inspiration in their own way. I'll never forget Mrs. Pearce splitting wood out in her yard, in spite of the weather and the years. Naomi Johnson served on the board of directors at Still Waters for some time, always an enthusiastic supporter of our efforts. We're thankful for such friends, who enriched the lives of those who knew them.

Blessings on all those who have passed or
have had some loved one pass. What a triple
conjunction day: end of month memorial, leap
day, and maybe a shoebox memory; whata ya
say Charlie? Could you squeeze an old shot
in too? sort of as a bonus?

By Scott,Indiana on Sunday, February 29, 2004 - 11:58 am:

I would like to add James D. Garvey of Lansing He was born October 24,1929 passed away February 6.
An Irish Blessing....
May the roads rise to meet you
May the wind be always at your back
May the sushine warm your face
And until we meet again,
May God hold you
In the palm of His hand.

By D.Hiltunen -Smoky Mountains TN. on Sunday, February 29, 2004 - 12:25 pm:

My deepest sympathy to family of Shirley Borsum. Her & husband Bob,who has also passed for some years now too, were our neighbors on Ave.F in Dollar Bay.If i remember right they bought the home that used to belong to Porky Franz,& kept the garden going he had between our house & theirs, where as a child growing up with the Borsum son's we sneaked a tomato, carrot,or a handfull of greenbean's. Then go to the Philip's orchard for a juicy green apple,or plum.

By Ellen, Mi. on Sunday, February 29, 2004 - 01:17 pm:

What a Peaceful Picture! My mother was born in Calumet in 1915. Family Name "Odgers"Olver"and on my Dad's side, "Collick". Mom passed 7 years ago and by me visiting here every morn, it is a great comfort. Pasties were a great part of my growing up and I was glad that we had the chance to visit back in 1985. She saw the homes she had lived in and we enjoyed Tony's Pasties and Saffron Bread. Thank you for letting me express my thoughts.

By Bob L'anse Mich on Sunday, February 29, 2004 - 01:20 pm:

i would like to add Marian M. Snyder a devoted mother and well liked person by all, who passed away on feb. 18, 04 . She made a strong fight against cancer, and loved to tour the whole u.p. and enjoy it's sites. Now she can see it from above ,she will be missed.

By Donna on Sunday, February 29, 2004 - 01:54 pm:

Jim Chappell...what or how can anyone write anything that would describe or honor him enough? He was one of the most honest, hard working, dedicated men this area has ever had the honor of calling one of "their own". God's Peace, and Fly High.

By maijaMI on Sunday, February 29, 2004 - 02:16 pm:

Charlie, thank you for moving the debate about logging to a separate "discussion" page!

By Bill Denning, Texas on Sunday, February 29, 2004 - 03:00 pm:

Lillian Pearce was a sweet lady, and a childhood friend of a close family friend of ours, who was her neighbor in Eagle River. For many years Lillian made & sold thimbleberry jam, and she would always save some for me, and ship it in the late summer or early fall.

But what I remember most is hearing kind words describing fond memories of a friendship that spanned nearly 80 years.

By Ms. Katie on Sunday, February 29, 2004 - 06:55 pm:

I'd like to acknowledge the passing of the "wild woman" wife of a favorite brother-in-law Norman, in Colorado Friday. It was a long struggle, girl, just wish I could have been there for you. Effie was the only woman I've known who acted rough as a cob and invented her own "cuss" words. But she was a treasure under it all. Loved her. Lord be with you.

Emma Ostling of Ontonagon, lately of Marquette. A great lady who learned to love football so she could be close to her grandchildren. So down to earth and now in heaven.

By cupid on Sunday, February 29, 2004 - 09:24 pm:

What a wonderful surprise to see the desktop photo for I've had for the last two weeks as the photo of the day. But I believe I'll have to change it to Hallers sunrise #1 since this will now be associated with people who've passed away. While we're remembering people, I'd like to add my father, Capt. Russell H. Bergh. Dad was so acclimated to living aboard anything that sailed the Great Lakes, he actually walked with a list on shore.
Also, I bought and am living in Coleen O'Neals house. I remember talking with her one time at Fitzgeralds about her garden. She was very enthusiastic about her plantings and I am going to plant a hydrangea in memory of her in my yard.

By Ken and Mimi from da UP on Sunday, February 29, 2004 - 09:54 pm:

Speaking of 'leap year day'. Whose idea was it to add an extra day to February? Wouldn't it have been a lot nicer to add it to July or August? Can we get this changed?

By Ken from da UP on Sunday, February 29, 2004 - 10:05 pm:

DH, Temecula, CA, I'm guessing you worked in Chassell during the 70's? Seems like we were always running to Butch's for something (I hate to use the word repair). Those Saab's (all 7 of them, but whose counting?!)were a blast to drive, just wish I'd taken better care of mine instead of driving it like I was in a continual road rally! Dad loved those cars.

I would like to honor the memory of by brother, Army 2nd Lieutenant Seth J. Dvorin. My brother was killed on February 3, 2004 in Ishkandariya, Iraq by and IED (improvised exploding device). He was a true hero. He saved the lives of 18 men before his body bore the brunt of the blast. He is a loyal brother, son, husband and friend. He will sadly and truly be missed by plenty.

RIP Oh Brave One...We Love You...Love your Big Sis Rebekah

By Lori Flanders, Iowa on Sunday, April 24, 2005 - 10:55 pm:

Love the memories from the UP. I went to Ontonogan elementary school in the 60's,left in about 67, would've graduated with the class of 73. There was six of us Fredrickson kids living peacefully in one of the richest areas of the US. If you were educated in the UP during that time, you had a great education. I'm a teacher now and as I look back, I'm really thankful for where I came from. Lori

By Donna, Illinois on Friday, June 24, 2005 - 11:22 am:

I happened upon this by doing a google search. It's fantastic. I will add it to my favorites. Am a Yooper wannabee, former NMU student who never wanted to leave. Still vacation in the UP and go on waterfall searches.

You can take a person out of the UP, but you can't take the UP out of a person.
