Tahquamenon Falls have been featured a number of times here on the Pasty Cam. We've seen the falls in the summer and in the winter, but I don't recall ever seeing this side of her. Rose Tuttle takes us to the spot where your walk to the falls viewing area begins and ends. Looks like she even cleared off the bench for us to take a rest before moving on! Could this be the famous bench from "Three guys on a bench", back in Dec. 2002?

First post of the day!!!!!

I took some great photo's of "the falls" in winter too, (yes Sarah I'll fix the picture frame) I remember "hiking in" to the lower falls during a storm years back - got great photo's of the upper falls, but the combination of "white out conditions" and that dusk fell upon me quicker than snow accumalated, left nondiscript images of the lower falls (then they didn't plow the area to the lower and it was quite a hike in and out... point being having been there and done that - I truly appreaciate the effort exihibited here captured by images, by those who took them...

By RGG - Cedar Rapids on Monday, January 26, 2004 - 11:38 am:

Would someone be so kind to phonetically spell "Tahquamenon"

Thanks a bunch!

By julie b., MI on Monday, January 26, 2004 - 11:39 am:

Back in the early 70's we went to the Falls over Christmas break. NOTHING was plowed out back then! We hiked all the way in to the upper falls and kept seeing the top inch of a vertical board in the snow. Finally we stopped to investigate and discovered that the almost-buried board was the back of the old style benches! The snow was panked down so good we were walking on top rather than wallowing {we didn't have any snowshoes back then!} Thanks for the great pictures! Nice color absorption!

By wayne GHMich on Monday, January 26, 2004 - 11:50 am:

To RGG spelling and phonics are not my strong suit, but here goes, Tahquamenon, all the vowels are short, Ta- Ta, qua- quaw, men- men, on- on, Tahquamenon. Don't know that I was much help.

I've got a couple questions. First, is there a way to just view the latest uploads into the guest galleries. I'm on one of those old dial-ups, and it takes a long time for me to go page to page to see who's been adding to their albums. I'm just curious if I'm missing an easier way to see the new pics in the guest albums.
My other question is does anyone happen to have a picture of the old hardware on Hecla street that used to have the faucet hanging out the front. I would really really appreciate a picture of that old faucet. Thanks in advance!!
And....great photo! We've enjoyed that winter hike into the falls before. Truly breathtaking.

Editor's note: At the present time there is not a system to view just the latest uploads into the guest galleries, but it is something we are aware of the need for and are working on.

HAVE THE FALLS ALWAYS HAD THE COPPER COLOR, EVEN BEFORE THE MINING?

By RG on Monday, January 26, 2004 - 02:22 pm:

Thanks RD

For JL in Cincinnati:
Taken from http://www.exploringthenorth.com/tahqua/tahqua.html

"The Tahquamenon rises from springs north of McMillan and drains an area of more than 820 square miles. From its source, it meanders 94 miles before emptying into Whitefish Bay. The amber color of the water is not rust nor is it muddiness. It is caused by tannin leached from the Cedar, Spruce and Hemlock in the swamps drained by the river. The extremely soft water churned by the action of the falls causes the extensive amounts of foam which has been the trademark of theTahquamenon since the days of the voyageurs."

I knew it wasn't from copper mining, but wanted to make sure you got a proper response. :)

Oh me and a couple friends went there this summer. Its very loud from the falls. Never been there in the winter, though. :)

Sharyn in Howell:

I guess it all depends on the size of picture. Some take a long time if they are big... like these ones. Contact the web master of the site. I'm sure they'd love comments/suggestions. :) Dail up can be slow, especially for pictures :(.

It's snowing here in northern Illinois, but we don't get alot of snow anymore. Global warming? It seems like the UP doesn't get as much snow either. It's comforting to watch the snow fall. I'll bet the "seasonal" roads are fun now, eh? Or do they get cleared at all? I miss the UP....do you natives mind when we come and live up there?
I like the "flannel shirt" sort of life style. Too much traffic and hurry in Illinois.

By Debbie, Il. on Monday, January 26, 2004 - 04:48 pm:

I'm from northern Il. too. We might get enough snow today to cover the brown grass, but shoveling will be needed. Hey, UP...send us some pasties and a side of snow!

Hello,
I enjoyed the pasty discussions from a few days ago. I understand that Ken Bylkas had made an aluminum tart cutter years ago. I could really use one to help me put my good Copper Country jam into some tarts. Can anyone out there help me?

By k on Monday, January 26, 2004 - 06:49 pm:

Jurmo's Hardware had the big ol' faucet...right ??
As for a pic, can't help you there.

By Jim Copper Country on Monday, January 26, 2004 - 07:28 pm:

TAHQUAMENON......it rhymes with PHENOMENON, as the Lure Book people used to note, back in the 1950s

By Mary Lou on Monday, January 26, 2004 - 07:34 pm:

I do not know anything about tart cutters but I remember Kenny Bylkas and his brother Carl from Bootjack. They were two of the nicest people on earth!..Kenny really liked to polka at weddings and always had a good time......what nice folks..

Hi, I went to see our son and family in Woodland Ca.(near Sacramento) and found a "Moving" picture of the Falls. At the time, I didn't know it was our Falls.I found Pasty.com and realized the picture was Tahquamenon Falls. Its a beautiful picture taken in Autumn. I also has sounds of rushing water and birds. Just love it.

By EM,MI on Monday, January 26, 2004 - 10:11 pm:

The hardware with the faucet was Hermans before Jurmos.
