Roger Kangas sure keeps us Pasty Cam viewers guessing. I'll have to ask the boss about starting a new feature: Where in the Keweenaw is Roger's photo taken today? :->

Wherever this shot was taken, it sure is a peaceful looking scene, a bit chilly looking with that snow in the air, but peaceful just the same. Went cross country skiing this weekend in the woods. Mounds of snow piled up on the trees, beautiful, until... the wind whipped up... then, some of the beauty was taken away by the snow falling down my neck!! It was at that point that I wasn't sorry I had forgotten my camera any more. Ah, winter in the North... can't beat it!

By UP_gal on Wednesday, January 21, 2004 - 06:17 am:

Good Morning to all. Yes , it seems the glaciers have returned. I like to think there is no such thing as too-cold weather.....just inadequate clothing. Wonderful to be out there, isn't it?

By John S. formally of Laurium on Wednesday, January 21, 2004 - 07:07 am:

Good Morning from Livonia, MI. I'm at work today, but I wish I was up in the Copper Country, where I was born and raised.
Nice photo Roger. It looks like the photo was taken in your "neck of the woods".
I believe the photo is facing east toward Torch Lake from Hungarian Falls. I've seen that view many times with my parents.
Thanks for taking me back to a childhood memory.

By Mike B., Pittsburgh, Wishin I was back in the Yoop on Wednesday, January 21, 2004 - 07:12 am:

Great point, UP_gal. I tell people that all the time.

It's not too cold outside, you just don't have enough clothes on.

I can just imagine how peaceful the woods are up there now. Snow all around, the cold biting at your face and ears. Take a deep breath and it seems to cleanse your whole being.

Absolutely Wonderful!

By Taka on Wednesday, January 21, 2004 - 07:37 am:

Was this taken by Hungarian Falls?

By Jim Grill,Calumet, MI on Wednesday, January 21, 2004 - 07:45 am:

Good Morning. Coming into Eagle River from the west on Sunset Bay Road? Have a great day. Jim Grill, Calumet

By Bob-B Hubbell/Madtown on Wednesday, January 21, 2004 - 09:04 am:

John S.,it looks like the photo is alittle SW of the Hungarian, maybe the Pines crick (that's creek to U's guys)west of the Tamarack hill.

By Drew, MN on Wednesday, January 21, 2004 - 09:53 am:

Taka is right me thinks, I have several pictures myself from this angle near Hungarian Falls.

By Soldier in Iraq on Wednesday, January 21, 2004 - 10:00 am:

To be honest, I think it's at the top of Brockway Mountain. Unless this computer is messed up, i can see Lake Superior ahead. Have a great day everybody!!!

By Jeff K on Wednesday, January 21, 2004 - 10:22 am:

Yes, I have the same picture taken in the summer... It is near the edge of Hungarian Falls overlooking Torch Lake/Lake Linden/Hubbel .... We hiked up to the falls from a friends house on the outskirts of Hubbel. In fact, we hiked in from his sisters house. His name was Kevin ______ and he was killed in an ATV accident up there a few years back. Anyone remember his last name? Nice guy, physics teacher at ______ ... What a shame.

By Mary Drew at Pasty Central on Wednesday, January 21, 2004 - 10:26 am:

Jeff K.
That would have been Kevin Anderson. And you're correct...nice guy and a terrific teacher at LLHHS...he's remembered and missed by many.

By Leslie, Illinois on Wednesday, January 21, 2004 - 10:30 am:

What a beautiful scene. Cold where I'm at too, nothing like up there I s'pose, but severe lack of snow here. Cold without snow just don't seem right. Thanks for the view to a world more sane ...

By Kate, CA on Wednesday, January 21, 2004 - 10:40 am:

To Soldier in Iraq: Thanks for being there for us. The desert is a far cry from Copper Country. Wish you were here. Hopefully you will be soon. Prayers for your safety.

By julie, MD on Wednesday, January 21, 2004 - 10:53 am:

ditto to the soldier in Iraq, stay safe buddy.

By wanda, Calumet MI on Wednesday, January 21, 2004 - 10:57 am:

looks like Lac La Belle to me....

By concerned in WA on Wednesday, January 21, 2004 - 11:11 am:

Soldier in Iraq, we were missing hearing from you. Glad
you checked in, as we were wondering how you have
been.Take good care of yourself. You and all the others
serving our country over there have a place in our
hearts.

By Kurt , Brighton, MI on Wednesday, January 21, 2004 - 11:49 am:

I would have to agree with John, that is looking east towards Torch Lake from Hungarian Falls. Nice photo's Roger. I enjoy seeing the Keweenaw from your lens

By Steve on Wednesday, January 21, 2004 - 11:50 am:

I agree with Wanda - it looks as if the photographer was shooting Lac La Belle, perhaps from the SE side of Mt. Bohemia.

By Louan- Elk Rapids,MI on Wednesday, January 21, 2004 - 12:28 pm:

I never can guess the locations of these pictures. I just enjoy looking at them. I also enjoy that UP humor.
We are having a UP winter, down below, this year.Lots of snow and coooooold. I'll remember that tip about more clothes.
I work in a factory that builds black silk underwear for the troops in the desert. It keeps them cool when it's hot and warm when it's not. I think about all of our young men and women every day and pray for their safe return. Thanks guys and gals.

By MJ-L,MI on Wednesday, January 21, 2004 - 12:33 pm:

Hey Mary and Rich!

I was walking on the beach down by Armour's place last summer. I saw his boat sitting in dry dock. Sure brought back alot of wonderful memories of summers spent at Sedar Bay.There are so many homes and cottages near his place now. What a good man he was!

By wanda, Calumet MI on Wednesday, January 21, 2004 - 12:40 pm:

When do we learn where the photo was taken? I'm new to this.

By BT, TC on Wednesday, January 21, 2004 - 01:09 pm:

It IS from Hungarian falls....my grandparents old farm could normally be seen across the way in Bootjack....but it is a little snowy there in this pic...as it is extremely snowy out my office window right now in Traverse City. Anticipating the use of the scoop tonite...uggg!

By Roger Kangas on Wednesday, January 21, 2004 - 01:12 pm:

Good question Wanda! I guess it's up to me to give the answer. However, it's interesting to see all the different guesses, and I would hate to leave someone out of the game by answering too early. There are more than a few people that have stood in the same exact spot as I did and captured the beauty on film/disk. There are also many more that have just took in the view. Incidentally, John S. appears to be the first one to guess the location of this picture, in his posting early this morning.

By CK in Chassell on Wednesday, January 21, 2004 - 01:19 pm:

Hmm. Looks peaceful. I can almost hear the incessant buzzing of sleds careening out of control. Over the river and through the woods, higgledy-piggledy they go. Oops, CRASH, too fast. Safety first!

By Jeff Moore on Wednesday, January 21, 2004 - 01:34 pm:

What are some of the names and populations of some of the larger towns in and around the keweenaw peninsula? I am interested in moving U.P. there!

By wanda, Calumet MI on Wednesday, January 21, 2004 - 01:41 pm:

Thanks Roger. The view from my window isn't too pretty today. The "North Country Bank" sign and US 41 look like a blizzard is hitting. Wish I were in Jamaica! Or even Chassell!!!

By Fran, FL on Wednesday, January 21, 2004 - 02:28 pm:

Wanda, How about this "clear blue sunny sky, 65 degrees, wind off the Alantic 6mph" I'd still rather be in Houghton!

By Rachel, Illinois on Wednesday, January 21, 2004 - 03:08 pm:

From Rachel, Illinois

The UP is so beautiful, so calm and relaxing. We want to retire there. What's it like to live there all year?

To the soldier from Iraq: we're thinking about and praying for all of you. Bless you for serving our country. Do you miss a nice, hot pasty with gravy?

By L-L-Love my old Yoop on Wednesday, January 21, 2004 - 03:37 pm:

Brrrrr.... B-B-Beautiful!! B-B-But then that's the UP! Beautiful year round.

AND it is how you dress and not what the temp is.

By UP_gal on Wednesday, January 21, 2004 - 04:02 pm:

To Rachel in Illinois:
The UP is a wonderful, beautiful & unique place. No-one who has ever lived here or even visted will tell you otherwise. As you can tell by this forum...we residents and former residents love this place with ever fibre of our being. Many make the wise decision to return "up home" after many years of working in distant cities. Perhaps it is *Mayberry* thinking...and not for everyone. Surely you must be winter-hardy. But the communtiies are small, friendly, family orineted. With strong ties to commuity and churches. Frankly, this is the best of America.
And that is MY soapbox speech !

By Bonnie in MN on Wednesday, January 21, 2004 - 04:21 pm:

Thanks for the pictures daily. My husband is up in your area this week snowmobiling, no show here. It was fun to track him across the U.P.

(That should have been sNow :) )

By John S. Laurium/Howell on Wednesday, January 21, 2004 - 04:38 pm:

Thanks, Roger, for the nice photo today, but I was looking back on some of your old photos, and I think the one where the boys are playing hockey on Portage Lake, in front of "the yellow camp", is the best - that is one sweet photo.
I wouldn't mind being in Bootjack right now - instead I gotta go fight the traffic from Livonia to Howell.
Have a good one. Thanks for the entertainment for the day.

By Laura Kangas on Wednesday, January 21, 2004 - 05:11 pm:

John S.
The Portage Lake hockey pic in Roger's album, is not in front of Camp Otto, but across the lake in Chassell. The lake had some excellent skating early in the season. Pasty Central is a great way to get a daily dose of the U.P. :)

By rt MI on Wednesday, January 21, 2004 - 06:19 pm:

Yes I agree Torch lake from the falls. I have photo, black & white from spring of 1958 from same location, except then there a smoke stack and buildings on the edge of lake in photo.

By Charlie at Pasty Central on Wednesday, January 21, 2004 - 07:05 pm:

The Pasty Cam featured this view of Hungarian Falls in quite a different season about a year and a half ago, one of Kelly Wenberg's pictures:

Spring time
Join that discussion here. By the way, we made room for the parallel discussion of a partisan nature on its own page. Did I hear someone say Toivo was running for President?

yooper in Iraq: So glad to hear from you once more. Prayers are with you and all of our military over there. God Bless

By Susan B. Anthony on Wednesday, January 21, 2004 - 08:16 pm:

CK in Chassell: Think of those "noisy" snowmobiles as "money in the U.P. piggy bank!" Some of the local businesses look forward to this income!

By Bob,il on Wednesday, January 21, 2004 - 09:46 pm:

To the caretaker of the cam pointing to the lift bridge thank you for the return of the night shots its awesome to see the superior snow guns going in full gear thru the lights on the giant bridge

By Fran,Ga on Wednesday, January 21, 2004 - 09:52 pm:

Glad you are safe Yooper in Iraq!!! Thanks to you and the other servicemen and women.,

The photo is beautiful,Roger!Love seeing that snow.

Rachel,Up Gal is right! You may leave the UP but it never leaves you. I have been gone along time but Just looking at the Pasty Cam Pictures I can feel just what it is like to walk thru a snowy woods and the sense of extreme quietness where you can hear the snow falling. Yooper people special as you can pretty much tell by this site.It is more like family. I hope you get a chance to live there sometime.

By wanna know, MI on Wednesday, January 21, 2004 - 09:53 pm:

Just what are those snow guns under the bridge, Bob in
Il? Just checked the bridge cam and I see the bursts of
snow- what the hey???

By EM, MI on Wednesday, January 21, 2004 - 10:12 pm:

Snow Guns????? Isn't this just the snowfall being reflected in the lights under the bridge?

By EM, MI on Wednesday, January 21, 2004 - 10:26 pm:

A little late Fran in Ga, but thanks for your recipe. Haven't tried it yet but intend to.

By Victor Parisian on Wednesday, January 21, 2004 - 11:08 pm:

Good night from Houston!
What a picture. I'm keeping this one as my desk top. Some of that cool air finally made it down our way. It sure is nice. Still have a few tomatoes on the vines. They may make it til spring if we can duck another frost.

By The Z-Man on Wednesday, January 21, 2004 - 11:14 pm:

"Toivo for President"..........Toivo,s got my vote. I hear if elected he's going to make the U.P. the 51st state?

By Ken and Mimi from da UP on Wednesday, January 21, 2004 - 11:19 pm:

I remember seeing the view from here many times when I lived in Tamarack. Torch Lake sure looks a lot nicer blue than the muddy red it used to be. The view of the falls from the center of the railroad bridge span in the spring was just beautimous. Da UP, what a place! We love it!

By CK in Chassell on Thursday, January 22, 2004 - 12:46 am:

Susan B, yep, those sledders bring income to the area, and I'm all for it. More importantly, however, we have some great wilderness areas up here, and I like to see them enjoyed by all, including the "buzzing" sleds. I was just pokin' some fun at the sleds, because I don't have one and would probably enjoy the heck out of it.

Welcome, snowmobilers, and please be safe! I get distressed by the daily accident reports in the Daily Mining Gazette.

By Mary Lou on Thursday, January 22, 2004 - 01:42 am:

PRESIDENT TOIVO......finally some SISU in the White House!!....his new slogan "I promise a pasty in every pot"...(I mean plate) and his theme song could be the "The Blue Skirt Waltz"..just the way they sing and sway at MTU...

By FRNash/PHX, AZ on Thursday, January 22, 2004 - 12:59 pm:

Re President Toivo:
"I hear if elected he's going to make the U.P. the 51st state?"

Hmmm, mebby we can resurrect that notion (was it in the 50's or 60's?) of the great state of "Superior"!

By Ron, Michigan on Thursday, January 22, 2004 - 03:42 pm:

Hey Toivo, when you get elected are we going to start calling troll land the "Chopper" instead of the "Mitten"?

By walter p tampa on Thursday, January 22, 2004 - 08:48 pm:

upper in iraq keep your head down

By Frank, St. Charles IL on Friday, January 23, 2004 - 11:05 am:

Maybe Toivo will appoint Charlie and Jonathan as Co-Directors of Telecommunications and Pasties! They'll have wireless 'net access throughout the nation faster'n you can say "Wi-Fi"! J
