Temps in the Keweenaw have been pretty cold, thus reducing my woodpile at a quicker pace. Maybe that's what caught my eye in this photo by Roger Kangas. That big old leaning tree. Are you thinking what I'm thinking - - that would help replenish my diminishing fuel supply. I have no idea what waterfall this is, so I guess we have another mystery falls here. That water must be rushing at a pretty good clip, look at all the foam forming at the base of the falls - - nice job Roger!

By Jeff K, Gaylord on Saturday, January 17, 2004 - 08:28 am:

Hungarian? Just a guess.
But looks nice !

By john, wixom on Saturday, January 17, 2004 - 08:39 am:

Know what you mean about the diminishing woodpile Toivo. Cold here down below too. I have decided to make the run to the woodpile part of my New Year's exercise routine as I am constantly running back and forth between the pile and the firebox. Beats a treadmill!

By Roy TN on Saturday, January 17, 2004 - 08:45 am:

Looks like Jacob's Creek falls to me.

By Yooper in Indiana on Saturday, January 17, 2004 - 08:51 am:

think that roy is right!

By Sharyn on Saturday, January 17, 2004 - 08:57 am:

Great photo!

By Kate, St Paul on Saturday, January 17, 2004 - 09:13 am:

I'd vote for Jacob's Creek. Crawled up that creek on
geology field camp years ago. Oh so pretty.

By Dave of Mohawk on Saturday, January 17, 2004 - 10:38 am:

I'll vote for Jacobs Creek Falls near the Jampot.

By Connie, Ft. Belvoir VA on Saturday, January 17, 2004 - 11:28 am:

BRRRRR! Sure is beautiful though!

By Downstate Dave on Saturday, January 17, 2004 - 11:32 am:

Yup, gotta be Jacobs Falls. Compare this picture to a summertime shot in the "Guest Gallery" on Page 7 in the "Heavenly Spots" Albumn.

By Nancy, East Lansing on Saturday, January 17, 2004 - 11:34 am:

It's cold and snowing here in East Lansing this morning. It's nice that we are finally getting some snow down here. I'd still rather be up in the UP tho! Great photo!

By Downstate Dave on Saturday, January 17, 2004 - 11:34 am:

Great shot Roger!

By Leslie at the Northern Lights Lodge - Cadillac on Saturday, January 17, 2004 - 12:04 pm:

Cold and snow here in Cadillac too! I love the photo of the falls, very picturesque... I'll vote for Jacobs falls...

By hugh beattie, congress, az on Saturday, January 17, 2004 - 12:38 pm:

great pic! we could surely use some of that snow and
cold right now here in arizona!

By Roger Kangas on Saturday, January 17, 2004 - 01:02 pm:

Thanks for all the nice comments on the photo. However, this isn't Jacob's falls. Here's a hint. The river crosses Five Mile Point road. I'll report back later with the name of the river.

By Dave of Mohawk on Saturday, January 17, 2004 - 01:47 pm:

Gratiot River!

By DB-LL on Saturday, January 17, 2004 - 02:21 pm:

I have been on the Gratiot many times--never seen any terain or falls like this. Sure looks like jacobs falls to me also!!

By JJ MI on Saturday, January 17, 2004 - 02:29 pm:

Hugh of Congress AZ

at the base of yarnell "hill" (on top of which is the town of yarnell - a mile high city -

Hugh, the last time through the area (I rode a bicycle from peoria to prescott - late 70's) I noticed an old studabaker, complete with the black widow spiders sitting out front of a restaurant there - still there??? (the studabaker)

As I recall there was a "bar" in yarnell that could have been in the U.P. any day - as it was kinda set up like someone's living room, couches chairs, and the steps outthe back door ran up into the owner's house... Very comfortable...

By Deb, still a Yooper in the LP on Saturday, January 17, 2004 - 02:54 pm:

Brrrr.... just happened to look at the bridge cam and the Copper Harbor cam. It's snowy here today, but not quite like that.

By Cindy, St. Clair Shores, MI on Saturday, January 17, 2004 - 03:05 pm:

The U.P. sure is a winter wonderland! What a nice shot. Thanks, Roger.

By Clyde Elmblad...L'Anse, MI on Saturday, January 17, 2004 - 03:15 pm:

I gotta guess this is Silver Creek Falls on Silver Creek...Sure is a Beautiful Photo!

By Kate, CA on Saturday, January 17, 2004 - 03:24 pm:

Thank you for displaying such a beautiful photo. Can just about feel and smell the cool, crisp air and hear the falls rushing over the hill. Wonderful!I'm coming to my beloved U.P. in June and hope to visit many of the favorite places shown by our pasty cammers....Keep 'em coming!

By Jean So. Cal on Saturday, January 17, 2004 - 03:30 pm:

I vote for Silver Creek

By Fred & Peggy, Auburn, In. on Saturday, January 17, 2004 - 03:55 pm:

Great winter picture. Our vote goes for Jacobs Falls just up the road from Gitche Gumee Bible Camp in Eagle River.

By Al So.Cal on Saturday, January 17, 2004 - 04:06 pm:

Gratiot River west of 5 Mile Pt. Rd. ?

By Fred on Saturday, January 17, 2004 - 04:42 pm:

I think Clyde got it right, again, looks like Silver Creek. Great pic Roger.

By JimBuckel'50, Florida on Saturday, January 17, 2004 - 05:13 pm:

Great photo, Roger. But I have to say I feel truly sorry for all you miserable folks gutting out the winter in Mich., Ohio, Ill., etc. I figure the smartest thing I did (after marrying my wife) was to retire to West Palm Beach, Florida! I'm sitting here enjoying the view of Lake Worth, Singer Is., and the Atlantic in the background. It's a cool 75 degrees! But regretably, no waterfalls.

By Steve Racine Wi.calumet on Saturday, January 17, 2004 - 06:05 pm:

i was thinking jacobs at first, except for the step, gotta be silver

By Alex Tiensivu, Cozy in Hot Georgia on Saturday, January 17, 2004 - 07:27 pm:

It might be New York! -40 Below with NO Wind Chill? Ooooooo! :)

By Eric, OH on Saturday, January 17, 2004 - 07:34 pm:

If it crosses 5 mile pt. road, it must be Gratiot. I've tried to find those falls a couple of times, but have only walked up and down the stream in pleasant, but unspectacular riffles.

By Roger Kangas on Saturday, January 17, 2004 - 07:46 pm:

To those who guessed the Silver River, you are correct. It's a short (although a bit treacherous) hike upstream from the road to get to the falls.

By DB- LL on Saturday, January 17, 2004 - 09:05 pm:

please show map ofthis falls location or describe where in relation to road etc. ---thanks

By Fran,Ga on Saturday, January 17, 2004 - 10:25 pm:

This picture would be a good Calendar picture.I like all the details in it. The relecton in the water is nice. Great Photo.

By Mich. Nomad on Sunday, January 18, 2004 - 03:38 am:

Don't you mean Silver Creek. Silver River is the one due west of where Brockway MT. road forks off of M26. There are two smaller falls just up river from Silver Creek Falls. They are a pain to get to but their splendor is worth it.

By Toivo from Toivola on Sunday, January 18, 2004 - 06:47 am:

Well said, Mich. Nomad. I think Roger meant Silver Creek. DeLorme shows the River just before you turn up Brockway, while the Creek is on the way toward Sand Hills Lighthouse:

Silver River
Silver Creek

By Roger Kangas on Sunday, January 18, 2004 - 01:02 pm:

I stand corrected! As pointed out by Mich Nomad and Toivo, it is the Silver "Creek" not "River". A slip of the keyboard. :)

By Tige on Saturday, February 14, 2004 - 01:47 pm:

Awesome picture! Caution - scenes like this cause rapid cases of instant home-sickness.

By Bryan Wells - Redford, MI on Thursday, March 11, 2004 - 04:23 pm:

This is a beautiful little waterfalls. I've been there in the summer 2 years ago while visiting my grandparents old house in Eagle River.

Great picture, Roger! According to my "Michigan Waterfalls" book, these are called "Unnamed Falls" . Quite original I'd say.
