Meet Megan Elmblad, showing the never-ending battle we wage with the snow here in the North Country. Megan has appeared on the Pasty Cam pages before, but not in person. Her Dad, Clyde is one of our 120+ Guest Gallery contributors. As a matter of fact, he's also the first one to have guessed correctly, where Monday's mystery falls were located. Clyde confided, that he's going to be in trouble for posting this shot, even though Megan reluctantly agreed to appearing. So, if you hear a ruckus somewhere in L'Anse today, you'll have a good idea what it's all about!!

By julie b., MI on Thursday, January 8, 2004 - 06:42 am:

Most people who live in the north have been in Megan's boots at one time or another, so she shouldn't feel bad at all!

By UP_Mom on Thursday, January 8, 2004 - 06:50 am:

Where's you hat, Meagan? You can lose 80% of your body heat through your head, ya know! Looks like the car started so she won half the shoveling battle.

By John / New Hampshire on Thursday, January 8, 2004 - 08:31 am:

A quick question from chilly (-8) Temple, NH - are Clyde and Megan related to Les Elmblad of Skanee?

By Pete Wi on Thursday, January 8, 2004 - 09:15 am:

I'll take that anyday instead of the brown grass around here. The only frozen precipitation on the ground here is ice.

By Dutch Fred, Central Europe on Thursday, January 8, 2004 - 09:43 am:

I agree with Pete. Here it is raining raining raining with a gray gray gray sky. I long for a real winter! We had some snow last Sunday - okay - I left my house early and was on duty in time. So where is the problem?

By TS westcentralohio on Thursday, January 8, 2004 - 09:45 am:

I know that look all too well. That is the look of someone who sees that friendly snowplow driver coming down the road to plow in the end of the driveway ever deeper and Megan wondering if she really needs to go out after all. Hang in there, cause it'll only get deeper.

By Chris GB on Thursday, January 8, 2004 - 10:02 am:

I think Megan and I should swap vehicles. I haven't really needed my 4x4 with 31" tires this year down in GB. I think my yard is actually the frozen tundra!!! LOL GO PACKERS!!!

By Sue, Calumet on Thursday, January 8, 2004 - 10:43 am:

Megan needs a hat AND a Yooper Scooper.

By Joe Finn, Rhinelander, Wi on Thursday, January 8, 2004 - 10:50 am:

The hat should be a traditional Kromer, now made in the U.P. in Ironwood.

By Jean, West Texas. on Thursday, January 8, 2004 - 10:52 am:

Hey, send some of that precip to
West Texas....we have had no measurable precip for 60 days:( Today will be near 60 after some days of brutal cold. And of course, the sun is out. I miss the snow.......... I would like to send my greetings to Pete of Wi., he's my dad:)

By Clyde Elmblad...L'Anse, MI on Thursday, January 8, 2004 - 10:53 am:

I better start working on my obituary cuz, DA KID IS GONNA KILL ME...LOL!!!

In answer to your question John, Les Elmblad is a cousin and a close friend.

By CK in Chassell on Thursday, January 8, 2004 - 11:20 am:

Yes, TS, that is the resigned look of someone who sees the snow plow coming, just as she's almost finished shoveling out the driveway. The postman may ring twice, but the plow always goes by thrice.

Regarding snow frustrations, my parents heard on their police scanner (er, shortwave radio) yesterday that somewhere up here in Houghton County, a guy was standing in the middle of his road with a baseball bat so the snow plow driver couldn't go by. Perhaps he had just shoveled out the bottom of his driveway, too! Now that's SISU!

By Roz, GR MI on Thursday, January 8, 2004 - 11:50 am:

I thought the look was one of "And you're not picking up a shovel to help me WHY??!!" :)

By ric, wi on Thursday, January 8, 2004 - 11:56 am:

Hmmm...

If she was ta pank da snow down it would be ok, hey...

By Yooper gal goes south on Thursday, January 8, 2004 - 01:09 pm:

Hey Jean in Texas! Whats the weather in Texas like in February? I will be in Dallas the 3rd thru the 9th. I appreciate the info.

By Troll in E.H. on Thursday, January 8, 2004 - 01:14 pm:

Sure it would work to pank down the snow....until the next good thaw came. Then she'd need the above offered 4x4 to get herself out.

By Clyde Elmblad...L'Anse, MI on Thursday, January 8, 2004 - 01:32 pm:

"Story Behind The Photo"
Megan was retuning home from school on this particular heavy snow day. 15 minutes before she got home, the infamous village snowplow did it's duty by clearing the road and throwing a big pile of snow onto the driveway. As we all know, small cars do not make good snowplows. Anyway, when Megan turned into the driveway she got stuck with the front half of her car in the driveway and the rear half dangling in the road. Of course I couldn't resist getting the camera out for a picture. I asked her what she was thinking and why she had that disgusted look in the picture. She replied, "I not only had to shovel the deep snow around my car, I still had 50 feet to shovel to the garage!"

By Missin the UP from NJ on Thursday, January 8, 2004 - 02:23 pm:

Whoa! Megan, pace yourself! 50 ft. of driveway is a lot of work!
We still haven't gotten snow that sticks this year. An earlier storm melted away, and now it's blasted cold and still no snow. The whole family has snowshoes now so maybe we'll try "panking" the snow down, if we ever get some, LOL!!

By Gordo in Grand Rapids on Thursday, January 8, 2004 - 02:37 pm:

Hey why not buy a snow thrower? Mine works great and sure makes things a lot easier on the back! Won't change when the snow plow shows up though. They always seem to plow just before I'm ready to leave for some place important. How do they know?

By ED on Thursday, January 8, 2004 - 02:55 pm:

The word PANK is just a Yooper used expression. "The traditional Upper Peninsula pasty was brought over by speakers (and cooks) from Cornwall, England, who also most likely gave the area the words bush, meaning forest or woods, and pank, meaning to pack or make compact, as in "pank snow," "pank berries in a bucket," or "pank powder into a blasting hole in mine rock."

By Dave - Colorado on Thursday, January 8, 2004 - 03:57 pm:

That poor girl needs a yooper scooper! You can move a lot of snow fast!!

By Mike-Transplanted Yooper-Redford, Mi on Thursday, January 8, 2004 - 04:15 pm:

Megan looks upset 'cause someone musta played the Heikki Lunta Snow Dance song.

By Nancy Mi on Thursday, January 8, 2004 - 04:36 pm:

Nancy BURTCHVILLE, I can still see the snow I moved in LL before work. The good old days. LOL I'm from beautiful downtown Jacobsville. Love the pictures.

By walter p tampa on Thursday, January 8, 2004 - 04:53 pm:

love that beautiful snow brings fond memories

By Debbie, Illinois on Thursday, January 8, 2004 - 05:15 pm:

Hey Ed,
I sure like your descriptions of the Yooper expressions. Where did the word 'camp' come from as in cottage, vacation home, etc?

When visiting my Lepisto relatives many years ago, my aunt used to say...we'll make wood and take sauna, heh?

By You know me! on Thursday, January 8, 2004 - 05:24 pm:

SISU to the Packers. GO PACK GP!!!!

By You know me! on Thursday, January 8, 2004 - 05:27 pm:

GOOOOO!!!!!!!

By Deb, Lower Michigan on Thursday, January 8, 2004 - 05:32 pm:

Debbie from Illinois, your comment about using 'camp' for cottage or vacation home makes me chuckle. I grew up in the Copper Country and knew many people with 'camps'. Now that I live in the Lower Peninsula, I have to make sure I say 'cottage', as I have offended a few people here by inadvertently calling their vacation homes 'camp'. : ) As my husband says, you can take the girl out of the U.P., but you can't take the U.P. out of the girl.

By The Dam Guy, Parasite Creek on Thursday, January 8, 2004 - 06:10 pm:

I'm guessing she's ticked off, not because of the snow, but because of the prospect of Kennecott's proposed sulfide mining in the Yellow Dog plains. I could be wrong, however. For more information, check out www.ydeaglealliance.com... I hate to see perfectly good wilderness succumb to AMD (acid mine drain). And what an excellent watershed it is, too. Support your local civil disobedience group, and learn something in the process. I apologize for this eco-blurb, but if you and I don't care, who will?

By Andy on Thursday, January 8, 2004 - 06:11 pm:

Maybe she is upset because she got "stuck" with a Dodge Neon instead of a Camaro or Mustang?

By h p omallly up on Thursday, January 8, 2004 - 06:25 pm:

sisu to packers boooo boooo and boooo

By J, chassell on Thursday, January 8, 2004 - 07:21 pm:

The camp is the camp, not the cottage. Always has been the camp and always will be the camp. Can hardly wait to get there again this summer!!!! Yes, I am a yooper! Right sister LE in Montague?

By Paul in Illinois on Thursday, January 8, 2004 - 07:29 pm:

Uh huh! Maybe she is ticked off about rising trade deficits and jobs going off shore and across the borders by the hundreds of thousands. Why go to school and fight snow if your homeland isn't offering at least the same prospects your parents had? But maybe it is just the snow.
Moderation! Study both sides. Just as it is foolish to poison ourselves, it is also foolish to starve ourselves or let ourselves get into a position where our enemies can.
During the past several years there have also been notes against the Nature Conservancy buying up land to preserve the wilderness!
Nothing in this world is as black and white as the extreme minorities would like to have it. In the end, the grey majority makes the final decision.
We hammer on industry vs. environment etc. often enough - let's not project our views on a picture of a girl with a snow shovel.
"Camps" seems to have come from the old days, the rich had summer homes, the not so rich literally "camped" in tents when they escaped urban Red Jacket for a few days in the woods. Later, when we became more affluent and could buy or lease land and build cottages, the "camp" name stuck.

By pj in the U.P. on Thursday, January 8, 2004 - 07:54 pm:

Megan, a girl who can handle U.P. snow can handle anything!! You go, girl!

By Trish, WA on Thursday, January 8, 2004 - 08:38 pm:

Somewhere on the lake near Chassell, we crossed
railroad tracks and there it was, an empty lot we called
our Grandpa's Camp. So, I always thought a camp was
simply a cabin-less spot one could retreat to, to take a
dip, roast a few marshmallows, swat the mosquitoes
once the sun went down, then pile in the car and head
back to Houghton.
Hi there, Kathie, Uncle Phil, and cousin Clyde Elmblad!
(we share the same great-great grandparents, Daniel
and Kajsa Newman (Nyland), who settled in Skanee).

By Clyde Elmblad...L'Anse, MI on Thursday, January 8, 2004 - 10:07 pm:

Hiya Cuz!
I don't know if you've ever seen pictures of our Great-Great Grandparents Trish but on my personal homepage I have some very old family pictures you may be interested to check-out. Just click on the link below...

By ILMHitCC on Thursday, January 8, 2004 - 10:13 pm:

I know that look, too. It's when you shovel half way up the drive way and then turn to look at how far you've gotten. Thing is, you can't even tell where you shoveled already 'cuz the snow is coming down as fast as you can shovel it out!

By Dave of Mohawk on Thursday, January 8, 2004 - 11:50 pm:

Right on Paul in Illinois.

By Kim, Iowa on Friday, January 9, 2004 - 08:40 am:

All I gotta say is "Dad, GET THAT GIRL A SNOW BLOWER!"

By Debi, Laurium on Saturday, January 10, 2004 - 10:18 am:

To CK in Chassell: My husband heard the same thing about the guy with the baseball bat. Said it was quite comical. After digging out day after day after day, maybe he was getting Spring fever and wanted to play baseball! People tend to lose their sense of humor this time of year.

By Brother Dave/WI on Wednesday, January 14, 2004 - 05:59 pm:

Hey Bro, Need to send Megan down to Kenosha and introduce her cousins to a snow shovel. Had a couple a snowstorms already and recieved no help from the offspring or da wifemate. Had a shovel 2 of my neighbors out also as they are down in Florida for da winter just like the Patriarch and the Matriarch.
