Meet Megan Elmblad, showing the never-ending battle we wage with the snow here in the North Country. Megan has appeared on the Pasty Cam pages before, but not in person. Her Dad, Clyde is one of our 120+ Guest Gallery contributors. As a matter of fact, he's also the first one to have guessed correctly, where Monday's mystery falls were located. Clyde confided, that he's going to be in trouble for posting this shot, even though Megan reluctantly agreed to appearing. So, if you hear a ruckus somewhere in L'Anse today, you'll have a good idea what it's all about!!

Most people who live in the north have been in Megan's boots at one time or another, so she shouldn't feel bad at all!

Where's you hat, Meagan? You can lose 80% of your body heat through your head, ya know! Looks like the car started so she won half the shoveling battle.

A quick question from chilly (-8) Temple, NH - are Clyde and Megan related to Les Elmblad of Skanee?

I agree with Pete. Here it is raining raining raining with a gray gray gray sky. I long for a real winter! We had some snow last Sunday - okay - I left my house early and was on duty in time. So where is the problem?

I know that look all too well. That is the look of someone who sees that friendly snowplow driver coming down the road to plow in the end of the driveway ever deeper and Megan wondering if she really needs to go out after all. Hang in there, cause it'll only get deeper.

I think Megan and I should swap vehicles. I haven't really needed my 4x4 with 31" tires this year down in GB. I think my yard is actually the frozen tundra!!! LOL GO PACKERS!!!

Yes, TS, that is the resigned look of someone who sees the snow plow coming, just as she's almost finished shoveling out the driveway. The postman may ring twice, but the plow always goes by thrice.

Regarding snow frustrations, my parents heard on their police scanner (er, shortwave radio) yesterday that somewhere up here in Houghton County, a guy was standing in the middle of his road with a baseball bat so the snow plow driver couldn't go by. Perhaps he had just shoveled out the bottom of his driveway, too! Now that's SISU!

I thought the look was one of "And you're not picking up a shovel to help me WHY??!!" :)

Megan was retuning home from school on this particular heavy snow day. 15 minutes before she got home, the infamous village snowplow did it's duty by clearing the road and throwing a big pile of snow onto the driveway. As we all know, small cars do not make good snowplows. Anyway, when Megan turned into the driveway she got stuck with the front half of her car in the driveway and the rear half dangling in the road. Of course I couldn't resist getting the camera out for a picture. I asked her what she was thinking and why she had that disgusted look in the picture. She replied, "I not only had to shovel the deep snow around my car, I still had 50 feet to shovel to the garage!"

Whoa! Megan, pace yourself! 50 ft. of driveway is a lot of work!
We still haven't gotten snow that sticks this year. An earlier storm melted away, and now it's blasted cold and still no snow. The whole family has snowshoes now so maybe we'll try "panking" the snow down, if we ever get some, LOL!!

Hey why not buy a snow thrower? Mine works great and sure makes things a lot easier on the back! Won't change when the snow plow shows up though. They always seem to plow just before I'm ready to leave for some place important. How do they know?

The word PANK is just a Yooper used expression. "The traditional Upper Peninsula pasty was brought over by speakers (and cooks) from Cornwall, England, who also most likely gave the area the words bush, meaning forest or woods, and pank, meaning to pack or make compact, as in "pank snow," "pank berries in a bucket," or "pank powder into a blasting hole in mine rock."

Debbie from Illinois, your comment about using 'camp' for cottage or vacation home makes me chuckle. I grew up in the Copper Country and knew many people with 'camps'. Now that I live in the Lower Peninsula, I have to make sure I say 'cottage', as I have offended a few people here by inadvertently calling their vacation homes 'camp'. : ) As my husband says, you can take the girl out of the U.P., but you can't take the U.P. out of the girl.

I'm guessing she's ticked off, not because of the snow, but because of the prospect of Kennecott's proposed sulfide mining in the Yellow Dog plains. I could be wrong, however. Uh huh! Maybe she is ticked off about rising trade deficits and jobs going off shore and across the borders by the hundreds of thousands. Why go to school and fight snow if your homeland isn't offering at least the same prospects your parents had? But maybe it is just the snow.

"Camps" seems to have come from the old days, the rich had summer homes, the not so rich literally "camped" in tents when they escaped urban Red Jacket for a few days in the woods. Later, when we became more affluent and could buy or lease land and build cottages, the "camp" name stuck.

simply a cabin-less spot one could retreat to, to take a

I know that look, too. It's when you shovel half way up the drive way and then turn to look at how far you've gotten. Thing is, you can't even tell where you shoveled already 'cuz the snow is coming down as fast as you can shovel it out!

Hey Bro, Need to send Megan down to Kenosha and introduce her cousins to a snow shovel. Had a couple a snowstorms already and recieved no help from the offspring or da wifemate. Had a shovel 2 of my neighbors out also as they are down in Florida for da winter just like the Patriarch and the Matriarch.
