Help needed on pronounciation -
Having studied Spanish in High School, and long aware of the French influence in the Great Lakes region, I thought it was funny to hear people from the Minneapolis/St. Paul area say Nick-O-lett, instead of Nick-O-lay, for the Nocolet Mall in Minneapolis.
So I don't embarass myself during a visit - how is Calumet said?
And, yes, I leared a long time ago how to pronounce Pasty - who says UPers don't have a sense of humor?

Help!! I am trapped between a corn field and a soybean feild somewhere in Iowa. That's Iowa, not Ohio. It's the state that is famous for Grant Wood. What is a "Grant Wood" you ask? He is the painter of the famous "American Gothic" painting. You know, the cover of the corn flakes box several years ago. The farmer couple, he holding the pich fork. At any rate, there are NO GREAT LAKES nearby!! No lovely, unpredictable Superior. No beautiful blue hue to the sky, just an average blue sky. Oh well, I have my Pasty.com and John Dee.com to keep me company.
I was up in Feburary, visiting my mother who is at Dube's in Hubbell. Ah, heaven.
I miss the U.P. I made the mistake (28 years ago) of falling in love with one of those Tech Toots!! However, to his credit, we have traveled the world. Someone asked me of all the places I have been to, where would I like to live. I didn't say London! No. I said Jacobsville!

Hello Jeanette and Brian, I remember the Aittima family from the farm at Bootjack. They were such a nice family!!!! Inga graduated in '49 with my husband Gary...she sent some old photos from grade school, which he really enjoyed!!....Gary's mom was Finnish and we had two generations of grandmas in the ktchen making pasties...one in Lake Linden and one in Nisula at the Hulkonen farm. I am French and German my beloved German Grandma Studer had a wonderful kitchen with pasties, saffron bread and homemade saurkraut..super meals came out of these kitchens which were full of love......Gary's mom at 92, is still making pasties to die for!!

Very Nice Jean, I love that pic...I was there that day. We have the bowl on display in our kitchen. Has a little crack in it so we only look at it now with fond memories of all the pasties,"pullas" and nisu that were mixed in that bowl on that table in that awesome kitchen. I miss those days sooooo much. And I wish you guys would have been there more often too...to share with us.

My aunt Inge Thomas in Traverse City often sends us e-mails to check out your Pasty.com site, and we really enjoy it! I live in Portland, Oregon and my parents, Bob & Gladys Beattie---who are tried and true born Yoopers ---live right next door to me and my husband! We have ordered pasties from your site, and thoroughly enjoy them---that's in-between the times that my mom isn't making them....! Anyway, here's a picture of my mom's mom, Hilda Aittama "Gramma Aitt", taken approximately in 1967, when she was 78 years old. This is at her farm in Bootjack/Lake Linden.

My mom (Gladys) is the oldest daughter in a family of twelve children. I grew up in Oregon, and got back to Michigan only a handful of times growing up, but have wonderful memories of those visits! Gramma Aitt actually came out to Oregon to visit us, when she was around 82 years old---she rode out in my aunt Inge & Uncle Ken's station wagon, along with my three cousins--who we were all expecting, and were so tickled when she popped up out of the back seat where she had hidden on the way up our driveway! She was a wonderful lady, and I'm sure there are many people who have great memories of her----I only wish I would have been able to spend more time with her! I keep in touch with my aunts in Michigan and one in Florida (my "Aunties Across America") on a daily e-mail basis, and it's really great to be able to stay close, even though the distance is far!

Anyone know what has happened to the link to The Daily Mining Gazette? I can't seem to get it to work for me. Not knowing where else to look for news on the Copper Kings. While we're at it, does anyone know of a site where you can get local (Keweenaw) news that CURRENT? Sure appreciate it!
