Julie Long has captured the brisk temperature, the snow crunching under snowshoes, and the peacefulness these two adventurers are feeling, looking out over the snowy rooftops of Houghton. Beauty in the U.P. can be found any place, any season, by anybody.....even the young ones!

By mike, from indiana on Wednesday, December 17, 2003 - 09:40 am:

Good to see a picture looking to the west. Most other pictures from that area are looking to the east. beautiful picture!

Southern UP Granny
I have to go through "Google" to get to Pasty Central. Today the "Google" motif has a design of the Wright Brothers plane of a century ago. What a tribute to the first 100 years of flying!

By R. Ollila MI on Wednesday, December 17, 2003 - 09:59 am:

What a sight. I have a similar shot from the Houghton side as the wallpaper for my computer. Longing to move back home.

By pegg,fla on Wednesday, December 17, 2003 - 10:21 am:

The brown house about an inch and a half to the right of the front tower was my great-great grandfather's. Thomas William Edwards, born July 5, 1838. He died in 1899, I can't remember the date. I have no idea who lives in it now, but they have done a wonderful job of restoring it. I'd love to see the inside someday.

By Phillip, Houston, TX on Wednesday, December 17, 2003 - 10:22 am:

Great photo - can't wait to get to the UP next week and finally see some snow. White Christmas, here I come!

By Janie, IA. on Wednesday, December 17, 2003 - 10:26 am:

Dear Mary: I must admit you have a real "nack" at this! I love the way you word to make captions for every picture! Great Job!!

By Mike B. Pittsburgh, Wishin I was back in the Yoop on Wednesday, December 17, 2003 - 10:29 am:

I can see my daughters house from this shot--hope to be up there in that house next week.

By PSmitSC on Wednesday, December 17, 2003 - 01:08 pm:

Peg fla-I believe the brown house was owned by Azar Kirkish in the 50s. My wife and I rented the top floor apartment in 54.

By Lanna, MTU, but leaving soon on Wednesday, December 17, 2003 - 01:39 pm:

That's a great picture, though you can't see Tech from it. I've noticed how everyone is coming up here next week, but I'm leaving to go home tomorrow. How odd. Anyway, thanks for the wonderful picture! I also wish I had my skis...

By Jeff Kalamazoo,Mi on Wednesday, December 17, 2003 - 06:15 pm:

Well since your going home lanna don't forget to bring your skies back. Can't wait to go sking myself either. To bad we only got 5 inches of snow at the best down here.

By Troll Family on Wednesday, December 17, 2003 - 08:31 pm:

To Mary Frank, Ill.

Our Aunt and Uncle have lived in the 200 block of W. Edwards for many years, so we bet your friend Betty knows them! Small world.

We have LOTS of UP cousins in the Houghton/Hancock area - young and old.

Pegg, my sister lived in your GGgrandfathers house when she first married. They rented the upstairs apartment also. I spent alot of time there when their son was born.

I'm glad everyone has enjoyed the picture of my sons as we snowshoed on the top of Quincy hill. Every day in the U.P. is a beautiful day!

My grandfather ran the BB bar , right over there and lived the next block up..behind where the Hardees is now

By Justme Wi. on Thursday, December 18, 2003 - 07:19 am:

You can't get eggs to takeout at the B&B anymore. That is sad.

By Ray B. , Ms. on Thursday, December 18, 2003 - 07:19 am:

No one has mentioned the "PowerHouse" ,where so many dances wirh a live band took place, after the football games!
The girls would dance in the middle and the boys would walk around in a big circle.

By Troll, MI on Thursday, December 18, 2003 - 08:09 am:

Ray B, Ms.
I remember going to the Powerhouse with my friend Mary Beth when we came up for visits from troll-land....I was a very young teen then..Wow, your comment brought back a lot of memories!! Thanks for the Christmas present.

Today would have been my dad's 78th birthday. Happy B-day Dad...

By Charlie at Pasty Central on Thursday, December 18, 2003 - 08:20 am:

We spent some time in the Powerhouse yesterday. It's the big green roofed building at the far end of the bridge in the shot above. It currently serves as one of the Smart Zone business incubators. Jonathan and I installed another Pasty.NET "Hot Spot" which serves wireless Internet. If you zoomed in to the horizon of the picture you would see up by the Mall, Festival Foods, etc., which is all blanketed by the Pasty.NET Hot Spot signal..

I wish I could just take off some time to write a book about the historic places and people we have met because of this wireless broadband project. So many neat old buildings, like the PowerHouse, Quincy Mine, St. Anne's church, Houghton County Airport, Calumet Theatre, Laurium Manor Inn, the radar base at Horace Greeley... so many attics, roofs and steeples, many which have seen up to 150 years of Copper Country History.

I appreciate Mary and Toivo taking over some of my day-to-day duties to allow time for these adventures, and I hope to relate more news about this exciting project in the days ahead.

By Kathie, SD on Thursday, December 18, 2003 - 04:58 pm:

Phil - Mike talks of that apartment that you and Irene lived in. I enjoy this website also.

By F carne, FL on Friday, December 19, 2003 - 01:22 am:

I spent many summers working at the Power Plant earning money for collage. I was a coal passer. No one dance there those days.

By Connie - Colorado on Friday, December 19, 2003 - 11:42 am:

I remember Betty Rompf. How cool to see her name!

By F. Carne, FL on Friday, December 19, 2003 - 02:29 pm:

Some one please call Betty Rompf and wish her a Merry Christmas for all of us who wish we could do it in person!!

By Jim Heikkinen, Kuwait for now on Saturday, December 20, 2003 - 08:33 am:

Here's a puzzler: Does anyone remember the TeePee Restaurant that used to be between Houghton and Chassel? My grandmother, Irene Myers, worked there "several" years ago.

By Sherry, Gulfport MS on Monday, December 22, 2003 - 02:17 am:

My husband and I always visit the B & B Bar when we come home in the summer, have to get some of those pickled eggs!! We used to get a dozen to go, but cannot do that anymore.

By Troll, MI on Monday, December 22, 2003 - 09:33 am:

Jim Heikkinen:
Yes, I remember the Tee-Pee. My dad use to work for Copper Country Dairy in the early 60's and use to deliver their products there. They had an Indian Chief that use to greet customers.

By Brian IN on Monday, December 29, 2003 - 01:15 am:
