Had an impromptu staff meeting with Charlie at Big Buck Night last weekend. He's swamped with pasty orders, wireless installations and Still Waters in general. So, for the rest of 2003, I'll be your Pasty Cam weekend edition host!

I found today's photo in Donn de Yampert's gallery. I sure hope Donn had his hattu and hansikas on when he was exploring near the Gravrot River (wherever that is). I'm curious as to how those icicles froze, pointing up in the air? Then some of them are hanging down like the usual ice formation. Must have been a cold windy day for that to happen. The poika in me wants to snap one of those icicles off and enjoy a winter treat!

Great picture Donn. The Graveraet River is between Freda and Misery Bay. The Freda cross-cut snowmobile trail is a ways off but goes by the Graveraet. Some beautiful scenery out that way.

Bridge shot is up!

I sure miss cold weather. The only place where I can see ice is in freezers ^^

Winter's icey grip begins to take hold. Pictures like this remind me why I love the 4 seasons in Michigan.

The wind blowing off the lake cause the icicles to grow upside down

In caves there are slagmites and slagtites the slagmites,go up. I know that but the spelling,I am not sure of?

By danbury; germany on Saturday, December 13, 2003 - 01:13 pm:

It's more like stalag- instead of slag-. But as language evolves, in a couple decades, you'll be right;)
Sure these grow upwards because of the wind? Just amazing.

The thing rolled over and further froze. Duh?

Help these guys if you can. I know this is off-topic, but here's a link to a Michigan HS football page that is missing some closed HS nicknames and school colors. Some of them are CC schools so maybe someone knows.http://michigan-football.com/teamcolr.htm

By Mike, MI on Saturday, December 13, 2003 - 03:11 pm:

The actual words are "stalactite" for the ones hanging from the ceiling, and "stalagmite" for the ones on the floor of a cave.

It looks like a yooper/veitnam style anti-personel device, but melts away.

By Steve Racine Wi.calumet on Saturday, December 13, 2003 - 08:11 pm:

Yooper in Iraq, Thank you for being there for the rest of us. You are thought of every day. Thanks again. God Bless America!!

People, just take a short break and think what OUR world would be like without guys like yooper in Iraq. It's guys like him that let us have the U.P. as we all love. Thank everybody in the armed services!! They're here for you.

If you are a civilian, hang a water filled black plastic bag in direct sunlight.
If you are in the military your options are better. FM 21-10 Field Sanitation used to have some diagrams for building shower heaters. It is an elevated 55 gal drum with 5 gal GI can of Diesel Fuel and pieces of pipe under it. Check with your medic or Btn Aid and Maintenance for parts.

By Therese Lansing Michigan on Saturday, December 13, 2003 - 10:21 pm:

God bless all serving in Iraq an we love you all an d very proud of you

By Ken and Mimi from da UP on Saturday, December 13, 2003 - 10:23 pm:

Going back to the stalactites and stalacmites, the saying was to think of 'ants in the pants', so you'd remember which was which. The 'mites' went up and the 'tites' came down. :>) Always thought that was cute. and "Thank you!" to the yooper in Iraq. You fellas and gals are in our prayers every day. GOD bless!

Who or what the heck was Graveraet? Isn't that also the name of the Marquette Middle School? Anyone?

By Lucy, TX on Sunday, December 14, 2003 - 12:23 am:

Hey, what happened to the bridge cam? It stopped at 1:44 this afternoon...must be pretty cold up there to freeze the camera in midday! :) Sure does look snowy, and makes me so homesick! Thank you for this wonderful site to visit everyday and dream!
