You just never know what you'll find when exploring in the Keweenaw. I've been walking past this tree daily for a couple years now, but never noticed the tree within a tree. Could be because the leaves had been covering the young sapling or maybe I've just been too deep in thought to look up....I'll have to make a note to pay more attention to my surroundings! It sure is kind of this big old gnarly maple to give a nurturing start to a tender little pine. She reminds me of a "Charlie Brown" tree, of course it's not one Snoopy could reach! Sure hope no one cuts it down for the holidays! I'm wondering what type of pine she is?

That was an experiment, K, to test a possible new feature on the Pasty Cam. Here at Pasty Central we stream the audio of Marquette's WHWL, which presents a U.P. wide weather and road report each morning. If we could automate a capture of the report, each day Cam Watchers could get up to speed with travel condition across Upper Michigan.

Could this be a maple tree in front of my back porch in Phoenix? If not, I have a friendly tree just like the one pictured.

A weather and road report feature would be great, especially when you have loved ones who have to travel a good distance to get home for the holidays or anytime during the winter. I have yet to find a good site for the U.p.road conditions during the winter months. Sure hope I can tune in to Pasty.com for that info soon.

Good morning from the icy Central Valley of California. It's frosty and 32 degrees here today. Reminds me of my windshield scraping days growing up in the Yoop. Our 'white stuff' is frost, instead of snow. Brrrr..Hey Mary, I think that tree is a vertical mapleyooperpine. Found only on unsuspecting, friendly, yoopermaplehost trees....(just funnin with ya) perhaps Mr. Wheatman might have the botanical name for it??? Have a great day there in the UP. In our neck of the woods (the Pacific NW), we call the
fallen trees that provide the nourishment for the
saplings 'nurse logs'. There are also scattered old-
growth cedar stumps complete with springboard
notches that do the job well.

This "gnarly old maple" isn't a stump or a fallen tree....she's alive and well. The crook where the little pine is growing is around 7 ft. from the ground!

Nature is an astounding thing!

That's no maple, looks like an elm tree to me, not many of them left after Dutch Elm disease.

Hi Mary in Ca. I live in Tracy. It's around Stockton, Modesto, Manteca area. It was downright cold this morning. And I agree that it sometimes feels colder here, than in the UP. Been out here in CA for 23 years now...the wind combined with the cold temps can definitely get a persons attention. My car was covered with heavy frost this am...but I didn't have any snow to shovel.

I love the weather report!! It's great to hear them say all my favorite towns with their local pronunciations!! Huh huh -- he said Hooton!! I clicked on the ! out of pure curiousity. I got this thing saying I needed to download the media player but when I aborted the download (don't have 38 mins.)it accepted the media player I had and started going! Mary, Candy and Kevin...good to know that there are other Yoopers around the area that I live in. I've often wondered how many transplanted Yoopers there are in the Sacramento/Valley/Bay area. A lot I'll bet...We would probably meet up if there was a pasty shop around here somewhere ey?? I'm 'thawed out' now from this am...but it'll be night soon, and chilly. Happy Thanksgiving to all.

To live up there you have to be hearty and resoursefull just like the beauty that surounds all that inhabit the wild suroundings of the untaimed wilderness of what is called the upper penusila of which I will always call home. Please excuse any spelling erors.

Hello fellow Yoopers. I'm one and live in San Jose. There are several Michigan transplants at our plant, some Yoopers and some Trolls. I'm from Hancock and have been here 23 years.
Our snow falls in Tahoe and that's the way we like it!

A most majestic specimen indeed is said maple, but in the spirit of the season not one for a diligent birds-eye view of the wary whitetail. Much too large to shinny up in a sturdy climber. All the same, kudos on the shot.

Pretty soon you'll be able to do a Pasty Calendar of UP trees growing in weird places. Remember the one on the smokestack? (http://www.pasty.com/discuss/messages/1779/1991.html) It's amazing the pine could get enough light to grow beneath the canopy of a large maple. We couldn't even get grass to grow under ours, let alone a tree!

Southern California here. It took living far away from the UP to truly appreciate it. Every time I go back I inhale as much as I can and when away I dream of pasties, fresh draft root beer, morning birds, rasberries, fire flies, northern lights, fall colors, thunderstorms and first snow. The pasty cam helps keep all these memories better preserved since I can see them daily. Thanks. Now if we can get more people to add web cams around the UP it'll really make the day bright when I turn on my PC.

A few years ago we had a mountain ash growing from our roof. Guess it was time to replace the roof, which we did. Trees'll grow anywhere to keep from getting buried in the snow.
