By
Mary Drew at Pasty Central on Friday, October 31, 2003 - 06:32 am:

A peaceful scene to view from Brian Thomas while we take time in our busy lives to remember and honor those that have gone on before us. Please also remember the Pilots and Flight Crews from 9/11. They are often forgotten when mentioning the casualties of that terrible day.

Theresa Judnich
Virginia Pietila
Sgt. Paul Johnson
James Carstens

A special note about Virginia Pietila. She was one of the pasty maker/tasters at Pasty Central for many years. She was also my Camp Fire Girl leader, way back when, and I for one will remember her smile and infectious laugh. She touched many.
Virginia

I'm glad you chose this photo...I've commented on it in Brian's gallery too. An outstanding shot.

Our thought and prayers go out to those who have lost loved ones.

By Dan in Fenton, MI on Friday, October 31, 2003 - 07:50 am:

Jim Carstens was a fun teacher in Michigan Tech's School of Technology. If it's the same guy I'm thinking of, he taught Analytic Geometry with Calculus, Manufacturing Processes, Drafting and some other courses.

By Carole - Mi. on Friday, October 31, 2003 - 08:06 am:

Lets not forget the people that perished in the California wild fires. Such unimaginable devastation that is destroying homes, businesses, forests and wildlife. Count our blessing that we also live in a beautiful state that is rich in many natural resources and pray we never see such destruction.

By Marsha, Genesee and Aura on Friday, October 31, 2003 - 08:18 am:

I thought that was my picture! It looks just like a picture of our swing looking westward across Keweenaw Bay from Aura. Where is this swing, Brian?

By Bob Roysdon Az. on Friday, October 31, 2003 - 08:19 am:

That is such a pretty picture. The U.P. has the best photos.Lets pray that we don't loose any more of our servicemen in Iraq.Bob

Theresa and Viginia are the best of friends. Virg's laugh will be missed. I know there is on heck of a card game going on in heaven right now.

By Barb & Dave, MI on Friday, October 31, 2003 - 08:27 am:

In memory of Theresa Judnich, a good person, a dear friend, a quiet inspiration to all who knew her for her unfailing friendship and support when needed. We will always cherish the twinkle in her eyes and the little smile that was always there just under the surface, no matter what. She's playing pinochle with the angels now.

By DB-mich. on Friday, October 31, 2003 - 08:55 am:

Joe Pleshe-of the polka dot band---- here's a local ghost story too. A freind picked up hitch hiker about 10 yrsago near Baraga. When they got near the Baraga cemetary, the ghost wanted to get out. It seems this young man looked like his young brother who got killed in an accident, several years before.--I have seen floating white lights in our home for years. it seems the silicates in the wall plaster give off these lights in the summer. but the previous owner wrote a message on the basement wall;" White lights tonite!!"

By Brian Thomas on Friday, October 31, 2003 - 08:55 am:

The picture is looking west across Big Manistique lake outside of Curtis,MI. It is a beautiful spot and we have experienced many beautiful sunsets...of all colors, textures and intensity. I often sit and contemplate what a wonderful place the Lord has provided for us. Remembering loved ones gone ahead...knowing how much they would have loved to be sitting on this swing...the memories are endless.

Did anyone notice the thin sheet of ice on the Portage in the bridge cam shot? Brrrrrr

By Barb B, MI on Friday, October 31, 2003 - 09:57 am:

Bless you Bob R and WMS- Let's ask God to watch over the kids there and comfort the families left after the loss of the others.

Great picture reminds me of all the summers we were "drug" up to Keewenanu Bay by my Ma, Gertrude Honkala- Brooks. It was so boring as a kid. Was I dreaming!!!? Now there is no better place on earth.

You left us at 93 on October 15, 2001, Ma. Still miss you. Know you are in a better place

By sharon, TC. MI. on Friday, October 31, 2003 - 10:07 am:

From Brian's wife, Sharon: Wish we were sitting on that swing holding hands and forgetting about all our cares in this world. You're becoming an awesome photographer and soon you'll catch up with the Joneses! :) Love you!

Ruth Kestie was married to my cousin, Stan, and I worked with Virginia Pietila at the Bon Ton many moons ago. I was sad to see this month found both of them passing on. My thoughts and prayers go out to their loved ones in the U.P. I can't see and hug right now...

Also remember Mr. Ahnen, Calumet teacher. He was a great teacher.

By Jiggs in California on Friday, October 31, 2003 - 12:10 pm:

Thanks for mentioning the California fire victims, Carole. I was almost one of them (I live in Crestline, near Lake Arrowhead). We're still not allowed back up the hill but all indications are that our house was spared. About 3,000 other families in the state were not so lucky, including six here at the university where I work (Cal State San Bernardino). And of course the 20 (or maybe more) who died. My grandmother grew up in Calumet; my mother in Crystal Falls, which is why I love visiting this site (and we've enjoyed an order of pasties too).

By Scott, MI on Friday, October 31, 2003 - 01:35 pm:

Dan in Fenton: I had James Carstens as well at MTU. (In the late 80's) He was a great enthusiastic instructor. I'm sure he will be missed at MTU.

By JFK- Katy, TX on Friday, October 31, 2003 - 02:10 pm:

In Memory of Nancy Kangas of South Range who passed away on 10/9/03. Anyone who knew her will remember that smile.

By Candy, CA on Friday, October 31, 2003 - 02:20 pm:

I second the mention of Bob Ahnen, former
Calumet High School business teacher. He
set many feet on the path toward successful
business careers, worked tirelessly for the
CHS sports teams and was just an all around
great guy. I am sure he will be sorely missed
by nephew Don Sawaski of Houghton, who
followed in his uncle's footsteps as a teacher.

Now, off the topic, congratulations to Charlie
and Pasty.com for their award as Business of
the Year from the Keweenaw Industrial
Council at last night's Keweenaw Chamber
annual dinner. Very well deserved!

By Connie - Colorado on Saturday, November 1, 2003 - 01:39 pm:

Wow! I haven't heard the name Don Sawaski in a while! I hope he is doing well, all things considered! Many great memories of Houghton High School include him because he was known then as "Coach". I still recall the banner, "The man with the toupee' will go all the way." Hard to believe with all the enthusiasm those Gremlins never won the Copper Bowl. It was fun. I'm also remembering trick-or-treating in Houghton and we would walk all the way out to West Houghton (from right by the school) to go to the Superior Service Garage where an entire bag of goodies was always being handed out. Wonder if Julie Stevens Beck or her sister carry out that same tradition! We'd go to the Chiropractor after that and turn around to go back home. Not knowing then what a Chiropractor was, I thought he was a "cheer up actor" which is a very noble thing! God Bless 'em all!

Sorry I didn't find this til now. Virg was my mom's cousin. She and her siblings were all great people. I always looked forward to the 4th of July in my grandpa's kitchen on G Street with Virg, Alice, Fritz, Ed, my uncle Clem, Aunt Jay, and many others. Or some years it was at Alice's house near the museum. All are gone now, and I miss them all very much.

By Richard Kappler/CA on Friday, January 16, 2004 - 02:22 pm:

In memory of my father, Ronald Kappler, a quiet unassuming man who made everyone crack a smile. "Squint Eye" passed away 7/2/02 with little fanfare. He fought the good fight, but lost to coronary heart disease. Stop smoking now! He didn't until it was too late!
