Hi,This is the best web site anywhere.I am from Indiana but I now live in Arizona.I wanted to know if I put in a boat at the Portage River Light can I go all the way to McLain State park.??Are there small towns along the way ..About how long would this take if I can go ??Bob in Az.

Yes Bob can launch your boat from certain places along the portage canal. 3 places that I know of are the Keeweenaw Entry Docks, Chassell Boat launch but there is a $2 charge there. And another spot closer would be in the City of Houghton right near the Bridge by the city park.

Oh I forgot to mention Bob that there are not really that many small towns along the way, the only one is Oskar. and the trip usually takes about 1 to 1 1/2 hrs by boat on where you launch your boat from.

What direction is this picture facing? Since I don't know where Bumbletown Hill is, I can't get my bearings!

I stood on the same spot Saturday and took video in every direction. Had a great time! The leaves were falling rapidly due to the high winds, but leaves underfoot are good, too, especially at Silver Falls. Maybe I can find the time to add new pics to my site tonight.

Hi all: Just left the UP about 7 miles N of Ameek right on the Lake....about 2 weeks ago. Had 3 and 1/2 months there at theCamp enjoying all our friends, the weather and the serenity, back to the mad house of traffic.... hope to see some of our Mich friends this winter.

Ahh, indeed. Good old Bumbletown. Infamous for its chimney-top snow drifts and gale force winds as well as the namesake of a pretty talented local slo-pitch team back in the hey-day of said sport.

Beautiful picture. We too just left the area and are in Port Charlotte, Fl for the winter. Our summer home is in Lac La Belle. We enjoy this site and check it daily.

I too am confused on the direction. If Mohawk is center top then I assume Calumet would be to the right of the screen. Where is the information booth between Ahmeek and Mohawk? Thank you,

Calumet would be way to the right....out of the pix; the Keweenaw Tourist information booth is most likely just hidden in the trees....it would be at the "top" of the long paved hwy stretch (US 41) as the hwy curves to the right, apparently not visible due to the trees, kinda right where the paved stretch seems to disappear...

Bumbletown hill is just up the hill, to the west of Allouez....

Scott - thank you so much for 'filling my request'. This is 'TERRIFIC' and beautiful. Oh to be 'up home' right now and see all the colors. We do not see that here in Sun City, AZ.

They didn't even put in Eagle River or Eagle Harbor. Maybe you'd have to zoom in a little closer to see 'em. :>) They show Boston, but no Salo or Paavola. But it does give an idea where Bumbletown Hill is. But, yes, it is a beautimous picture. Can almost see my step-dad's house on Bollman St. in Ahmeek.

My grandfather was born in Allouez (Oh ick-- a French named town...). I believe Swedetown was given it's name at the turn of the century when a lot of Scandanavians came to the U.P. to work in the mines. Each culture settled in with their "own" and thus Swedetown was created.

There were a lot of Finns,Swedes,Danes and Norwegians that settled in the U.P. as well as, Italians, Germans,Croatians,French and of Jewish religions...(Lutherans,Cat-licks,Baptists etc...) a multiple melting pot, if you will.

I found this old newspaper article cut out at a rummage sale.I don't know what paper it came from but it gave a brief history of Vaughnville.
Vansville which is located about 1/2 mile south of Phoenix,Keweenaw county.
In Feb. 1849 Joel A.Vaughn was notified that he was the owner of about 8 acres of land in Keweenaw..He and his wife Polly lived in a rough shack until he built a log cabin.He was working at the Cliff Mine at that time.With the influx of people, Vaughn
had 5 buildings on his acreage and the town was named in honor of him., then called Vaughnville.Joel Vaughn died in Oct of 1862 and was buried in the Eagle River Cemetery.His widow sold the property to Morris G.Hanover in Aug. of 1864.
In May 1865 Morris sold it to James Prideaux who set up a grocery store on it.Prideaux died in 1901
Vaughville had a Tavern and a Commercial House and a postoffice.Early names from Vaughnville history are Fecteau,Knivel, Bruneau , Dee , Daniel Sullivan and former
sheriff of Houghton , Joseph Trudell.The Prideaux store supplied the local mining towns with goods.
The store was vacant from 1901-1927 when Mr Alex Rota bought it.He converted it into a resort.Later years Alex's son
Bernard joined in.The Rota family to this day still own it.

Hey Charlie.....My wife and I are out of town working a job in St. Joseph, Michigan for a month. You have made both of us very homesick. Our beautiful house is on the top of Bumbletown hill and we miss home pretty bad. My work takes us away from home every now and then but we keep in touch using the pasty.net. You should have seen the hill this spring when all the apple trees and such flowered. We enjoy everything about living in the Copper Country.

Its going to be a super screensaver for me.It will be great to click on my PC everyday and see Ahmeek and the surrounding area staring me right in the face. What a way to start the workday in "Brew City". Say hello to my brother Larry when he comes in from Negaunee.

As always, a great pic. Although somewhat, well, not quite up to date ... :)

A technical glitch on November 29, 2004, transported visitors back to this date. For a couple of hours folks thought they had fallen into a time warp.

Later that day, we fixed the calendar. Thanks to the sharp Pasty Camwatchers who alerted us to the problem.
