From what I can gather, my return to the Copper Country in time for the fall color last Thursday was just in time. The drive up from Green Bay was glorious, with pockets of color scattered from Florence, Wisconsin through Iron Mountain-Crystal Falls, Covington, L'Anse, Baraga and Chassell. Like the old Simonen and Garfunkel song says, "Eh, but it's good to be back home."

You may be wondering, What is Toivo doing up before noon? - - I'm still messed up with jet lag after a month down under and a looong flight home. But hey, it IS good to be back home.

My apology for letting the Wallpaper of the Week slip more than a month behind. Don't whip me Charlie, I'll try to catch 'em up today.

Patty and I recently bought it. We are thrilled to have what
looks like a piece of the Keweenaw here on the South
Shore. A friend suggested that an artist should live in an
artistic place, and we hope to do that one day.

Welcome back, I'm sure its been a long trip back home but if I'm thinking along the right line that song "BACK HOME AGAIN" was sung by John Denver and not Simon & Garfunkel. Although I didn't hear the song down-under so there may be another version. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Better take a vacation to rest up from vacation. It must have been nice to have that grand opportunity to see so much of the globe. Is you favorite place still the U.P.???

I just found out that I'm the grandson of a Yooper. (I thought I might be) My cousin informed me that our grandfather emigrated from Sweden to the Ishpeming area in the late 1880s or early 1890s and worked in the copper mining industry. We don't know exactly where or what he did but he had gone to machinists school in Sweden so he may have been involved with the machinery. He later moved to Red Wing, Minnesota.

Does anyone know if there are indices on-line or other references that could be searched to find out about his employment, etc.? I'm coming up to the Keweenaw Wednesday for a couple of days of sight-seeing and then to work the Lake Superior Pro Rallye this weekend. I would have some time to do some research if I knew where to go.

Welcome home Toivo! Glad you made it back safe and sound. Can't wait to hear tales of your travels. (For what it's worth in the scheme of things, I'm pretty sure besides John Denver's wonderful song, "Back Home Again," Simon & Garfunkel also had a song with the words, "Hey but it's great to be back home, home is where I want to be, yeah." Does anyone know which song that was???) They reunited and are now on tour, and will probably sing it in their concert... Anyhow, it sure is great to see what a variety of subjects are discussed each day. Thanks to all for sharing their awesome photos of the U.P. and Happy Columbus Day!
