Clyde Elmblad has focused the Guest Gallery spotlight on Baraga and L'Anse in the first half of the 20th century, with a delightful shoebox memory slideshow.

It was during this time period that Cora Anderson was gaining valuable insights about public health and safety, which would influence her years in the Michigan House of Representatives, starting in 1924. No doubt Cora will be mentioned this afternoon, when Jane Nordberg is the scheduled speaker at the annual Keweenaw County Historical Society dinner (6pm at Allouez Community Hall), with the subject "Important Women in Copper Country History". Our thanks to Erik Nordberg, MTU Archivist, for providing Mrs. Anderson's portrait for the Pasty Cam.

Wow, Baraga looks like the wild west, and I guess it was, to those out East back then!
Thanks for the info on the first woman in Michigan's house of Rep. It's good to inform us once in awhile about Herstory.

I have family in Baraga, and some of my fondest memories are of spending many summers there. It looks like the location where the picture was taken is where the Ice rink is now?? I now it's in the same vicinity as the VFW hall. But wasn't Baraga closer to US41 back then? I have personal photo of Baraga during this time taken by family memebers if anyone's interested. Sure a whole lot of history there!

Main St. in Baraga was part of the original main road between L'Anse and Houghton back then.

So what you are saying is, Superior Ave as we know it today was the road that connected Baraga and L'anse? When did US41 go through, or was it alway there?

By Clyde Elmblad...L'Anse, MI on Monday, October 13, 2003 - 11:22 pm:

Superior Ave. (Main St. back then) in Baraga was actually part of the main road that connected L'Anse and Houghton. The main road did not become US41, I believe, until the early 1930's when the depression was going on. It was part of the Governments highway works projects at that time. This is why it's called US41 because the main road was improved using funds from the United States government. Part of that improvement was to move the main road from downtown Baraga to where it is today. Why they did it, I don't know but it created jobs.
Highways such as M38 were built using funds from the State of Michigan. The US Government and State of Michigan also funded the building of the Baraga State Park with help from the local Civilian Conservation Corps at that time. It was all part of President Roosevelt's New Deal during the depression.
Anyway, the old main road went from the Baraga State Park, through downtown Baraga and up behind the Assinins. That road is still there to this day.
I hope this answers your question.

I was also told that the old indian cemetary by the Assinins use to be much closer to Keweenaw Bay but was moved to it's present location to make way for the new highway.
