A question came up recently inquiring about Autumn aerial shots. You'll find several high resolution views from the air at SkyPixs.com. Pilot Rick Anderson also snapped today's Pasty Cam, as he passed just the right spot to frame the lighthouse against a backdrop of blazing glory. Nice job Rick!

By the way, I see in the Daily Mining Gazette this morning that Verisign has relinquished its hijacked control of the Internet's domain name system (see Cam Notes for September 24), which was hampering most spam filters on the Internet. (Bet you were wondering why so many mortgage and viagra ads in your email lately?) Well, we have some BIG NEWS for Pasty.NET members, both here in the Keweenaw, and those who use our nationwide access. In response to the Verisign crisis, we have developed a different approach to fighting spam, which I have personally been using the past couple of weeks with great results. Check the Pasty.net homepage later today for an overview of SpamStop, and how you can clean up your email by logging in. The most notable aspect of this new system: it uses the feedback of our entire user base to 'learn' the characteristics of unwanted commercial email, improving the system as time passes. And there is no fear of losing any legitimate email in the process.

If you live in Southeast Michigan/Northern Ohio, tune in WJR 760 AM this evening for the Internet Advisor program, as we will be giving some details of this new feature. (probably around 10:30pm, 760 on the AM dial).

Well... Unlike Toivo, some people really show up when they say they will. (Evil Grin). Fran from GA and I met here on Pasty Central a long time ago. We are both transplanted Yoopers and now live in Georgia, but still HOURS from each other. Well, she and her family went to Florida for a vacation, and she said she would look us up on the way home, and guess what showed up in my driveway, Friday evening! "A nice white van, containing a Fran". (Sorry, the songwriter in me came out for a moment!) It was so nice to finally meet each other, and we both owe it to this Website for this new found friendship. This sweet lady "adopted me" many, many months ago, and sent us cards on our Birthdays, Anniversary, my son's 13th Birthday... Even a postcard from Florida. She never forgets us and always brings sunshine to us on days when we're under the weather. (Well, what else should we expect from someone from the UP). She and her family came to the ballpark with me to meet Cindy and Joshua, who had a baseball game, and we had some pictures taken there. The only bad thing about the visit is the fact she came bearing no pasties! (LOL).

This Website... I still maintain... Is the most wonderful place on the Internet. Where else would you read a story like this? Thank you, Charlie... I have gotten in touch with old friends and relatives I didn't even know I had, because of Pasty.Net and Fran is the icing on the cake.

Alex Tiensivu, and family

Charlie,

I never appreciated before what a good job you did filtering our Pasty email. Spam is completely out of control at Michigan Tech. Thanks for the nice work.

Flying kinda low, are we? The caption info for today's pix, while nicely worded, does not indicate whether Pilot Anderson was piloting a plane or a boat??? Just wonderin'

Jim Copper Country~
I can't speak for Pilot Rick Anderson, but I DO know that he pilots both a plane and a boat! I've been a passenger/co-pilot, (yes I said co-pilot, as I flew while he snapped!) with Rick in his plane and just want to say what an awesome experience it was to fly with such a talented pilot and photographer! My guess is this photo was as the pilot of his boat, which, in that case he'd actually be called the Skipper! :-)

What structure is at the peak of that hill? Is it a lighthouse?

By Jim Copper Country on Saturday, October 4, 2003 - 06:32 pm:

...yes, that's the Huron Island Light House...

By Carole on Saturday, October 4, 2003 - 07:53 pm:

Welcome back Alex. Have been wondering where you, and Fran, have been. How about posting a picture of you and Fran so the rest of the Pasty family can see what you two look like.

The kids and I flew into Detroit Metro yesterday, greeted by a cold Oct. rain and the warm smiling faces of family. Woke up to a brisk Mich. Oct. morning. We may have left warm sunshine back in California, but it's great to be back home, if even for only two weeks. Love this time of year in Michigan!

By Fran,Ga on Saturday, October 4, 2003 - 09:58 pm:

I'm back home after visiting Fla for a few weeks. We had a nice time but I REALLY missed Pasty Cam.The first thing I did after we hauled the stuff in from the van was check it out.
As Alex said we stopped by and got to meet him,Cindy and their son Josh. It sure was nice. We did take pictures on my sons camera.I will see about getting him to post some for me. I haven't even seen them yet!!!! I know one thing for SURE I do not want to live anywhere near ATLANTA!!!

are there more photos available of
lighthouse/huron island? i have a
particular interest. thnx.

By Mary Drew on Saturday, October 4, 2003 - 10:37 pm:

Angie, Mn~~
No, I'm not retired, just tired!
Actually I work 24/7, but make time to do some fun things in order to keep my sanity. I own/operate a State Licensed Adult Foster Care Home, besides being on the local School Board, Lions Club and official "volunteer" Pasty Gallery Moderator, that's just for starters......

I operate the Home by myself, with help from my husband when he's not working his day job and several wonderful "lady-sitters", that I can call upon when I need to get away to do "fun things in my daily life"!!

Our thanks to WJR and Foster Braun for the air time tonight on the station in Detroit. Actually, we were able to pick up the braodcast loud and clear here in Eagle River. Rather than talk about our SpamStop program, we discussed the Pasty.NET wireless project, as we continue efforts to bring broadband to the far reaches of the Keweenaw.

For local Pasty.NET members, as well as those on our nationwide network, you can learn how to activate the new SpamStop service for your email account in our Support Forum.

mh...I use to have guest gallery photos of the Huron Island Lighthouse and other Baraga County photos here but decided to delete my personal gallery. I made a website for the Huron Island Lighthouse Preservation Association that may interest you.

By mh, mi on Sunday, October 5, 2003 - 01:32 am:

thanks clyde,
for your link and i guessed the lighthouse was
no longer occupied by the coast guard. too much
other better technology out there.

i did visit the lighthouse (very meticulous)
in the very early sixties with my uncle from
baraga, alfred hill (a commercial fisherman).

the dock to the island is on the southwest side
of the island. the view on pasty.com appears
to be more from the ne or ene side.

Rolling on the floor laughing... What's the matter with Atlanta, Fran? Could it be...

TRAFFIC?

I will post some pix as soon as Fran E-Mails me some. Dumb-dumb here, left his camera home, so I'm glad Fran was prepared!

By Alex Tiensivu, Georgia on Sunday, October 5, 2003 - 02:29 am:

To Carole... Thanks for missing me! I've just been busy lately... I come and look but haven't had time to post messages.

I've missed everyone here, too. Just a hectic time.

Alex

Alex, when you come up to that meeting in Ringgold this week it will seem like you have died and gone to heaven!!! There is much less traffic here in N.Ga. You will be getting some pictures today probably.

>>For local Pasty.NET members, as well as those on our nationwide network, you can >>learn how to activate the new SpamStop service for your email account in our Support >>Forum.

Is it possible to use this service if your ISP is anything other than Pasty.NET?

Thanks, Bill

By Charlie at Pasty Central on Monday, October 6, 2003 - 07:03 am:

Yes, Bill, although Pasty.NET has dial-in access in all 50 states, we have Pasty.NET members who connect by other means - satellite, cable, DSL - who use Pasty.NET for their email. You could request Verizon to route your existing mail to a Pasty account, and begin enjoying the benefits of SpamStop. Do you ever travel and need dial-in access while away from your broadband connection? Pasty.Net Nationwide may be right for you. Email us for details.
