Roger Kangas has created a nice slideshow of seasonal sights over in the guest gallery. Sorry for the late start this Monday morning. Was waiting for Toivo to check in, but apparently he's still somewhere down under.

Also our apologies for some confusion with Sunday's {Shoebox Memory}. We were not aware it was a scanned photo, and have been unable to get permission from the photographer's family to share it on these pages. Anyone out there related to V.A. Lundgren, Jr or his family?

By Mary Drew on Monday, September 29, 2003 - 01:30 pm:

Yum!! I'm eating one from my own apple tree right now and it looks just like these! Nice and juicy, crisp, it's a good one!

By Missin the UP from NJ on Monday, September 29, 2003 - 02:35 pm:

Yum yum yum!!! They're very big on apples in this area. Just over the NY State border are several apple farms. The roads heading up there on weekends this time of year are a parking lot. Folks going to get apples, and Pumpkins. But one of those UP apples would taste so much better, they sure are pretty! At times like this the computer just isn't interactive enough.

Just goes to show--the best things in life are the simple pleasures!

I'm so glad you shared this photo. I was browsing thru Roger's album yesterday and instantly made this one our wallpaper. I really like this photo!

By Tom & Chris, Lombard, IL on Monday, September 29, 2003 - 03:56 pm:

Well, we are back in Chicago from 5 wonderful days and nights in the beautiful U.P. Here is my "alien pasty report". We ate these pasties:
* Sheldon's Bakery Houghton
* Tamarack Restaurant Copper Harbor (a breakfast pasty)
* Little white pasty house on M-28 between Ishpeming and Munising.
* Muldoon's Pasties on M-28 just as you get into Munising
* Tahquamenon Falls Brewery

Our rating: Sheldon's were the best: A+++. Tamarack had the best crust. The others were great, also, (all A+s) but the first two were our favorites. Mrs. Muldoon had the best beef gravy, though.

By ed on Monday, September 29, 2003 - 04:16 pm:

Never, never ate a pasty with gravy...they are to be eaten with catsup.

By Missin the UP from NJ on Monday, September 29, 2003 - 04:52 pm:

I'm thinkin' gravy may be an interesting way to enhance a pasty. My adult son has concocted a catsup and Hellman's mix that he insists is the best way to eat pasty. I bought some of the "Really Secret Pasty Sauce" and will try that next time I make em. They're even good cold with nothing on em! Hmmm... Maybe there's more than one way to eat a Pasty!! (I think I'll always end up going back to catsup, tho)

By walter p tampa on Monday, September 29, 2003 - 05:02 pm:

what kind of apples are they also pasties are really great with beef gravy as well as with other stuff but again preferences are personal unto oneself

By Cindy, St. Clair Shores on Monday, September 29, 2003 - 06:14 pm:

This picture really excites the senses. You can almost taste the sweetness, feel the smoothness of the skin, hear the crunch of leaves that have already fallen to the ground, see the beauty of nature's colors, and almost smell the aroma of a fresh-baked apple pie. Thanks!

By Roger Kangas on Monday, September 29, 2003 - 06:20 pm:

Walter, these particular apples are the wild, green and red variety. In addition, they were exceptionally sweet and crisp. (I really don't know what variety they are, but they begged to be photographed.)

Roger

By Dave - Colorado on Monday, September 29, 2003 - 06:23 pm:

Those apples look a lot like a nice crisp, sour Macintosh... at least I would prefer to believe that is what they are... They would make a wonderful pie!!

By Dan in Ca. on Monday, September 29, 2003 - 07:06 pm:

Tom & Chris..Glad you had a good time in the Yoop.
Also thanks for the pasty sampling update. I recommended the Sheldon's Bakery pasty, and am pleased to hear that you liked them. ( I have no vested interest in the place, I just love food) I was back home this summer and they were recommended to me by my brother, so why not share a good find. I too thought they were wonderful. (Also the tarts are very good) An old family friend owns the place, and it was a blast from the past for my tastebuds. I sure enjoy the food when I'm there. Not a lot of pasties are available where I live in California, but I have made them myself on occasion. And I do add rutabaga to mine. Enjoy your day.

The Detroit Free Press has a feature story with excellent pictures of the monks at Jacob's Falls.

By Viva la Veggie!!! on Monday, September 29, 2003 - 07:51 pm:

Here I go, asking to get flamed and abused again, but it seems like as good a time as any to point out that there are very few vegetarian pasties available in the UP (hip hip hooray for Jean Kay's Pasties), and no vegan pasties that I've been able to find.

By Barry Seymour, Manhattan Beach, CA on Monday, September 29, 2003 - 07:56 pm:

I am eagerly waiting for this one to be made into a WOW - I need it at a higher resolution for my huge screen. What a beauty of an apple!

By BC Bill. Southern LP MI on Monday, September 29, 2003 - 08:21 pm:

From the food channel. Ketchup and catsup are both acceptable spellings. If you tap the 57 on the Heintz bottle, it will flow out. Tried it today at lunch. It didnt work.
Tonights channel 3 Kalamazoo news. The Michigan apple crop is up 95% from last years. Expected harvest 970 million pounds. They should have used your picture. The one on their sight looks like a lemon.
From me. Three major food groups are meat potatoes and GRAVY.

Thanks so much Bob for the link to the priests at Jacob Falls. My husband and I were there this past weekend and had the most fabulous cookies. Oatmeal Raisin Peanut Butter with choclate chips. Yum Yum ! Also came home with a box of different jams. Can't wait to go back. Wish it was open in the winter when we are snowmobiling up there.

By nlm, brighton, mi. on Tuesday, September 30, 2003 - 12:55 am:

How about trying cheeese on top of the pasty...really melts nicely...also go for the catsup....many strange tastes from all of us pasty lovers!

By troll in eagle harbor on Tuesday, September 30, 2003 - 02:11 am:

nlm,brighton...Have you ever tried peppercorn ranch dressing on a pasty?I've talked a few guys that I work with into trying them dressed that way. They don't use ketchup anymore.Hooked em on the salad dressing.Who says an old troll can't teach a yooper a new trick? heh!heh!

By Sam/Alabama on Tuesday, September 30, 2003 - 05:09 am:

Being from the South, I gotta vote for Gravy, Although I have had them with many other combinations, such as catsup, red hot sause, sour cream/grated cheese, and just plain and dry ! But at home and out of the oven, Pass the Gravy Please !!!

By Mike B, Pittsburgh, Wishin I was back in the Yoop on Tuesday, September 30, 2003 - 07:07 am:

This may sound strange, but I love them with butter. Take a nice warm pasty, cut it in half, hold the one half like a sandwich, spread some butter(real butter) across the cut side and let it melt down into the meat & taters. You just can't beat that on a cool, October day (or any day for that matter).

By multigenerational yooper, michigan on Tuesday, September 30, 2003 - 07:22 am:

For those who love veggy pasties there is no need to look beyond the doors of Sheldons. They have also been available at the Keweenaw Co-op of a weekly basis. From a veggy lover friend, she says Sheldon makes the best.

By Walt, Ohio on Tuesday, September 30, 2003 - 07:39 am:

If the pasty is GOOD it needs NO, I mean NO added stuff. Why alter the taste of perfection.

By Charlie at Pasty Central on Tuesday, September 30, 2003 - 08:48 am:

If anyone's getting hungry, we are updating the online order form for October this morning here at Pasty Central. Hundreds of our USDA-inspected pasties are shipped every week throughout the country, from Calumet. And we do have veggy pasties, too! Just indicate this in the "Special Intructions" box on the form.

Here's an important note:

If you are ordering from any other website, or by phone, be sure to verify that the pasties are USDA inspected. While any bakery can ship veggy products with just local health department approval, only federally inspected kitchens, like Pasty Central, are legally permitted to ship or wholesale meat pasties. Pasty Central is the only source for U.P. style pasties in the Copper Country which fulfills USDA inspection requirements. Order some for delivery next week!

By Martha L., Indiana on Tuesday, September 30, 2003 - 09:20 am:

I believe Toni's Country Kitchen in Laurium also has veggy pasties. Good stuff! I'm still trying to get Eric Frimodig, owner, to will me his recipe for saffron-raisin bread! YUM YUM! We both went to the one-room school at Copper Harbor(although at different times) and his father, "Mac", talked my father into coming to work for Fort Wilkins State Park when Mac was Park Manager. When my dad and mom got married, Mac and his wife stood up with my mom and dad.

Oh well, I guess for now I'll have to wait until the secret recipe isn't quite to closely guarded. Makes my mouth water just thinking about it.

By Lee, Mi. on Tuesday, September 30, 2003 - 09:44 am:

Well, this is nutz, it is snowing like mad. Who let Heikki Lunta out early on parole? The snowplow just went down Calumet Avenue... Maybe I am still asleep and dreaming.

By Troll Diva, Ferndale,MI on Tuesday, September 30, 2003 - 11:20 am:

Ketchup on a pasty? Thats a thing of the past! Gots to use Toivo & Eino's pasty sauce!!!

By jill, visiting the UP from Australia on Tuesday, September 30, 2003 - 02:27 pm:

From an Australian pasty lover, meat or vegetarian. I like my pasties with sweet chilli sauce. Don't know if it's readily available in the UP!

By CHris & Tom, Lombard, IL on Tuesday, September 30, 2003 - 04:23 pm:

I asked for Toivo's sauce at Sheldon's and the girl had not heard of it. We ate those pasties with KETCHUP. Perhaps that is why they were our favorites - I dunno.

We also visited the monks at the Jam Pot and spent $50 on scrumptious jams and breads and cookies. These dudes can bake - oh yeah! The story says there are 5; the monk at the counter there are only 4. Whatever, I cannot believe all that they do. I would recommend ordering from them (see pasty.com for their site link) AND also from Charlie for his wonderful pasties. We always order a bunch for New Year's and also the calendar.

By Karen P, MN on Wednesday, October 1, 2003 - 12:16 pm:

Yeah to Walt, Ohio. You said a mouthful. Martha L. from Indiana. Please e-mail me, I will send you an excellent safron bread recipe with raisins. I've never eaten at Toni's Country Kitchen so I can't verify that mine are as good. They may be a suitable alternative.

By janine, new jersey on Wednesday, October 1, 2003 - 05:35 pm:

Mike B., I was astonished that you thought putting butter on a pasty might be considered strange. of course that is the way to eat them, along with tons of ketchup.

By Dina on Wednesday, October 1, 2003 - 10:22 pm:

CRUNCH!!!!! What type of apples here? They must taste heavenly!!!

By UP Troll on Thursday, October 2, 2003 - 02:02 am:

tons of butter and ketchup is the best way to eat a well made, hot pasty. I caught someone eating one cold with mustard the other day... must admit it was the first time I'd ever seen that!
Pre-made bottled 'pasty sauce' is such a marketing gimmick... That certainly wasn't invented for us local pasty eaters!

By Missin the UP from NJ on Thursday, October 2, 2003 - 03:19 pm:

Marketing gimmick or not I say "go Yoopers" if a couple of them found a really fun way to part the people from their money. What the heck, everyone's gotta make a living! Wish I'd thought of it and then maybe I'd be back in the Yoop and not here in NJ.

By jvm in clinton twp, mi on Thursday, October 2, 2003 - 09:32 pm:
