I'd like to know the story behind today's Shoebox Memory from Dave Gayman. Perhaps it was Sunday morning and the kids were ready for church early, deciding to skip some stones while they waited for the grown-ups. Perhaps Dave could give us a little more background?

Where was this taken?

Another neat picture. This could be a Sunday shot, but I remember my Mom making us dress up when we went to visit relatives, too.
Bet this pic has something in the backround that triggers some yoopers memories today. That looks like it could be a resort or large camp in the backround.

Actually, I have no idea were this was/is -- it's a scan of an ad from the "Lure of Michigan's Upper Peninsula, Vacations 1958," p. 128. The ad is for the Menominee Chamber of Commerce. The photo credit is V.A. Lundgren, Jr.

I chose to scan it because the siblings are about the age and relationship of me and my sister in the 1950s, when we hung around Lake Michigan near Naubinway for a couple of weeks each summer. However, we would *not* have been dressed up. As my sister puts it, "I have pictures of us in refugee children's clothing."

To be fair to my parents, if we *had* ever been dressed up, we both would have wrecked our finery by plunging up to our necks in Lake Michigan, or decorated it transferring pine resin from the trees onto our duds.

Want "dressup" memories??? I grew up in the "50's" and our mother from the proper east coast made us dress up to go shopping in Houghton, and you wouldn't believe how gussied up we got to fly in a DC3 from Houghton to Marquette!!! Times change :)

I have to fly to the lower part of the UP on Wednesday and just checked flightwatch weather and they are predicting SNOW? This was the shortest summer in memory. I thought we could make one more quick flight to the Houghton area for color change, but it looks like the only change will be to white............

"Dressup" memories...I also grew up in the "50's" and clearly remember wearing skirts to go shopping and always wearing dresses, nylons and heels for those all important Friday or Saturday night dates. We always had to dress up to visit friends or family too. I truly enjoy my jeans and t shirts, but I think that dressing up once in awhile would also be nice to see.

Tonight Edie and I worked at Still Waters until well after dark, and on our way home we took Cliff Drive. It was raining when we left Calumet, and by the time we reached Seneca Lake, it turned into snow. Big, heavy flakes, with enough accumulation along the side of the road to make a snowman. The dashboard indicator showed outside temp to be 37.

John Dee had predicted snow for Monday. Missed it by just a day.

This looks me to me like Hayward Bay off Green Bay,
just North of Menominee.

Aackk!! Is that snow on the Holiday Inn parking lot?!?! It is bad enough that it was falling last night but to stay until noon the next day! Winter is coming.

I love getting dressed up to go shopping! I didn't grow up that way, I just learned to enjoy it over the years.

Shopping in Houghton back then would certainly include Penney's and Vertin's. What nice memories!

Karen P, MN~

If you're referring to the bridge cam photo, that would be the Ramada parking lot and it's rain puddles on the edges. But don't worry...snow is in the forecast for Wednesday...Aaackk, is right!!!
