Wakefield
At the crossroads of M-28 and US-2 in the western U.P., Wakefield is a village of about 2,000 residents... and a few acrobatic pets. Rick Sanchez caught this active pup in midair, perhaps on his way to retrieve a frisbee or a duck. Reminds me of the water hazard at the 6th hole of Keweenaw Mountain Lodge.

Still haven't heard from Toivo, wandering around somewhere in the Australian outback. He's missing one of my favorite seasons in the U.P., as colors will be peaking over the next 2 weeks.

Ahhh....The enthusiasm of a dog....cool picture!

Nice picture, I love shots that capture motion. That pup is on a mission!

Awe the colors of fall. What a magnificent time of the year. I will be coming up from Green Bay the first weekend of Oct. Would a good drive be from Escanaba to Lake of the Clouds and over to Ontonagon for lunch on Sunday? Or a trip on Fed Highway 13 in Delta/Alger county? I have done both in the past but want to share the experience with my girlfriend who has never feasted on the colors of a UP fall. Let me know of some drives that you fellow pasty.com'ers have done.

By Mary Lou on Friday, September 26, 2003 - 09:03 am:

Yooper Joe.....I vote for Escanaba to Hwy 13 to Munising to Marquette to Ontonagon...It is a bit out of your way.....but, well worth the extra time. One of the most beautiful drives I have ever taken was on a sunny day on Highway 13...the first weekend in October.....just outside of Munising... the leaves overhead covering the roadway were like golden lace!! It was wonderful!! Please stop here in Escanaba and take a drive down to Ludington Park to see our beautiful park with Stonington Peninsula in the background.....

It's a little far from your end, but Wm Curley Hwy from 123 to Brimley is my view one of the best drives. It has national reviews and not only does it have some of the best color over and beside the road (it travels thru Hiawatha Forest), but you get some great views of Lake Superior and the Pendill's Creek Fish Hatchery is a cool place to visit in the fall.

What a way to start a very busy day, with a giggle over an enthusiastic(sp?) pup. Thanks Rick!

By Gal in Kalamazoo on Friday, September 26, 2003 - 10:55 am:

I hear Yooper Joe's girlfriend is quite a catch! No wonder he's thoughtful enough to plan out a little Fall color tour so carefully....

You should take some pictures while you're up there, YJ, and send them to pasty.com! ;)

The dog is mine. I am a Yooper from Wakefield. My brother Rick is just a professional photographer.

By gs in az on Friday, September 26, 2003 - 01:06 pm:

We have a cat named musti gisaa (sp?) Funny how that's such a popular name for black pets :)

By from AZ on Friday, September 26, 2003 - 01:15 pm:

Thats because it means black cat in Finn

By Missin the UP from NJ on Friday, September 26, 2003 - 01:33 pm:

Hahaha! LOVE that pup! And since we don't have another picture showing him in the water, we are left to imagine that he ran right across the surface of the lake! SUPERDOG!
Pictures like this bring smiles and giggles to the viewer, and that's a gift!
THANK YOU!

By gs in az on Friday, September 26, 2003 - 01:37 pm:

That's what makes it funny ;)

Yooper Joe-try US-41 to Copper Harbor, then Brockway Mtn. Drive, then M-26 back to US-41.(typical Keweenaw tour) Stop in Houghton at the Ambassador, and get a sub or tostada pizza before heading to Ontonagon & Lake of the Clouds. Your gal has a good idea about pictures. I would be up north in a week also, if I didn't already have a trip to WV planned. Have fun.

By Wish I were a Yooper, Rochester MN on Friday, September 26, 2003 - 01:55 pm:

Nice drive to see fall colors:

Take US 41 North to Copper Harbor.
Loop back down via 26.

By Wish I were a Yooper, Rochester MN on Friday, September 26, 2003 - 01:56 pm:

Guess Steve beat me too it...

By Lorelei, Michigan on Friday, September 26, 2003 - 03:25 pm:

Yooper Joe! After Lake of the Clouds, if you head back to M-26, go north. Take a right @ M-38 and a left at the old railroad tracks. That will lead you to the trestles. There are some beautiful sights to see from the trestles.

Enjoy

By Frank, St. Charles IL on Friday, September 26, 2003 - 03:32 pm:

Yooper Joe/Gal in Kal, no fall color trip to the U.P. should miss the covered road drive out of Houghton. Drive slow, enjoy the woods, explore Redridge, and have lunch in Freda at the lakeshore.

By Karen in Oshkosh, WI on Friday, September 26, 2003 - 03:46 pm:

Yooper Joe, my kids & their spouses (mid-20's to mid-30's) love the Ambassador's tostado pizza. However...depending on her tastes...I discovered The Four Seasons Tea Room in Houghton this summer while vacationing back in the Keweenaw. We lived in Houghton for 16 years, moved away a couple of years ago and NOW there is a beautifully appointed, delightful tea room downtown! It is on the same side of the street as the Ambassador, but a few blocks before. I think this is a spot not to be missed. You do NOT have to be dressed up to go there, but the atmosphere, service and food would impress the Queen of England! Take her there!!

To all those who visit pasty from the Green Bay area there is a new bar dedicated to the great Yoop - its the Keweenaw bar and its in downtown Depere. Went there last night to check it out, can't wait to try there fish frys. And to all those who posted so far, thank you for the suggestions for a color tour. I will definately take my gal up Brockway drive and down M-26 towards Lake of the Clouds. We will probably start at camp which is off of Fed Highway 13 so I will definately be taking the digital cam with us. Thanks again for all your suggestions.

By Nancy Nelson, WI on Friday, September 26, 2003 - 06:01 pm:

Hey dere, Joe--Wherse dat bar in da DePere??? I work there, and haven't seen it.
Great shot of the water-walking dog. That's the kind of shot we all hope to catch with our digicams!

By Julie Stevens Beck, MI on Friday, September 26, 2003 - 06:18 pm:

The Keweenaw bar in DePere is owned by a local gal and her husband. She is a Halkola from Hancock. They have good yooper food. Great place for yoopers to visit while there in the DePere area. Relieve a little homesickness with good food and good company.

By Ken from da UP, on Friday, September 26, 2003 - 11:22 pm:
