Beating Toivo to the punch this morning... A few minutes ago our dog flapped her ears to wake me up, as she has so many times in the wee hours. When I hopped out of bed and looked down across the dunes outside our bedroom window here in Eagle River, there was a blazing display of Northern Lights. Like glowing storm clouds dancing across the sky, they flared up... then slowly faded away. See anything like that 'down under', Toivo?

There's another firestorm raging on the Internet this week. It has to do with the way un-resolved domain names are handled. If you're into the technical stuff, here's an article which explains it. Basically, Verisign has disrupted the normal flow of Net traffic by making all non-existant domain names take your browser to their website. Traditional 'spam filtering' tools, like the ones we use at Pasty.NET, have been scrambled by this move... and the sparks are flying. Lawsuits, boycotts, public outcry... we haven't seen this much controversy since they changed the flavor of Classic Coca-Cola.

So, our apologies to the thousands of Pasty.NET members - here in the U.P. and throughout the U.S. - who have been wondering why so much unsolicited (and unwanted) email all of a sudden. Our system administrator, Jonathan Hopper, is diligently working (like so many other network managers) to restore our member's safeguards against spam, in spite of Verisign's ill-conceived new policy.

Thanks to Jonathan also for staying up late a few years ago to capture this Aurora Borealis display above Lake Superior. I seem to remember a few recent Northern Lights photos in the Guest Gallery, but can't find them because the search feature doesn't seem to be working. . . Oh, Jonathan...

Spectacular! The Northern Lights are always a thrill! We went looking a few nights ago and only saw stars...

The Fall (and Spring) equinox is always a prime time for the "Northern Lights"...word is that on Monday the 29'th things might really get interesting with the Aurora...so keep the cameras ready, sleep during the day,....wish we had these visions down here in tennessee!

I sure miss the Northern Lights. We haven't seen them here at the Grand Canyon. Yes, we have awesome views here, but there is nothing like the northern lights. Thanks for the picture Charlie and Jonathan.

Kudos to the patient and alert photographers of today's Northern Lights pix.....the lites are a very elusive subject and hard to really "catch" good on film. I know....I've been trying for over 30 years, and rarely have I been able to come with anything comparable to these shots! One has to be in the right place, at the right time, with the right equipment...and then also be exceedlingly lucky. Again, some GOOD views of the Lights!!

CONNIE....Take the first 2 track on the left as you're leaving E.H.via the Cut Off Rd.Follow the trail up the hill and keep going.Cross the creek(feels kind of nice on the feet) and continue uphill. Kind of hard to get lost unless you're prone to wandering through the bush.Follow the creek down stream a ways and treat your eyes to some fanastic rock cliffs,cascades and waterfalls.Good luck!

Hi Gang....If you're heading "back home" to the Copper Country don't forget a warm jacket. Yesterday (Tues.)...I was driving through Laurium about noon and saw a lady walking with mittens and a hooded winter jacket......last night friends and I went to the Houghton for dinner and I had to wear two sweaters....I forgot to take warm clothing!!..I keep forgetting the wind off of Lake Superior can be bone chilling.... When I left Escanaba on Sunday it was sunny and hot.
