While the U.S. is just beginning the day, it's after 9 pm in the evening here in Melbourne, a city 50,000+ on the southern tip of Australia. That's bigger than any town in the U.P. I may be away from Pasty Cam for a few days, not sure what to find for Internet access in the Outback. From what I've seen so far, though, they could have better connections than Copper Harbor.

Hate to mention this but the privately owned Houghton Douglas Falls in Lake Linden has been closed to the general public because of antics such as shown in the repelling picture. The owner was tired of rocks being loosened and the increase in accidents.

This picture is at the HUNGARIAN FALLS not the houghton douglass fall's. but you are right the houghton douglass falls is private property.

Yes, MI..."Antics" closed the Falls. "Antics" also closed all the undergrounds in the Keweenaw,
"Antics" are why most of the trails and roads are being closed. "Antics" caused the Kingston shaft to be dynamited, "Antics" caused the Stamp Sands at Gay and Five Mile Point beach to be off-limits.

Many hope that the Keweenaw will be a closed off, "tourists only in DESIGNATED safe areas,"
type of place. Perhaps like Door County Wisconsin where you can hardly get to the woods or scenery without paying some sort of fee.

I'm just glad I saw it for many years before those "antics" closed off all the good stuff.

when i was kid we would climb these falls without a rope!!!!,Frank O. found the body of a TOOT one rainny night after he rolled off the ledge he was sleeping on,drunk i think. The bluff was a great swimming hole.

I visited spectacular Douglass Houghton falls before they were closed. As a longtime Keweenaw "tourist" who practices "leave no trace" hiking, & camping, I wish everybody who visits these wonderful places would hold them in such high regard as to not trash them, and spoil the experience for future visitors.

You are so right Steve. Hiked to the Montreal falls a few weeks ago. A couple of mile walk to a beautiful sight and yet at the river mouth there were piles of beer cans and bottles.
Also - for Bob-b, what's a TOOT? Heard this expression from my wife's cousin, a Calumet resident. Not 100% sure what it means.

I'm with you. About 10 years ago I "introduced" my hubby to the Douglass Houghton falls. He was amazed I remembered where it was after all these years even with the old sign gone, I still remembered where it was. Since it is privately owned now, is there a fence there with a No Trespasing sign?

Troll and Steve: Unfortunately now there IS a restriction to access. As there is to many other wonderful areas in the Keweenaw.

When my kids and I used to camp and hike we would scrupulously clean up after ourselves. Apparently others didn't and that's all those who want to restrict access needed for an excuse.

What is a TOOT? This question really makes me feel old. I went to da Tech when it was called Michigan College of Mining and Technology. At that time the mines were in operation, and Tech wasn't the only show in town.
TOOT was a name of derision used by locals to describe any Tech Student. You didn't want to be called a TOOT, and you had better not be caught at the Hancock Teen Center hustling local girls.

TOOT = Tech Out Of Towner

As others have said, normally a derogatory term applied to students from out of the area by local natives in the context of observing questionable behavior.

Thanks guys for clarify what a TOOT is. I was raised up yonder and always heard the name TOOT and knew it meant a tech student but never knew what it actually stood for....see, the things you learn on pasty.com!

I'm surprised Ann Arbor residents haven't picked up this term for Michigan students, whom they already consider "MOOT".

for people worried about "antics", there is a big diffrence in the rock at DH falls and the rock at Hungarian. The stuff at DH tends to crumble as someone mentioned, but it is not as big of a problem at hungarian.

Thank you mi & TT LL! You too have used the old "Houghton Douglass" name for the Falls. I mentioned that about a year and a half ago and created a bit of a stir. The story is that the Falls were named after both Douglas Houghton and Christopher C. Douglass. C.C. Douglass was a member of Houghton's survey party and stayed in the Keweenaw where he was one of the founders of Houghton and Hancock along with being an officer for many mines. The names were evidently deliberately reversed from alphabetical order to avoid the unfounded conclusion that the falls were named after Douglas Houghton. Once the old sign disappeared in the '60's, the name Douglas Houghton stuck.
"Antics" have been going on for years - or as long as man has been in the Copper Country. The difference today is that being responsible for one's own well being and actions is not an expectation in the legal system. Used to be if someone happened to do something that meritted a nomination for the annual Darwin Award on your cliff or waterfall, if not killed, they would have the personal integrity to limp off and admit they did something stupid. If they did manage to kill themselves, their next of kin, despite the tragedy, would concede that the deceased did something stupid. Today, the owner of the cliff or waterfall gets sued because they did not warn the person that falling off a cliff could cause severe personal injury (duh!)and they(cliff owner)did not put up adequate guard rails etc. Property Insurance Companies are well aware of this and force people that own attractive property like Houghton Douglass Falls to restrict or prohibit access. One wonders what will happen if someone takes a flyer off Brockway.
The Copper Country is moving into the 21st Century - like it or not. As to the beer cans etc. - there have always been pigs among us, but shooting them is illegal. Too bad they are so inconsiderate.

I feel that the biggest problem with America today is the lack of accountability. Instead of admitting that one has done something that lacked what would be considered typical common sense, they figure to haul someone into court to cash in on their own ignorance. Aargh, it just frosts me to hear about idiots ruining it for decent people who want nothing more than to cast their eyes on Gods beautiful creation.(I could REALLY get on my soapbox here, but I'll spare you all from my vent)

Hungarian falls is in Tamerack. take 6th street, where that ends a seasonal road starts.go up the hill and the first road to your left will take you to an area to park. from there, just follow the trail.

Amen, Paul/IL! Why is common sense so uncommon any more? As kids we climbed up the Houghton Douglas Falls areas and didn't leave junk around or make a mess. Ditto with the Hungarian Falls. Brings to mind a question: Why are there so many more horses a__es than there are horses? Anyway, I love to see those falls here on the pastycam. Thanks, to Charlie and those photogs.

to paul in illinois, someone has already taken the plunge off Brockway, three years ago Charlie Bell slipped off a railing bench, it's presumed; died the next day from his injuries. May he RIP.

Is there any credence to what i have heard about TOOTs: in olden times one would refer to a man of the insti-"toot", a name from way back in Tech's history???????

I went to Tech in the late 70's and my recollection of what TOOT stood for, was that the college was filled with engineers. This was twisted around the concept of a train engineer who 'TOOT'ed the train's whistle, hence the "Toot"s. Could be way off. Virtually all of the locals seemed to hold most, if not all, Tech students with great contempt, even though the town's population seemed to double and greatly benefitted from the influx of cash attendent with the influx of students. Ah, the cursed love-hate relationship. Can't live with 'em, can barely live without 'em.

I have to agree with Alan of Missouri: I was a second generation Toot in the early 70's, and we all thought we were called Toots because of the townspeople thinking that "engineer" meant that you worked on the trains. Even though I was a local, I was still called a Toot.
As for the controversy surrounding the closing of these beautiful Keweenaw sites - blame the lawyers. At least Tech is not producing any of those!

Businesses loved em, most locals could do without.
Had enough local teen-age riff-raff, tech just added more, even though it was just a small percent of the student body.

To the troll,mi,the bluff is up stream of the falls and down alittle from the dam.Nice sm.er falls on backend of the dam also. To the TOOTS,that went for hustling the Lake Linden girls also,we sent them a run'n back to Houghton in the 60's.Not that we did not like Tech,it's a great college but some of the studends mostly trolls,some locals,where jerks!! Power to the Whiz Kids.

There seems to be some negative feelings towards my "antics". So what people are saying is that people who enjoy the outdoors are committing antics.

What I do may not be safe, but so if every outdoor activity. If I get hurt, then it's my fault and noone elses.

I visited these falls while at Tech in the 70's, but have not been able to find them on return vists. I recall taking side streets through Lake Linden then walking up a ravine. Are they marked?

Michael....I would guess that everyone posting on this site enjoys the outdoors....we are "Yoopers"and wise enough to respect nature. You are a young person who needs guidence....from us older folks.....we don't want to see you or your peers injured for many reasons. If you had fallen volunteer rescue service would have risked their lives to save you, if you had handicapped yourself society would be responsible to care for you and if you had fallen to your death your parents and friends would have broken hearts forever........Through the years many young folks have fallen to their deaths on the rocks of the beautiful Copper Country. Have fun..... but no "antics" ...
