Wow - - Dan just keeps on delighting U.P. nature lovers everywhere with his steady hand and eye for the right moment. No matter how trying the day has been, I usually find a moment of peace and solitude every time I log onto the Pasty Cam Guest Gallery.

This has been one of those trying days. I bought a digital camera really cheap, and struggled with it for several hours. It may be taking pictures, but I can't get them to download. I guess all the other Pasty Camists won't have any competition from me for awhile yet. Time to get my funny money back.

Dan,

Great shot is this out near Silver City?...maybe towards union bay camp area??

I am thinking it is close to home...near the porkies anyway.

Thanks for the "U.P. fix"

By Sleepless in Mich on Tuesday, September 16, 2003 - 03:15 am:

Yep, this is a WOW.

Dan- what kind of touch-ups or enhancing was done to this, if any?

By transplanted Troll living in Germany on Tuesday, September 16, 2003 - 03:56 am:

Well, I guess it is time I add a comment to this great website. I have been enjoying the great pictures and downloading them for my desktop for over a year now. Living in East Germany is not like living (or visiting in my case) the U.P. This picture is a great one!! Thank you PastyCam that you don't charge a fee to download these pictures for a pleasant desktop!!

By Donna on Tuesday, September 16, 2003 - 05:58 am:

Breathtaking Dan!

Don't know if you know or not, but there is an "amateur" (don't think you fit in that category, by all means) photography contest for Lake Superior shots:

http://www.lakesuperior.com/news/contest.html

I think you ought to be entering. Along with many of our other Pasty camists! Go for it Yoopers! Give them your best!

By Tbel on Tuesday, September 16, 2003 - 07:22 am:

Donna;
Dan is a full fledged professional. He's been taking pics of the beuatifull U.P. for a long time now. I believe he's recieved at least a few professional awards. You can see more of his work
at Quietlywild.com.

By Leslie at the Northern Lights Lodge; Cadillac on Tuesday, September 16, 2003 - 07:41 am:

WOW for sure! Absolutely gorgeous! Dan, what a beautiful view to wake up to... thank you!

By Mary Drew on Tuesday, September 16, 2003 - 09:48 am:

I know this is repetitive, but as soon as Pasty.com came up as my home page this morning, I said WOW!! The master photographer catches the Master's work again! Thanks, Dan!

By MR, Oklahoma on Tuesday, September 16, 2003 - 10:16 am:

Absolutely awesome! We are planning a trip to the UP next summer. I can hardly wait!

By Chris & Tom, Chicago IL on Tuesday, September 16, 2003 - 11:41 am:

We are coming up there next week!! Y'all better keep up the wonderful weather and views. Haven't been there for 3 years now. Gad! Where are the good pasties that we can eat; I mean besides those from this site. Used to stop at Ishpeming for some good ones.

By Dan in Ca. on Tuesday, September 16, 2003 - 11:52 am:

Chris & Tom,
Sheldons Bakery in Houghton has wonderful pasties. They are across from Econo Foods. Great prune, raspberry, and apricot tarts too.

By just wonderin' on Tuesday, September 16, 2003 - 12:29 pm:

Another awesome shot from Dan. Thank you. On the subject of pasties: We were, as other people are, I'm sure, under the impression that the old folks at Stillwaters make the Stillwater pasties to give them some productivity in their lives as well as the income generated for the center. When we were up there this summer, we heard that the Stillwater pasties are made in BARONI'S kitchen!! What's the deal Charlie??

By Chris & Tom, Chgo, IL on Tuesday, September 16, 2003 - 12:38 pm:

I know the answer to that one, just wonderin'. The last time we visited Calumet we went to vist Stillwaters and Charlie and he told us that the feds got after the sweet operation and made them give it up. It has to be monitored by the FDA in an official capacity. I think the fed-pasties are not as good as the original-ones, but I do believe that some of the Stillwaters' folks are employed to still help.

By cml - Calumet, MI on Tuesday, September 16, 2003 - 01:10 pm:

Chris and Tom; Chicago, IL
Toni's Country Kitchen in Laurium, MI has some excellent tasting pasties/bakery. Don't forget Toivo and Eino's (really secret) Pasty Sauce.

By Charlie at Pasty Central on Tuesday, September 16, 2003 - 01:16 pm:

In regard to the USDA approval... It has been 4 years since we moved the baking to Baroni's building on 6th street. That's because their building was already USDA compliant. Before that, we used to bake them in the Still Waters kitchen.

It has cost Pasty Central over $70,000 during the past 4 years to comply with USDA regulations. But they gave us an ultimatum in 1999 to come into compliance or cease operation. They have also given such warnings to numerous other pasty kitchens around the U.P., because USDA approval is required by law for shipping or wholesaling pasties. As you may know, the other pasty kitchens in our region continue to openly ship and wholesale pasties WITHOUT USDA approval, and to-date the feds have done nothing about it, accept tell us it is our responsibility to file a complaint!

There was a discussion about this subject last October, when we suggested that if the USDA was not going to enforce the law consistently (or even ATTEMPT to enforce it), the industry should be de-regulated.

By Helen on Tuesday, September 16, 2003 - 01:26 pm:

Awesome picture you guys picked for today!! I love it. Not to be partial but I am from the Ontonagon area and I love the scenery around here, all year round!! The best pasties I have ever had are from Krups, in Twin Lakes!! They are made from scratch. Between Ontonagon and Houghton on M-26. Pat's Foods (Festival Foods in Houghton) also makes a pretty good pasty.

By Frank, Milw... on Tuesday, September 16, 2003 - 01:29 pm:

Is the Michigan House in Calumet still open and serving food? Thanks!

By Chris & Tom, Chgo, IL on Tuesday, September 16, 2003 - 01:35 pm:

Thanks for all the pasty-place referrals. We should be able to eat at a different one each day. YUM! Go U.P.!

By just wonderin' on Tuesday, September 16, 2003 - 02:17 pm:

Thanks for answering the question, Chris, Tom and Charlie. Happy pasty-eatin'!

By CA on Tuesday, September 16, 2003 - 02:26 pm:

Yep, the Michigan House is still open and serving food. Often to the tune of live music.

By Joe Finn, Rhinelander, Wi on Tuesday, September 16, 2003 - 02:51 pm:

Two weekends ago I had a pasty from Krup's in Twin Lakes. I thought it was terrible. The best pastys are from Randall's bakery in Wakefield.
This is why pasty ingredients and where to get the best, will always get you an argument in the U.P. Everybody's opinion is correct.

By BELO--LAKE LINDEN on Tuesday, September 16, 2003 - 02:59 pm:

I BELIEVE BARONI'S REPUTATION IS ONE OF THE BEST WITH ALL THERE PRODUCTS. ALSO VOLLWERTHS.WE SHOULD BE PROUD TO HAVE THEM IN OUR AREA & I THINK THEY COULD BECOME NATIONAL PRODUCERS WITH STOCK OPTIONS !!

By Leslie, Illinois on Tuesday, September 16, 2003 - 05:25 pm:

Every time we're up north I stock up on Baroni's to bring back home and Keweenaw Kitchen's jams -- especially the rhubarb!!

By Linda from Dowling on Tuesday, September 16, 2003 - 06:08 pm:

Wow, Wow, Wow...this picture nearly took my breath away. Thank you so much for sharing your talent with all of us...having this beautiful sight captured here on my computer, for a constant view, will help to brighten my spirits during one of our gloomy winter days.

God's majesty is truly evident in this array of colors.

By Nancy, East Lansing on Tuesday, September 16, 2003 - 06:22 pm:

Dan - you have outdone yourself - thanks!

By John-Canton on Tuesday, September 16, 2003 - 09:51 pm:

Dan, simply STUNNING! thanks

By Ray L on Tuesday, September 16, 2003 - 09:54 pm:

By Kate, CA on Tuesday, September 16, 2003 - 10:59 pm:

Toivo, your picture of the New Zealand ten dollar bill reminded me of something we don't ordinarily think about. The image in the left hand corner shows New Zealand superimposed over the earth. If you had a globe and turned it so that New Zealand was at the near top, you could see that NZ is actually in the center of the South Pacific. What can I say, small things amuse small minds!
Dan, what a glorious photo, thank you!

By Dave Whitten, Farmington Hills, MI on Wednesday, September 17, 2003 - 12:01 am:

One new but very, very good source of pasties is the Pasty Pub on 41 just in Kearsarge. I'd highly recommend it.

By Steve the Troll on Wednesday, September 17, 2003 - 08:34 am:

We ate at the Pasty Pub over the 4th and it was very good. I think it is the same people that own the Hut.

By Frank, St. Charles IL on Wednesday, September 17, 2003 - 09:06 am:

Frank/Milwaukee: If you go to Michigan House on a Saturday eve, your ears will be treated to one of the best pianists I've been blessed to hear. The young fellow's name is Clay Hilman and he is indeed a treat! He plays a wide range of music, and we were simply spellbound at his talent.

Call ahead to be sure of times, etc.

By Angela Rowe- Hubbell, Michigan on Wednesday, September 17, 2003 - 02:34 pm:

I love this pic- makes me remember why I love the UP. What a summer and late summer we have had. This is by far the best photo I have seen in a long time- magical

By Sarah, Central WI on Wednesday, September 17, 2003 - 05:02 pm:

Words can not describe how beautiful this picture is Dan. Will you be making this one available to buy in the future? We have pictures of the northern lights & a sunset over Lake Superior. I'd love to add this one to our collection! If anyone is ever in the Silver City area I highly recommend going to Dan's studio. This picture is definitely a WOW!

By Holly In MI on Thursday, September 18, 2003 - 01:38 pm:

To "SLEEPLESS IN MICHIGAN":

You asked: "Dan- what kind of touch-ups or enhancing was done to this, if any?"

If you put your arrow over the picture and left click on it a list will come up. Click on "properties" and it will give you the information of what he used to enhance this photo. This was particular photo was enhanced in PSP (Paint Shop Pro).

By danbury; germany on Thursday, September 18, 2003 - 04:19 pm:

So, that man with the great pics is pro? Great that he's giving some of these to pasty.cam ... usually I find something to say about every picture, but some speak best for themselves (enhanced or not).
Interesting, that thing about USDA and Stillwater pasties. sounds like some things are the same wherever you go - inconsistent law enforcement, e.g. And for regulation and deregulation - just be glad you're not in germany. If all regulations were followed to the point, I believe the whole country would break down in a minute.
Apropos wherever: how did a Yooper end up in estern germany? and where?

By JP, Ohio on Thursday, September 18, 2003 - 07:21 pm:

The absolute best pasties in the entire state of Michigan are from Gramma T's in Naguanee. Case closed!

By Lisa, farfrom home in TN on Friday, September 19, 2003 - 02:05 pm:

I am sorry but the best pasties in the U.P cannot be bought anywhere, my mom makes em ;)
Hmmm.. but maybe if I paid her I would get some when we come home in October!
Any word if they still have Octberfest in the U.P anymore?

By Martha L. on Saturday, September 20, 2003 - 12:44 pm:

Lisa, Far from Home - Copper Harbor has an annual Octoberfest. I'm not exactly sure of the dates, but that information might be on the copperharbor.com web site.

Great picture as usual! Thanks Dan and Charlie!
