She's a beauty, eh? BTW, anyone know what year the Grand Portal collapsed? Picture link?

By Bob Jewell from Farmington Hills on Monday, September 15, 2003 - 09:51 am:

It has collapsed several times. The last in Fall 1999-Spring 2000. See http://gennick.com/grand_portal_point.html

Toivo,

Care to comment on the following from today's MTU TechAlum newsletter?

"It'll be bigger than Hurricane Toivo slamming into the Mosquito Inn, but that's a story for another time."

Is our mild-mannered traveler not so mild-mannered? :)

By A displaced Trap Rockian on Monday, September 15, 2003 - 02:46 pm:

I'm bummed. The map doesn't show Trap Rock. It shows the start of the Valley Road and everything else. I guess my home birth place is right off the map now.

I finally broke down and purchased the large topo maps
that the visitor/info center in Calumet sells (right there
on 41). They're sold in quadrants, or sections; had to
buy about 8 of them to get the whole peninsula, but
they show everything. To keep them from getting
grundged up, I had them laminated at the Office Max in
Houghton. They've aided our own exploring and are
handy for anyone visiting us.

Displaced Trap Rockian - last month my husband and I tried to find Trap Rock Valley without any success. The map I had just did not show that kind of detail. The thing is, I knew where it should be, just not how to get there! Hope you have better luck.

If you're looking for detailed maps, I've used this site for topographic maps of the UP
http://topozone.com

Hey, Rose:

Thanks for the link to topozone. This looks very handy.

When I saw my photo of Pictured Rocks displayed here today, I was wishing how much I'd like to be back there right now. I'm sure that those of you who live in the U.P. know what a treasure it is to be surrounded by such natural beauty. I can't wait until I can visit again. In the meantime, this wonderful website gives me the U.P. fix I need everyday. Thanks!

Kate, this is Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore on the sourthern shore of Lake Superior. A beautiful place to camp, hike, and take pictures.

Wonderful picture, Cindy!!

Patricia:
Ah huh, I know where it should be too and know how to get there but for someone who doesn't the map wouldn't be any help. I lived there the first 18 years of my life and to go back there its rather depressing. All the fields that the early farmers cleared for planting have been left to grow in with trees. Gone are all the hay fields, potato fields and grain fields. Gone are all the farmers working in the fields on their tractors. Gone are all the cows grazing in the pastures. Its not the same anymore. Of course nothing is when you come to think of it. Everything changes.

By Ron Kentala, Michigan on Tuesday, September 16, 2003 - 05:47 am:

Bob Jewel, are you from Mohawk? If so, I went to school with you through the 6th grade.

By Mike K Equitorial Guinea/Laurium on Tuesday, September 16, 2003 - 08:32 am:

Patricia - head over to Lake Linden, turn right down Bootjack Rd. (one street before the main road turns left to go up the hill to Calumet/Laurium). Follow Bootjack Rd until you cross a bridge, turn on the first road to your left (just after the bridge) and you are there! The road weaves through Traprock Valley and rejoins U.S. 41 via Copper City. If you ever got to Gay through Lk. Linden, you've been in the valley without knowing it. Hope this helps. Only two more weeks and I'll be out of Africa and heading back to the UP :) after a short stop in Houston :( Hopefully there'll still be some salmon to tie into at McClains!

To Ron Kentala
