I hear that much of the U.S. is sweltering this summer. Not so here in the land of the midnight sun. The high today in Anchorage was 60 and the low was 58. Good flannel shirt weather. I hear they had a few thunder-boomers back home in da U.P. Thursday.

A simple handpainted wooden sign hanging above the old store front, with the the screen door flanked by a cool shady porch bench, along with summer's colorful beauties nestled in their worn oak barrels, and America's stars and stripes completing the perfect summer portrait of a sweet-faced little girl enjoying her ice cold refreshment, while sitting on the old cracked steps, with the warmth of the sun surrounding her. Can you imagine your own childhood?

As my uncle Paul would say, What A Doll. Hey, that's my granddaughter, no wonder.

Little sweetheart doesnt seem to have a care in the world beyond that cone. Makes a person wish they were eight or nine years old again. Life was simple. Lindell's in LL and the Cozy Garden in Laurium.

My husband's Aunt and Uncle (Clarence and Anne Bach) owned that store for many years. It holds a special spot in our hearts!

I just checked out the nominations for the 2004 calender.......It is becoming impossible to choose because they are all spectacular...now this super picture of "The Good Old Summertime" in the Copper Country....we need more months!!

Does anyone remember what the Ice Cream place was named in Florida Location on the left just before one went down the hill to Lake Linden? Was that the Cozy Garden?

I remember MANY times stopping there before going down the hill or over to Douglas Houghton falls...

This getting older is not what it's cracked up to be. At least the memories are still there...

Thank you so much for featuring my daughter on Pasty Cam! She's thrilled. (Of course, her older brother is not impressed). This picture was taken August 12. We were staying with friends in Houghton while my son attended hockey camp at MTU. Poor Jake got to spend 12 hours a day at camp while we got to go Copper Country cruising - making sure to stop for ice cream every chance we got.

Toivo, we got the pink yooper tennies at Walmart in Houghton. I'm not sure if they will have them in your size, though!

Rick- dont recall the name, but it wasnt the Cozy Garden. Cozy Garden was on corner of Hecla and Lake Linden Ave.

Ann and Clarence had the Eagle Harbor Store,,not the Eagle River Store.

"Uncle Otto" and "Aunt Mary" Sibilsky owned that store when I was a little boy and we kids ate a few ice cream cones on those steps. It was during the depression when ice cream cones were a huge luxury. Later,in 1946, Aunt Mary had the boy's dorm at Gitche Gumee built as a memorial to Unccle Otto. They were wonderful people.

Such a sweet picture. Even if I had Ice Cream in the house it wouldn't taste as good as that cone must've tasted!

Does anyone know how to go about to nominate a picture for the calendar. I found one in the gallery that I think should be submitted as a possible entry.

I believe the name of the ice cream parlor in Florida Location was Dairy Kreme in the 60's and 70's and later changed to Marijas before it went out of business. We used to stop there for gallons of root beer and chocolate dipped cones on our way down to Bootjack.

I have to agree, she is a little cutie, but seeing the name "Bach" reminds me of a fella I used to know named "Bert Bach". Now ole Bert he was quite the rockhound and was always on the lookout for new and interesting specimens. I'll never forget the day I found what I thought was a piece of rammelsbergite, so I took it over to Bert's place to have him check it out. Unfortunately he said it was just a rock. Yep, I'll never forget the day I gave Bert Bach a rock!

Nice to see that someone remembers the Cozy Garden. It was owned by my grandfather, James Galetto. They have both been gone for quite awhile and unfortunately the family does not have any good pictures of the outside of the Cozy Garden. If anyone has any pictures of it I would like to hear from you.

"Hilltop" Dairy Kreme? I thought it had something else besides Dairy Kreme.

Wow! That picture is absolutely precious! It captures the timeless essence of an ideal childhood memory. Even though it was taken this month it could have been taken in the 1930's. (well except for the cute pink shoes!)

Had my very first Banana Split at the Dairy Kreme thanks to a friend who felt sorry for me as I was a grownup by that time....Also had lots of ice cream at the Eagle River store as well as the Eagle Harbor General Store. Bill,CA(my favorite CC historian...I hadn't remembered the connection to your family...how about that!)

Great little place...Take my two boy's once a week for ice cream and skip stone or two down on the big lake.

The Eagle River Store has fresh, warm, crispy do-nuts every morning. At least they did when I was there in July. I'll check it out again next week.

I was already feeling blue that I can't be in Copper Country this Labor Day weekend - the first in MANY years....and missing my baby boy who's there for his final year at Tech. A family separated - Heartaches....

On the subject of ice cream....as a city-child visiting my grandmother in Lake Linden (many moons ago)....my parents took me to the old Spainish Shop" in Lake Linden and ordered a Tin-Roof....I thought it sounded awful!!!.....but it was wonderful!!......remembering the "old and "new" Spainish Shops in Lake Linden... a big part of the social scene for kids.....

....PS..old and new "Spanish" (sp) Shops...anyhow, we sure had a lot of fun at the "new Span" when I became a Yooper at LLHS. It was like a club for teens. We had a juke box and dancing in the back room. Lionel & Maurice Asselin were the owners.

Having spent every summer of my childhood in Eagle River, I remember many an icecream cone devoured at the E.R. Store: 5 cents/big scoop!!! Also Mrs. Yogi (sp?) who operated the store part of that time would organize a July 4th small-town parade; and afterward, to our great anticipation, she'd let the paraders into the store for a treat of free candy. Lots of happy memories in that old store; thanks for the reminder.

Lois - Her name was Edith Yoki, and we bought her home when she passed away in 1988. Among the items left in the attic was a big banner which was used in the parade which said "ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN IN THE KEWEENAW - EVEN CHRISTMAS IN JULY"
