Toivo, near the end of a looong road on Thursday, August 28, 2003 - 12:36 am:

I can hardly believe how many amazing photos keep popping up in the Guest Gallery. Karen Karl has a short set she calls Images of the Keweenaw, including today's vertical panorama.

Meanwhile in Alaska I've seen some highways which make the Seney Stretch seem like a single baby step. From what I've heard, a lot of Michigan Tech and NMU Alumni are familiar with our northern-most state. Guess most of them are familiar with the Seney Stretch, too. Don't know how I got sidetracked on that subject.

Hey! Did you notice pasty orders are flowing again? Check out the September delivery schedule for the details. Yumm!

By dlp - Painesdale on Thursday, August 28, 2003 - 08:11 am:

What a beautiful picture! I would love to have it framed to hang in my office as a constant reminder of why I struggle with the cold and snow just to live happily ever after in God's Country.
Thanks for sharing such a wonderful scene.

The streets are paved in gold......and only in the best little spot on earth....the waterways are, too!

By Ed Colangelo, New Jersey on Thursday, August 28, 2003 - 09:32 am:

This picture should be framed and hung in the Art Museums. It is awe inspiring and soul lifting!

By brainofj jason on Thursday, August 28, 2003 - 10:34 am:

that's a gorgeous photo, karen. i love the color, the darkness, and the smoothness of the reflection off the lake. the ships there make it so much more... they give it such a feeling of serenity... almost like passing whales. it's so calm and peaceful. very nice indeed. the pesky lens flare is the only blemish... but it's hardly noticable. good job. :)

By JoAnne, Port Orchard, WA on Thursday, August 28, 2003 - 10:44 am:

By Missin the UP from NJ on Thursday, August 28, 2003 - 02:06 pm:

I'll say WOW! This shot seems to have something other worldly going on. So-so beautiful! I can't wait to see Karen's album either.

Toivo, funny you should mention the Seney Stretch. Several years ago on one of our trips back to the UP we had a flat tire on our trailer just around the east end of the Stretch (there's a long story there, but...) Anyway, once we got to the farm and began seeing friends and relatives and telling them the whole story, they all (every last one of them) would nod their head and say, "Awwww, the Seney Stretch". I hadn't heard of it before, so I found it very funny they all said the same thing and in the same knowing way! So, does anyone have a shot of the Seney Stretch? (just kidding!) That is one long stretch of STRAIGHT road!

By Jim Copper Country on Thursday, August 28, 2003 - 03:47 pm:

Somehow the "Seney Stretch" has come into discussion today.....the wellknown 25 miles (actually 24.6) of M28 across the Seney Swamp between Seney and Shingleton, arrow straight and pancake flat.....does anyone remember when the State Highway Dept used to have a 5 mile "odometer check" section posted and marked off out near the middle of this stretch? I recall many trips North in the 1950s and early 1960s....and this Seney Swamp "highlight" (?) was always eagerly watched for....along with things like the Mystery Spot site, Seashell City and its maneating clam, etc.

Quite a few years ago, I inquired of the current DOT as to why this Seney Swamp "highlight" was no longer there...and received a sort of nonsense, lame reply. Maybe the time has come to remind the DOT that lots (?) of us miss this, and to urge them to put signs back along M28 .... there's certainly no obstacle like congestion, vision distances, etc!!

A question for Jim Copper Country:
I'm cudgeling my brains trying to remember where the Silver Lake Express tourist trap was along 2 between St. Ignace & Naubinway. Anyone remember it? I think it involved concrete dinosaurs along with a great little train ride.

Great photo, of course, and this is (apologies) off topic a bit.

By Cindy, St. Clair Shores on Thursday, August 28, 2003 - 04:26 pm:

Karen, what a gorgeous picture! I'm curious as to where you were when you took this picture? I also enjoyed your album . . . beautiful.

By Steve in VA on Thursday, August 28, 2003 - 04:59 pm:

The photo looks like it could have been shot from the top of Brockway Mountain outside Copper Harbor.

As for things to look forward to besides the Seney stretch when travelling through the UP, I always look forward to that sign advertising "Smoked Fish Jerky Fudge" outside of St. Ignace on Route 2. Never had the nerve to stop and try any, though...

By Paul in Illinois on Thursday, August 28, 2003 - 05:33 pm:

Super picture, Keren!

By Karen, MI on Thursday, August 28, 2003 - 05:52 pm:

Cindy from St. Clair Shores asked where the picture was taken....Steve in VA is correct. I took this shot from the top of Brockway Mountain.
Thanks for the compliments :)

Re: Seney Stretch. How nice that there is a discusion about it. Have traveled on this road many, many times. Was through there in May/June and will be going thru a week from tomorrow. In addition, we have a 8 year old dog that is a beagle/hound mix and her name is Seney, named after the town/highway. And you should see Seney stretch as she has long legs. People always look oddly at us when in the UP and we call her. They ask if she is the same name as Seney Mi/stretch/wildlife refuge. Also, about the Silver Lake Express, it was west of St.Ignace, perhaps five miles or so (give to take). Remember taking the train years and years ago. But like everything else the attraction wore off. And one last thing, I am curious as to what happened to the Poor Boy restaurant on US2 near the M77/Blaney Park turn off. Noticed it has new owners/name when up in the spring. The Poor Boy had good breakfasts.

By Steve the Troll on Thursday, August 28, 2003 - 08:17 pm:

They had the Seney check off from 64 thru 69 because I passed it about 60 times in five years of Da Tech.

By SharonS on Thursday, August 28, 2003 - 09:03 pm:

I understood they took down the odometer check sticks because the speed limit was 55 and they thought too many people were going over the speed limit (60) to check their odometers...what a laugh...as anybody who's been along there recently knows!

By Steve on Thursday, August 28, 2003 - 11:10 pm:

We either went exactly 60 MPH, 90 MPH or once 120 MPH depending on vehicle and time of day and tolerance for UP justice......Engineers can be a lonely lot..........I am flying up Saturday in a small plane capable of just over 180 MPH............mmmmmmmm.......idea cooking...
