Toivo, lookin for yoopers in AK on Tuesday, August 26, 2003 - 03:48 am:

Sometime today it looks like the Pasty Cam guest gallery may hit 3,000 photos. Lots of great vacation stuff, including some new shots like this from Nancy Williams.

If you're a newcomer to Pasty Central, let me welcome you to these daily pages, where I'm your regular weekday editor (Charlie the webmaster handles the weekends). In the archives you may have discovered my North American road trip which started last spring, and which is nearing the end. Everywhere I go I find folks who have a connection to Michigan's Upper Peninsula, even up here near Cordova, AK. Notice they have a "Crystal Falls" up here, too.

The plan now is to sell my wheels, affectionately known as "the old beater", and buy a ticket to Hawaii, just as soon as I can make it to Anchorage.

Looks like a typical Keweenaw house.

That is a beautiful area small town too. I was in Cordova and Valdez during the Exxon Valdez oil spill. This weekend the wife and I are going to her families home in Cheboygan to do the Labor day bridge walk.A 16 hour drive from Va.but worth it!

I spent some time in the interior and outer boundries of Alaska. I even spent some time in Hoonah.I was blessed to go on a mission trip, worked on A Christian shortwave broadcast station.
Was there about a month and a half.
Alot of the homes there look similar to those in the U.P.
You would be surprised of how many people from Michigan are living there in Alaska!
Have a blessed day Charlie.
P.S. If you ever need some pics of wildlife or some of the more interior parts of the land let me know.

Good job on the slide show from yesterday Tricia! It included all of my favorite spots! Thanks for sharing!

My hubby would be up there with his gasoline POWERED leaf blower! I prefer the sounds of the woods and the broom and the general peace.

Toivo, do you have any pictures to send us?
It's a shame you have to sell the old "beater". Continued good luck in your travels.

Sandy UP,
I didn't get a chance to get back to Pasty.com at all yesterday. I just saw your post this afternoon. Thanks for the info regarding the cell phone companies.

Hey Toivo!
Thanks for posting a map of your travels in Alaska! I hope you are collecting some pictures to share with us too... Alaska is an amazing place... so big and so unspoiled... everywhere you look is another spectacular view. If anyone is curious about where Toivo is and what he is seeing, you can see several pictures from near Denali and Palmer, Alaska in my gallery. Palmer is on the road that goes northeast from Anchorage. Denali is right about in the middle. It looks like Toivo went right throught both places... So Toivo hows da fishin'??? The Silver's should be runnin'...

He's a former Tech student, Julie is from Dollar Bay. Also, Liz and Peter Bisieot. Liz is the lady who sculpted "the Miner" in Franklin Square. Peter used to be Dean of the Business Dept at Tech. Lots of yooper connections up dere!!

Summer has gone too fast. Hope to take a trip back home in the fall. Seeing this photo brings back good memories about living in the UP.

For eyes wide shut:

The town of Ester is 8 miles from Fairbanks
and UAF, so roughly 360 miles from
Anchorage.
