<singing>"On the road again" - - - Took me awhile to find a place to connect out here in B.C. Glad to log on and find a new guest album by Jason Cooper, who reminds us that the Calumet Copper Kings are hockey state champs in Michigan. In today's vacation glimpse of life in the U.P. we find Josh and Jacob browsing the sands somewhere along Superior. I'll wager it's a spot somewhere on the eastern Keweenaw shore.

Good night from out west, and good morning from da U.P.

By J, mi on Wednesday, August 13, 2003 - 08:51 am:

I am so very familiar with this area. It is a favorite of mine since I too have property there. In such a beautiful area I still wonder why some property owners think it is acceptable to "litter" the beach with logs going from their camp to the water (trying to keep 4 wheelers away), while their neighbor actually plants trees, flowers and shrubs on the beach in an effort to also keep 4 wheelers away. Is there really an overabundance of ORV's on this beach? On what one would consider to be the busiest day of the summer (4th of July) I did not see one! The bottom line here is that all this junk on the beach just takes away from the natural beauty of the area. Also, to have a satellite dish on the beach is absurd. Sorry to start the day off on a sour note but this is reality. Other than that, looks like another beautiful day in the Copper Country.

By David S. - FL. on Wednesday, August 13, 2003 - 10:42 am:

To J,
I can understand your point to keep the U.P. beaches and area as natural as possible, but the sad fact is that a lot of people, especially youngsters, simply don't resect others. Their idea of fun is to tear up and down the beaches and waters on the latest, most powerful toys currently available on the market, hence, the logs to obstruct the problem. I'd love to be able to turn the "attitude clock" back to the 1950's, but unfortunately this is our new world.

By Dave Cloutier - Colorado on Wednesday, August 13, 2003 - 11:21 am:

There was a comment posted yesterday regarding the number of recent photographs showing people rather than the unspoiled beauty of the UP. I certainly enjoy seeing photographs showing the natural beauty of the UP on this site, but what really makes this site special is the effort by all the people who keep it going every day and the individual contributions by those who frequent this posting area. For example, the posting above that is trying to help a daughter meet people who knew her father. It is that sort of kindness - people pulling together to help other people - that to me makes the UP and this site so special. Seeing an occasional photograph featuring some of those people is fine with me... Keep up the good work!

By Rich S, SW Mich on Wednesday, August 13, 2003 - 12:11 pm:

To Dave Cloutier - Colorado:

I agree with your statement. I enjoy all the photos posted here on the site. I'm able see all the natural beauty of the region as well "meet" people I may never meet.

By Marsha, Genesee and Aura on Wednesday, August 13, 2003 - 12:28 pm:

We'll be up to our cottage on Keweenaw Bay in Aura (north of L'anse) tomorrow. Since we're always on the road seeing the sights, we eat out at least once every day. Any suggestions on clean restaurants with good food? We need to try some new places! We always take trips from Aura to Houghton & at least partway up the Keweenaw Peninsula.

By Sandy UP on Wednesday, August 13, 2003 - 01:02 pm:

Marsha, Genesee and Aura...The Hut just above Calumet is great as is Slims in Mohawk. If you get to Copper Harbor The Pines also offer super food and a great atmosphere. There's also a very nice clean restaurant with a great view of the lake in Eagle Harbor. I think it's the Eagle Harbor Inn, but I won't swear to it.

By bj-milford on Wednesday, August 13, 2003 - 01:28 pm:

We always stop in at The Loading Zone II in Lake Linden. Friday night special...Salmon dinner for $8.00....can't beat that. Pizzas are good, too.

By gwg on Wednesday, August 13, 2003 - 01:41 pm:

Ambassador in Houghton- great food, reasonable prices and a very comfortable atmosphere.
(also have a fish bowl)

By Connie - Colorado on Wednesday, August 13, 2003 - 01:55 pm:

The "BASS" (Ambassador) is my personal favorite. Their subs and pizzas are awesome. They cut them into square pieces for the unique dining experience. Also, this place looks like a real dive but they have a great atmosphere and good food - The Soumi Restaurant. I think it's on Huron street or near the bank. A very nice place to have lunch! The Kaleva is nice (in Hancock) but sometimes hard to find a place to sit at lunch time.

By Steve, Il. on Wednesday, August 13, 2003 - 02:04 pm:

Breakfast: Toni's-Laurium, Suomi-Houghton.
Eagle Harbor Inn-Eagle Harbor for excellent ribs.
Ambassador-Houghton as above. Library-Houghton, Loading Zone II-Lake Linden, Quincy's for Deep Dish Pizza, Mariner North-Copper Harbor for onion rings & burgers, etc. Eagle River Inn for the view & sophisticated food.

For the most delicious spaghetti in the Copper Country, be sure to stop in at Gemignani's Restaurant in Hancock, another longtime supporter of this website.

By the way, the Copper Country has been especially hard-hit by the "Blaster Worm" making the rounds to XP computers. We have had many calls at Pasty.NET, even from customers of other services, for a fix which we have assembled to remove this menace, which actually causes your computer to shut down. Here is a summary of instructions from the Pasty.NET website:

1) Download and run this security patch from Microsoft. Click Here for the file. Save it or run it immediately.

2) Turn off (disable) "System Restore" by right-clicking the icon labeled "My Computer" on your desktop, choose Properties, then on the "System Restore" tab check the box to "Turn off System Restore".

3) Download and run the fix program from Symantec. Click Here for the file. Save it or run it immediately.

4) When the program is finished it will give you a summary of the results.

Also, these programs are available on diskette for you to pick-up in Calumet or Hancock. Call our support line for details. 337-0569.

By Mary from Lake Linden on Wednesday, August 13, 2003 - 04:21 pm:

In Lake Linden you can eat at the Loading Zone II and no matter what you order it is great. Also the owners and help are wonderful. Try Lindell's Chocolate Shoppe and have a great breakfast or Friday, Fish Fry. Their specials are good also. The Lakes Dairyland has not only Ice Cream (Yum Yum) but dinners too. The help is young so you may have to wait! But whats the rush, your on vacation. RIGHT! There is a new "Last Drop Coffee Shop" in Hubbell and it fabulous. Doughnuts, Coffee, Pop, Ice Cream, Home made soup each day different and Cappachino, Flavored coffee, and Pizza. There is even a small grocery store in there with all of your desires. CLEAN, CLEAN AND CLEAN. IT IS SPECIAL. HOME TOWN ATMOSPHERE. STOP IN. You can't go wrong at Toni's in Laurium..Fantastic!

By Jason Cooper on Wednesday, August 13, 2003 - 04:44 pm:

To J,
My family is the ones who "litter" the beach with logs from the camp to the water. We only do it for the safety of our family. The ORV's race through there at lightning fast speeds, while my little brothers are scared to go out on our own property. I agree with you that it is such a pretty and prestine area, but it is not pretty when you are sitting on the beach and you have to listen to the sound of disrespectful people driving by, kicking sand at you. Now not everyone who owns an ATV is disrectful, but if you let one person through, you must let them all. The beach in Big Traverse is our front yard, we own to the waters edge, If I was to come race around and do donuts in your front yard you would have the Houghton County Sheriffs called in a heartbeat. If you want to ride your ATV you can go to the Gay Sands and ride all you want, but not in our front yard! Thanks

The Cozy Corner in South Range has a great menu for lunch and dinner. The prices are just right too. It is clean and the parking is great!!!

What happened to Ginos in Hancock? I didn't see it mentioned by anyone and it used to be an excellent restaurant, however I haen't been there in about five or six years.

By Janie, Ia. on Wednesday, August 13, 2003 - 05:39 pm:

J: I understand where you are coming from....sometimes one has to get"ugly" to keep what is their's "beautiful" We own snowmobiles and we go through our yard, but, considerate enough not to destroy it, where other's feel they have to tear through it. Until we fenced it up, we had a school bus doing u-turns and using a part of our yard in manuvering his u-turn.

By Janie, Ia. on Wednesday, August 13, 2003 - 05:42 pm:

I'm sorry J, I mean't to address the last statement to Jason, again very sorry!!!
Please accept my apology!!

By J, MI on Wednesday, August 13, 2003 - 05:56 pm:

Whoa Jason. I spend a lot of time in Big Traverse and know you are totally exaggerating about the ORVs on the beach. You might see one or two and they are never going by at lightening speeds nor are they disrespectful. I am laughing here at your imagination! I have no desire to argue here on this nice website so I will stop now because I can see you have your mind set. Basically Traverse is quiet with a few ORVs once in a while. I just hope you don't run into a law suit when some unsuspecting person accidentally hits your beach logs. The end. (thanks Charlie for letting me state my opinion)

By JP on Wednesday, August 13, 2003 - 06:17 pm:

I AM RESPONDING TO THE LETTER FROM JASON IN REGARDS TO ALL OF THE 4 WHEELERS ON BIG TRAVERSE BEACH. I AM ONE OF THESE 4 WHEELER OWNERS THAT USES THE BEACH FOR A NICE DRIVE. I AM ALSO AT THIS BEACH EVERY WEEKEND PLUS A FEW DAYS EACH WEEK DURING THE SUMMER. I, AS OF THIS DATE, AM STILL WAITING TO SEE ANOTHER 4 WHEELER ON THIS BEACH WHILE I AM THERE. I DRIVE AROUND 5 MILES PER HOUR WHEN I AM NEAR THE CAMPS AND AS CLOSE TO THE WATER AS I CAN GET. SO TELL ME JASON WHEN DO THESE FAST ATV RIDERS SHOW UP? BECAUSE MOST PEOPLE THAT RIDE 4 WHEELERS ONLY HAVE TIME TO DO SO ON THE WEEKENDS. BY THE WAY, I HAVE ASKED MY ATTORNEY FRIEND IN REGARDS TO HOW FAR A PERSON OWNS ON THE WATER. IT IS TO THE HIGH POINT OF THE LAND AND NOT TO THE WATERS EDGE. I AM NOT TRYING TO BE RUDE JASON, BUT DON'T EXAGGERATE THE FACTS AND LET US ALL TOLERATE A LITTLE. THERE'S ENOUGH HATE IN THE WORLD.

By Marsha, Genesee and Aura on Wednesday, August 13, 2003 - 07:31 pm:

I'd rather talk about food! Thanks for all your ideas!

By L,, MI on Wednesday, August 13, 2003 - 07:52 pm:

More comments on Big Traverse and the perceived 4-wheeler problem. Jason, my young friend, you do not own that land, and neither do your parents. You aren't old enough to know that the beach has grown over the years due to the stampstand washing from the Gay Sands. It is actually owned by the state because it is unplatted land. So, don't be too hasty in stating ownership. And I agree with the others, there has never been a 4-wheeler problem. We have no problem letting them go by. We wave a friendly hello. Try it. The much bigger problem in this area and many in the U.P.is the lack of zoning. I live in an area that would never ever tolerate the junk that litters the beach at Big Traverse including obsolete satellite dish's and construction equipment. I could cry seeing how sloppy home owners can be in such a beautiful area. Sorry this came up on this great site, but I thought I'd take this opportunity to educate Jason.

By rjn, mi on Wednesday, August 13, 2003 - 09:02 pm:

Technically, I believe it is the United States Government that owns Lake Superior shoreline to the high water mark, whatever that is...Try building a deck down near the water, or install stairs from a bluff, and the Army Corps of Engineers will appear and close that down in a heartbeat. People who buy "waterfront" need to understand that for the most part they bought "waterview". The shoreline belongs to everyone. I am no fan of 4 wheelers unless the driver is handicapped, and cannot walk the waters edge...but people who put up barriers should get a legal opinion as to where the "high water line" is on their property. I suspect it is much higher than homeowners want to believe, the Lake levels are low right now. The laws, I understand, are different on State waterways, such as the shipping canal. I am not a lawyer, but I'd certainly consult one before I obstructed anything.

It is so wonderful to share in viewing the many varieties of photos submitted to this site. Each day I enjoy seeking "what's new" for the day. The beautiful scenery from home is inspiring. Even if I don't know the people, I still enjoy seeing the pictures of others' friends and loved ones. I figure they must be pretty important to the persons submitting them, plus, I always hope there will be someone I recognize.

Thank you to everyone who shares their photos with the rest of us (especially those of us who do not have the equipment or know-how to participate). Each photographer has their own special style, and it sure gives me lots of spectacular "backgrounds" to put on my computer at work. My co-workers frequently comment on the beauty of the pictures.

On another note, I was also wondering if Gino's is still in Hancock. What a great place. Their pizza was delicious. I recall their pizzas could even be purchased frozen at the grocery store.

By Jo Ann Hancock on Thursday, August 14, 2003 - 12:20 am:

yep, Gino's is still there....same great food and now you can go across the street to Shake's shakes and have a ice cream for dessert afterwards
yum yum.

I wonder if the RED GARTER is still open in Calumet. I remember at least one good dinner there.

Thanks, homesick yooper! I agree with you! One day I got on here and saw Julie Steven's daughter and her father! Julie was in my class K-12 so we grew up together whether we wanted to or not and it was great to see her child and rejoice in the resemblence! Plus, her dad and my dad knew each other so that brought back some great memories. Pasty.com is my connection to my youth, my home and my soul. It's the next best thing to living there! Every photo is a great one!

By tg, MI. on Saturday, August 16, 2003 - 02:04 pm:

Just got back in town, so only now read the comments re: ORV's, property ownership, etc., etc.We own property in the Gay Sands area, and it is correct that a person owns to the high water mark, it says so right in the deed. As was stated above, who knows where that mark is. We see an occasional ORV come by when we are on our property. None have ever been a problem, most stay near the water, many slow down when they see we are there. Most people understand and attempt to live by the Golden Rule. Once again, a little respect and communication would go a long way.

By Jason Cooper, Big Traverse Mich. on Sunday, August 17, 2003 - 02:04 am:

I have an article that was in the Detroit Free Press a few years back when Frank Kelley was the Attorney General for the State of Michigan. It reads, "If you own a chunk of Michigan's Great Lakes shoreline, it's legal for you to keep the public off of your beach, says start Attorney General Frank Kelley. In an opinion released Thursday, Kelley said lakefront property owners can prosecute persons as trespassers to the WATER'S EDGE. However, a shoreline property owner may not attempt to keep people from passing the property by water, Kelley said. Property owners have exclusive control over their beaches to the water's edge. But they do need state permission before dredging, or placing permanent structures on land between the high and lower water marks." This is where we get our information as well as from the Michigan State Police and the Houghton County Sherriff's Department. The way we are stopping four wheelers from ruining our front yard is perfectly legal. We do have logs from our camp to the water's edge, but they are not permanent in any way. Even if we were to make a permanent structure, the high water mark is only within 5 foot up the beach, it is not where the waves break at. During November storms waves have came over the house, across the road, and into the river. So are you trying to say that none of that property belongs to us since the "so called" high water mark goes into the river? I dont think so. We have contacted the Michiagn State Police and they said as well that we OWN and can PROSECUTE to the WATER'S EDGE. Not only does the article and the state police says that, our deed says LAND ON LAKE SUPERIOR 100 FOOT MORE OR LESS. To JP with the issue over the stamp sand washing in from Gay, I have seen it wash in more and more, I do know my facts, thank you very much. When World War II ended and everyone came back to the Copper Country, commercial fishing was big since the mines were shutting down. The wooden pier that was at the Coal Docks was disassembled and used as dock would for the fishermen. Since that pier was retaining the stamp sand, each storm it slowly worked its way towards Traverse until it finally reached the irons. Our deed clearly states LAND ON LAKE SUPERIOR, so if we do not own the stamp sand and the state does, then they better come haul all of it away, because we own to the waters edge. Although another point to ponder, if your beach was to suddenly wash away in a storm and move down the beach a mile, you could not go back and claim that sand, and neither can the state. It is if you lose frontage, tough, if you gain it, good for you. The only reason we have done this is for the safety of our family, my little brother's are scared to death to go out on that beach because of ATV's. People should not be scared to go on their own property because of this, it is just plain rediculous. Many of you may not see it during the short time you are in Traverse, I was there all summer but I seen alot of it, although our logs have slowed down the traffic alot this past summer. One day I was out swimming with my family and a group of ATV's came threw, almost ran over our towels, which had my eye glasses laying on them, cussed at us, telling us to get out of their way. For reasons like that, that is why our beach is blocked off. Maybe if more people showed respect, it wouldnt be this way. Most of the people who come to ride on the stamp sand beach is people from the southern end of Big Traverse who dont ride or want people riding on their beach. Last summer I dealt with a guy from the southern end of Big Traverse who will remain nameless, and he lived on the white sands near Louise Point, he didnt want any ATV's running on his beach because he didnt like the noise from them, and they were too close to the house, and also has his property posted with numerous private property signs. But yet he comes on our beach and rides? Something wrong with that picture! We never minded the machines going through here until they started getting rude and thats when we layed down the law. Next year we hope to have poles dug in the ground every 24 inches apart from the house to the "highwater mark" then a non permanent barrier to the waters edge. We also have PRIVATE PROPERTY signs on the beach to protect ourselves, if someone was to get hurt it will be alot harder for them to try to sue, because it is posted and they should not be there in the first place. I always thought Id want a four wheeler, but 90 percent of the places you go are private property. Everyone who buys a four wheeler that comes to the U.P. is arrogant and thinks they own the place, well I got news for you, it wont be happening on our beach. Thanks

By J, mi on Monday, August 18, 2003 - 11:55 am:

Jason, you are way out of line. You seem to have your homework done but the fact is, there is not a problem with ATVs on the beach in Traverse. I was out there all weekend and didn't see one so don't make it sound as if there are groups of them always traveling up and down the beach. I didn't see you on the beach all weekend so I just figured you were inside spending time on the computer and I see I was correct. I think it would be best if all would try to get along in this world. As far as I'm concerned this subject is closed. Life and summers are just too short to spend all this time arguing. Thank you.
