Donn de Yampert has several early morning shots of Crystal Falls in this week's Gallery spotlight. I hope others will follow Donn's lead and add your favorite shots from the area.

Rolled into Edmonton late Tuesday under clear skies. Still can't get used to the funny temps (sure doesn't feel like 20° to me!) Hope to visit the Olympic park down at Calgary on Wednesday.

Hey I remember stayin in a little motel just down the road from the courthouse in Crystal Falls. Comfortable bed, but what I remember most was the coffee. Sure could go for a cup right now. Wonder if they have any here down in the lobby - -
Later.

HK Corn County, From yesterday. You got it. We were home for Pioneer days. Got to drive in the parade in one of Adamini's cars. Lots of fun. Took a tour of the Vista too. Lots of memories. Hadn't been in there since I sold it 30 years ago. Did you ever work there?

I think we may have stayed at that motel with the delicious coffee last weekend, Toivo. We were in Crystal Falls for the U. P. Firemen's Tournament.Could hardly wait for morning to come to get that wonderful cup of coffee. We had a nice time in the lovely town of Crystal Falls, but that main street hill was tough going when walking. We also enjoyed at a little bar on the main street, a most delicious pizza! Best I've tasted in a longgg time!

Toivo just a small point of interest or understanding 28 degrees Celcious = 82 degrees farenheit. That always helps me keep things straight

Toivo,
I'm happy to see you on the road again and posting news of your travels. However, now I'm curious as to what you were doing when you were on your mini sabbatical back at home. Do tell.

Is Fob's restaurant still in Crystal Falls? They always served the greatest breakfast, and the staff was the nicest anywhere.

By Mike B, Pittsburgh, wishin I was still in the Yoop on Wednesday, July 30, 2003 - 11:45 am:

Oh yeah, Fobs is still there. Don't know what the folks around there would do if it were to close.

Got to get there early though as there is a line out the door around breakfast, lunch or dinner.

One of the best Friday night fish fries around, too.

By Lorelei, MI on Wednesday, July 30, 2003 - 12:12 pm:

The broasted chicken and potatoes at Fob's are the best ever!! Yum, now I have a craving!! Might have to take a trip that way over the weekend.

By TWiedrich IL on Wednesday, July 30, 2003 - 01:11 pm:

My family had breakfast at Fobs a few years ago on our way to the Keweenaw. We had seven people. The breakfast was great, we paid the bill and left. About twenty miles down the road we realized that we had inadvertantly also paid the bill of a table of 4 next to us (their tickets got stuck to ours). The breakfast was so inexpensive, we didn't even realize we had paid for them. Where else could you get breakfast for 11 people under $30!

I am moving to an old farm in Portage Township in August and need to have some woven wire fencing put up in the pasture and some horse stalls built in the barn. I am having trouble finding someone who does that kind of work and wondered if anybody could suggest an individual or firm that I could hire to do these jobs.

By HK Corn County, IA on Wednesday, July 30, 2003 - 06:15 pm:

Mike R. No I never worked there. I was by the Yooper Tourist trap earlier this month as I stopped by a friends house in Ishpeming. Got my picture taken standing by Big Gus. How is the mrs. I haven't talked to her in quite a while. Now you know.

Did Fobs used to be called Merton's Cafe? I remember eating wonderful chicken there in the 50's and 60's while on family outings.

By Jeff Carlson-illinois on Wednesday, July 30, 2003 - 10:18 pm:

Greta, No Merton's Cafe is in Iron River, actually "downtown" Iron River. Would you believe they actually re routed higway 2 to aviod going through downtown (all three blocks of it). That's your tax dollars at work folks. If Iron River's downtown wasn't dead before... It hasn't been called Merton's in years. My wife's Uncle used to hand paint road side signs for Merton's years ago. It was one on the things we looked for when driving up to Iron River to see her family. Now I wished I had stopped and thrown one of those signs in the trunk of my car.

By beth, down in troll land on Monday, August 4, 2003 - 11:03 pm:

i remember driving to bewabic state park a few years ago with a big group of campers. it was the first summer i was driving my stick shift ranger, and that big hill coming up into crystal falls scared the bejeses out of me. especially when some fudgie with ohio plates decided to stop in front of me, halfway up the hill. everyone laughed at me when we arrived at the park.

By JAA Crystal Falls, MI on Tuesday, August 5, 2003 - 11:51 pm:

WOW!!! Guess you really don't know what you have until you hear people talk about it. I've lived in Crystal Falls, all my life. Now raising my family here!! Would never leave for anything. I work at Ben Franklin. Don't know what the town would do without that store. Thanks to everyone who loves our town. U.P. Firemen's tourny was awesome!!

By MSC from Wisconsin on Friday, July 30, 2004 - 07:38 pm:

Was recently on a visit to my home town of Iron River. Chuckled...Mertin's Cafe...my very first job...(don't ask how long ago) waitressing....50 cents/pr hr (PLUS tips !) FOBS is still in CF. My grandfather & grt grandfather's were sheriff in Iron County - total of about 14 yrs for both. Lots of good memories in Iron County. Go home often, sister now works @ courthouse. Visit, but can't stay. NOT a Yooper tourist trap.... just good old fashioned hospitality and sunshine ! I'll be back soon !
