We often see the tram tracks on the hillside as we cross the bridge from Houghton to Hancock. But we had never seen it from above. Great shot, Jon.

You have shown a picture of a sunset at Sedar Bay. Could you please tell me, where is Sedar Bay? Thanks.

I know I am going to put my foot in my mouth here, and probably end up looking like a total idiot, but I don't see a road at the bottom of the hill there! Was this from when the bridge was being built, or are my eyes really THAT bad?

T. Bush, Royal Oak, MI, Sedar Bay is out side of Calumet by the Tamarack Waterworks and Calumet Waterworks road. Sedar Bay is in Keweenaw County and has a great agate collecting beach. It is mostly privately owned and I don't know if there is any public access to the beach but there a lot of really nice people who live out there.

You can't see the bottom of the hill in that shot, what you are looking at is the crest of the ridge before it drops down to the canal. So your eyes are fine.

THEY ALSO HAVE AN UNDERGROUND COPPER MINE TOUR WITH THE TRAM RIDE. JUST FOUND OUT ABOUT IT.IT'S GREAT ACCORDING TO OUR VISITORS ON THE 4 TH.

I would like to see a shot of going down Quincy Hill looking at Houghton in the distance. Whenever I am up there I am in total awe by the beautiful view but cannot capture it on my ordinary camera.

What ever happened to Toivo's Canadian trip west?

This scene is like a roller coaster ride. Too scary for me! Nice illusion!

I tried to find the entrance to Sedar Bay in May when I was there and there was no signage at the entrance. But I tried and tried to remember how we got in there a long time ago and I think we went in where there is a public outhouse type bathroom just off the road. All the rest of the roads have normal looking houses and camps and this one has a bathroom. Follow that road to the beach and let me know if it works!!! I am confident that this is the right way, but I can't guarantee it! Maybe someone else knows???

Connie from Colorado---That hill that the Tram goes down is very steep, but the Tram travels at a slow speed because it travels on what is called a "Cog Railroad". That line in the center of the gauge of the rail is actually teeth in a long gear. There's a gear with teeth that match it under the Tram. That way the Tram can climb the hill without slipping the wheels and can use the electric motor as a brake on the way down. Nice ride--worth the trip.

Thanks for the description of the cog railroad system. If this could cure my fear of heights, I'd be the happiest woman in the world!!! To actually participate on a ride like that, I would have to have your posting with me and try to reassure myself. About six tequila slammers before the ride wouldn't hurt either!! There's gotta be a better passenger somewhere out there in pastyland!!

Connie, We took the tour of the Mine and then rode the Tram last summer.We really enjoyed it all. I expected the Tram ride to be sort of scary but actually I felt safe and enjoyed it thoroughly.The scenery is beautiful. I am really glad I did it. the whole Mine visit is something you won't forget.

I took the tram ride with my sister and my dad a few years ago. It was a fun trip although a little noisey. That electric/hydraulic drive is very strong but loud. At the bottom of the hill you go on a John Deere wagon ride into the mine and see where the copper came from during civil war days. It's nice and cool in there, and very dark when the lights go out! Can't even see your hand behind your head. :>) (sorry.)

I've always thought that one of THE best scenes of the fall colors is looking towards the Houghton canal area as you come down Quincy Hill. It is a total sea of colors...

Toivo hasn't finished the 50 state tour yet. He still has Alaska and Hawaii to go, so until he gets there he can't print up his tee shirts. That would be cheating. I hope he does finish the trip, cause I'm in line right behind you to buy a tee shirt, we know you get the first one free.

Connie - you've got your own cog railroad there in Colorado. Head over to the Pike's Peak Cog Railroad. Nice ride up to the top but remember to bring a jacket. No matter how hot it is on the bottom, it'll be cool up top. Our cog RR in the Keweenaw is just a little sibling to that one. Give it a try, railroads of any sort are a great, relaxing way to travel, see the countryside and are disappearing way too fast.

Yes! I have heard about that cog system. I have been to the top of Pike's Peak a few times. This is a real challenge for anyone with fear of heights. I can stand on the earth and look at anything but in the moving vehicle, it's just tooooo scary! They also have a tour you can take at the Royal Gorge, but I will settle for standing on the bridge!
