Rick's view from high above shows the spot where the gang was posing, just to the left of Eagle River Inn, the long roof in the middle of his Skypixs photo.

By Virgil & Karen, Ohio on Tuesday, June 24, 2003 - 08:42 am:

Copper Country Carol, great to meet you, the hubby, Seney and Heidi, in Paradise on Whitefish Bay last week. Karen and I will be exploring your beautiful area for the first time when we return to the U.P. in July. Today's shots of the Eagle River area are very inticing. We are excited. Of course, we will be travelling with our greyhounds, Boheman & Glory. Any tips on pet friendly lodging and local day trips?

By Charlie at Pasty Central on Tuesday, June 24, 2003 - 09:26 am:

Greg,

Yes, that is a ship's hull just off the beach. We have explored around it many times. The tip of the bow sticks out of the water.

By JoAnne Stefanac, Washington state on Tuesday, June 24, 2003 - 10:23 am:

Charlie,

Any history on that ship? Name, date? Curious ... must have been a "wreck" of some kind, I'm sure.

Love these arial shots!

Aah the big lake they call Gitche Gumee never ceases to clutch the soul of the spectator. There is no other place to experience such splendor as the bucolic havens that occupy it's bravura shoreline indeed. One must step back in approbation each time he or she sets their eyes on the marvel that is the nucleus of our wonderland.

Any relation to Llewellan Moyle?

By Rivera on Tuesday, June 24, 2003 - 12:46 pm:

V&K in Ohio-The Bella Vista Motel in Copper Harbor (906-289-4213) allows dogs albeit for a slightly higher rate and is a nice place to stay indeed.

By Carole on Tuesday, June 24, 2003 - 12:56 pm:

Virgil and Karen (Boheman and Glory also)

Great to see that you are enjoying this website....when I first read your post I had to stop and reread again thinking someone else had a Seney and Heidi (silly me). Anyway, give Lissa at the Shoreline a call (906 289-4441). This is the place we stay at with the pets. Only four miles north of Eagle River and 15 miles south of Copper Harbor. And the scenery along the way is out of this world. We will be up there beginning Sept. 7th thru the 19th. Cannot wait. The two weeks we spent there the beginning of June was way two short.

Oops, I meant that Eagle Harbor is 8 miles north from Eagle River.

Hi Bon & Den, I'm looking at the aerial picture and can see your house & shop clearly. Oh how I'd love to be there again. The kids still talk about the times we spent there with you. What a slice of heaven you have there in ER. I loved sitting on that beach....times I'll never forget!

By Patricia, MI on Tuesday, June 24, 2003 - 02:41 pm:

Seven more weeks and I'll be sitting on that very same log looking out at the lake!

A bit 'off topic'...
We're leaving for the UP for our annual visit to the cousins this Friday. We wondering if there was anyone in the Houghton/Hancock area who does rag rug weaving, who wouldn't mind showing off their techniques/equipment to a Troll weaver.

Thanks!

Trolls- years ago I think there was someone from the bootjack-lake linden hubbell area that did those rugs. I believe it was a Codere. Maybe someone out there knows where to get in touch with them if they are still around.

By danbury, germany on Tuesday, June 24, 2003 - 03:54 pm:

And further off topic:
Last week I asked about the pronounciation of pasty. Mary, Karen P. Mn - hope you see the thanks I post herewith. Although I have no speakers, your advice helped - though after reading all the comments on that one, I think it best to simply turn up, order one and stand corrected when need be.
Thanks again
danbury

Trolls--A woman named Shirley (Ed) Hulkonen from Nisula, about 25 miles south of Houghton does rag rug weaving.

By Trolls...again on Tuesday, June 24, 2003 - 05:25 pm:

Does anyone know of a 'Chuck Lafore' in the Mohawk area? He was in the Marine Corp until 1960 or so. Must be around 63-66 years old.

Thanks for any help.

By Tammy Kangas Hilman on Tuesday, June 24, 2003 - 05:52 pm:

Patti, Thanks for submitting the picture of your girls and folks. What are the chances of getting a picture of you and your sister posted? I thought EM was your sister at first glance. Holy wah they look alike.

Karen & Virgil: In Copper Harbor the "King Copper Inn" allows your dog family members to share your room with you also.

Trolls-
A friend of mine sells a rag rug loom and an instruction book on-line at www.oldmadequilts.com. I have demonstrated the technique at her booth at quilt shows and completed 1 and a half rugs during a weekend show. They are fun and easy to do.

By Gordy Lee on Tuesday, June 24, 2003 - 10:55 pm:

Karen and Virgil - Rivera hit it right on the money once agane. The Bellavista in Copper Harbor provides great service indeed. Might want to try Vics Cabins in Kearsarge as well.

I have jumped or dove off the prow of that ship many times as a kid. Never saw it from the air, though. It used to be covered with sand then and the prow only stuck out. I, too, am interested in the name and date of the sinking or any other info that's available.
Joanne S/WA Do you have a cousin 'Mim' from Yellowjacket?

This came to my inbox today and I thought I would pass this info along.
JoAnne

Hello,
You don't know me, but a friend sent me a link to
the conversations at Pasty.com about a ships hull East
of Eagle River. The wreck you folks are talking about
is the "Peninsula", a 154 foot steam propeller vessel
built in 1849. She wrecked on November 15, 1854 after
breaking her propeller shaft and drifting ashore. No
lives were lost. Some seasons it is completely
buried, some times it's exposed. Much of her unique
engine is buried within the hull. There are several
individuals who are very familiar with the ship. I am
President of the Marquette Underwater Preserve, and VP
of the Marquette Maritime Museum, so I've known of
this vessel for years, although I've never actually
dove it. It lies within the Keweenaw Underwater
Preserve, and is protected from vandelism.
I hope this helps you guys; please feel free to pass
the word to your group. I couldn't get logged in, so
I cut and pasted your address.
