Cold and foggy day? No problem. I love our changeable weather, especially in the Spring. Fog makes for more interesting photos anyway. This photo is one of my most often visited places, the Lake Of The Clouds Escarpment. All the while I was there the scene kept changing by the minute. Wonderful!

Hey, I like that. In a little chamber under the roof, with the sun blazing, 95°F and more than 90% humidity, it looks even better.
By the way, as I see another great pic on this site - while I do not exactly know how Still Water is involved in this (and whose work I'm viewing), I hope they enjoy their part as much as I usually enjoy the result.

Today you are viewing the work of Dan Urbanski, a photographer from Silver City, Michigan, and a friend of Still Waters, the 'Home for the Aged' in Calumet where this project began.

Dan is one of many friends who have kept this site going over the past 7+ years. For about 5 1/2 of those years we have published at least one picture a day, mainly scenes from Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Besides the amateur and professional photographers who participate, we enjoy the support of a wonderful family of business sponsors, whose links you see on the home page of Pasty Central. Hundreds of families and individuals also support these effort as members of the PastyNET dial-in and wireless Internet service in the Copper Country, and a growing base of local dial users throughout the U.S. All of this is in addition to the online sales of some 175,000+ U.P. style pasties, which the residents of Still Waters participate in making.

The primary mission of Pasty Central/PastyNET is to provide much-needed support for Still Waters, especially in its work with low-income elderly. Along the way, additional employment has been generated locally to staff the pasty kitchen and Internet service. There are numerous behind-the-scenes challenges (regulation, changing technology, quality control) but I'm sure all our staff and volunteers agree: we thoroughly enjoy our part in this effort.

On a warm day in Eagle Harbor last week, a slight wind shift brought in the fog for about 2 hours.
It was beautiful!!! It was gone 90 minutes later as the wind shifted again....a brief UP moment that was a highlight of the trip.

Thanks Dan for the phenomenol shot. This pic reminded me of something I once heard. When the first explorers from Europe landed on the North American shore, there was such a primeval forest that it was said a squirrel could traverse the treetops from the Atlantic to the Mississippi. Seeing this shot, I can imagine what it must've been like. Beautiful!

Missin the UP from NJ. I went thru Norway Lake twice last weekend on my way to and from my camp North of Ralph. That is a picturesque spot, with the park, lake, and Sportsman's Paradise cabins. My 2 sons and some friends were fishing Gene's Pond and had a blast. If you ever get back there, be SURE to have breakfast at the Eclectic Belgium Cafe. Holly Wah. Doesn't get any better.

Gal in Kazoo, Go north to the bridge then west about 2 hrs to Esky for a pit stop, then proceed to go further west for 2-3 more hrs (est.) till you get to Ontanagon. Turn right to go north and there you will find the Porkies and Superior. And yes I would love to take you there. =)

I, too, recognized the shot's location at once, having visited it many times. I always used to scare my mom by walking as close to the edge as I dared. On my honeymoon, I finally climbed down to the lake, on a hot, sunny day. It was kinda eerie looking up at the escarpment. As we here in the Nation's Capital continue to endure endless days of rain, clouds and cool temps, the Pasty Cam helps me keep it all in perspective. Keep those shutters clicking, friends.

Fortunately when I am back in the UP for three whole weeks this summer enjoying my break from Los Angeles, I will be visiting ALL of the sappy tourist attractions and won't run into you - Jaydub. I love to visit the UP. I love to live in Los Angeles.

I've only done a little travelling, east to camp in the Adirondacks, west to Yellowstone a couple of times, and south to the Blue Ridge...but my heart always returns to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and that beloved Lake Superior. This site always allows a daily glimpse of my heart's desire. Thanks.

Martha K, I know how you feel about changing wallpaper or deciding on which one. I store over 1000 pics and 95% are Pasty Cam. I am looking into my pictures application to see if More than One pic can be displayed on screen. If anyone else already knows how...can you pass it along? I have CompuPic. Can't help you, Katherine D., but I was thinking that maybe Charlie and Jonathan, computer wizards that they are, should look into making some of our favorite Pasty-Cam shots into one of those screen savers that changes pictures. Another way to raise some funds for Still Waters, guys. Is it possible?

We were there on Sunday afternoon - the first time we were at Lake of the Clouds when it was shrouded by clouds. I was longing for our digital camera or my 35mm. Our first time at Lake of the Clouds was a hike-in for a weekend stay at the cabin when our girls were 5 & 3 - one of the more momentous times of our lives. Dan, as usual, captures the essence in a most elegant fashion. I've always thought that fog and light rain were the most spectacular times in the northwoods. They just come alive!

I just wish I had a bank or line of computers so I could have a different wallpaper on each one. I have one computer that doesn't work too well any longer, but it has a UP wallpaper on it! The other one changes with the beauty that comes up each week. The changing screen saver might be a great idea!

Thanks, Charlie. Looks like Ill've got to have a pasty (??oops, grammar?) when I come to the UP. Hope the project is around for a long time as this will most likely several years - maybe more than a decade.

For those who were asking yesterday about a screensaver program that will show different pictures, try www.webshots.com. It's a free download, then you can pick their photos or add your own to it. You can also customize which photos you want to display and for how long.

Missing the Yoop: thanks for the link to the Webshots site. Tried this out and it works pretty well. Can rotate through many favorite Pasty-Cam shots! Too bad I have to cover up the wallpaper with work!

missing the yoop, Martha, others--webshots is a neat screensaver program but it is what's called a "resource hog". After installing it, if you note your computer seems slow or balky, gives low memory warnings or locks up at times, you'll need to uninstall it.

Very nice. Love Lake of the Clouds and Porcupine Mountain. I am new to Pasty.NET. Are all the WOW's done with a digital camera?

You've done it again. We moved to Colorado from Wisconsin last year and we have one of your photos of Lake of the Clouds hanging in our home as a memory of our favorite times back there.
