This weekend in Eagle River there was a fire on the old dam at the falls (tune in tomorrow for some shots). For our Sunday Shoebox Memory I was thinking we had a picture back in the archives somewhere showing a baptismal service in Eagle River. However, a search on Google (site:pasty.com baptism) yielded this dramatic shot, sent to us several years ago by Dan Urbanski. Dan found this photo (incorrectly labeled as 1926) at the Trout Creek Museum. It's the Big Iron River, not Eagle River, and the structure above the bank is the old Greenwood Lumber Camp.

As I mentioned, we'll have more about the incident at Eagle River Dam tomorrow on the Pasty Cam.

There is no way that is a 1926 photo, as the car in the background is about a 1936-38. Before dating a photo, always look for autos, as they will give a more accurate date.

Yes, I know the photo is not 1926. That date was on the
back of the photo.

If you browse the Pastycam archives, you'll find quite a
few of my photos that are located at the Greenwoods
Falls. It's one of my favorite places, especially in high
water. I haven't seea a baptism there, though.

Certainly is sad news to hear about the fire. Hope no one was injured. Seems yesterday was a not so good day in many ways.. For me it was my trip to "the island" for Lilac Festival. It was a definite washout. Drove in dry but overcast weather from Howell only to hit Indian River area to find the beginings of rain and then in Mackinac City extreme fog & heavy rain so no trip to the island. Instead I "contributed" some $$'s to our Native American friends in St. Ignace. (grin)

I really enjoy the Shoebox memories. As someone who's been living away for so many years, these photos are a tiny window into my own sweet memories. (It's true that the unpleasant stuff fades and the nice things remain.) Trout Creek happens to be where much of my extended family lived, but, even when some of the shots are from areas I'm not familiar with, there's still that common thread running through. The forests, the streams and lakes, and the Big Lake. And the people.

That building is the old Power House, which happens to be the new home of the Smart Zone in Houghton, one of 3 such projects in the Copper Country. The Smart Zone is a business incubator, focusing on high-tech businesses which will hopefully create these types jobs in the Copper Country. There are several Smart Zones around the state, with the one in Houghton funded by a $2 million grant from Michigan Economic Development Corporation.

We tried finding a link to a recent Mining Gazette article about the Smart Zone, but it appears the Gazette website is down this evening. Maybe someone should suggest that they get in touch with PastyNET :o)

to David S.-Fla. I think I remember my dad mentioning the name Manning. I'm sorry to say that I don't have much more than a few names in my memory. I wish I had known to write things down while my dad was alive. But, I grew to love the TC area as that was where we went to grandma's house. Thanks for inquiring.
Would anyone have a picture of Norway lake. Loved that lake. Back when we went there, we usually had the beach to ourselves. What a sweet, luxurious, childhood memory.

How much was paid for the old power house next to the bridge from the owner ?? (Whose name shall remain unmentioned as it might get the thread pulled)...It was a ridiculous amount of taxpayer money spent on a building that couldn't be sold on the market for years !!! Geez, there's no parking whatsoever there, what kind of retrofitting is going to have to be done to the building (20 bucks sayz the former owner will get THAT contract), etc....To many fishey things. like Ventures.

Put away your $20, P, the retrofitting has already been done. And there is a good amount of parking around and near the building. There will probably be an open house soon, and maybe we can bring some pictures.

We hope the Smart Zone idea works, too. All parties involved - cities of Hancock and Houghton, Michigan Tech and MEDC - all desire to maximize the synergy of our area's resources, and attract new businesses and jobs to the area.

The Assembly of God church in Ontonagon still holds baptisms in the lake--I hope late enough in the season!
