Toivo, wishin I was fishin on Monday, June 2, 2003 - 12:26 am:

What a great time of year to be in the woods! Just seein these pictures makes me want to hustle on back to the Keweenaw, before black flies and mosquitos start whoopin it up.

Hope you had a good weekend. Congratulations to all the graduates who had open houses, and a few places with comencements. I hope to be out in the Canadian Rockies by the end of the week.
Good night from Ontario and good morning from da U.P. trip notes on

By Kathi, Ferndale on Monday, June 2, 2003 - 04:46 am:

Living in the Detroit area, and going to bingo quite frequently in Windsor, Ontario, I'm used to seeing the plain white license plates with the little blue crown in the center. I've never seen the one you have there, Toivo...I wonder if it's a new(er) pattern that I just haven't seen yet? Is it just me, or does that "thing" on the left look like a Star Trek communicator?

By Mike B, Pittsburgh, wishin I was still in the Yoop on Monday, June 2, 2003 - 07:15 am:

The time is getting close. July 3rd I will be back in my beloved U.P. for a week. Forest Park High School(Crystal Falls) Class of '83 20 year reunion. Can't wait to get out and see some of my old haunts and some old friends. Hopefully my trip will find time for a hike through some woods and down a few streams like this one.

I'm counting down the days :)

By Mike-Transplanted Yooper-Redford, Mi on Monday, June 2, 2003 - 07:17 am:

Just remember, a bad day of fishing is better than a good day at the office.

By D from Lake Linden, MI on Monday, June 2, 2003 - 08:22 am:

A scene right out of the movie, "the Natural" starring Robt.Redford and Brad Pitt. Cool, refreshing and quiet. I may not cast a line, but sit among the moss and enjoy the shady view before me.

By Marvin, Bumbletown on Monday, June 2, 2003 - 09:13 am:

The weather has been beautiful even though it has been alittle cool. We have enjoyed watching the flowers appear on the trees around the our house on Bumbletown Hill. We arived back home from Florida the beginning of May. Since then we have been very busy with the house but we always have time to enjoy our hill and its beauty. We are planning a fishing trip in the near future. Fishing is a perfect way to enjoy nature.

By Wunderin?? on Monday, June 2, 2003 - 09:39 am:

D from Lake Linden

Do you perchance mean "A River Runs Through It"?
Wasn't "The Natural" a Robert Redford baseball movie? A good one (both) if I recall. Course memory ain't what it used to be!

By transplant, Houghton on Monday, June 2, 2003 - 09:43 am:

Kathi,

If you go to the website:

http://www.acme.com/licensemaker/

you will see where Toivo comes up with his license plates. You are right it is a Trek symbol.

By Dawn, Oregon on Monday, June 2, 2003 - 10:17 am:

Toivo, I would highly recommend Niagara Falls. My husband and I have been there. The Canada side especially is beautiful. I also highly recommend a restaurant on the Canadian side that has a balcony overlooking the falls - don't remember the name of it (it's been nine years), but the food was wonderful.

By Eyes wide shut! on Monday, June 2, 2003 - 10:18 am:

Toivo,
I can understand the alure of Niagra Falls. But you sure must have the Wanderlust bad if you are considering crossing Ontario by way of the lp. Sault Ste. Marie with a side trip home to fish and sauna I could understand. Are you just trying to avoid Toronto and SARS? Or are you trying to extend the North American tour until snow flies?

By Alice, Ventura, CA on Monday, June 2, 2003 - 11:28 am:

Great pictures! You can almost feel, smell, taste, and hear the scene as well as see it. This is what makes this site so great...transporting us to another place, the UP, and time. Thanks.

By Missin the UP from NJ on Monday, June 2, 2003 - 12:30 pm:

So beautiful. So peaceful. And I think I CAN hear the water and woodsy sounds.
Thank you!

By Sturtz, MI on Monday, June 2, 2003 - 03:31 pm:

Is that J.P. Fishing

By Connie on Monday, June 2, 2003 - 04:00 pm:

Sturtz:
No, it's not J.P. This guy's hair is blonde! He actually hasn't been out fishin' too much. Tim called me and said to check it out. J.P. will get a kick out of it though, that you thought it was him!

By KP, Wisconsin on Monday, June 2, 2003 - 04:01 pm:

Does anyone know what the name of this stream is or its location?

By Victor P., Houston Tx on Monday, June 2, 2003 - 04:06 pm:

Am I the only one that sees the papus baby doll in the lower picture far lower right? Button eyes, bangs, smiling and arms over tummy under her wrap.

By Troll inE.H. on Monday, June 2, 2003 - 05:23 pm:

Rainbows are great sport,no doubt about it.How ever if I want to experience and taste the wilderness I go for the speckies."SALVELINUS FONTINALIS" Michigans native char....What gorgeous little beauties they are.

By Troll Diva on Monday, June 2, 2003 - 06:10 pm:

Kathy, I to am from Ferndale! Not that I am real proud of that. LOL. I also thought that it looked like a Star Trek communicator. hehehe.

By Patt, Mid-Michigan on Monday, June 2, 2003 - 06:27 pm:

Troll Diva & Kathy I too am/was from Ferndale. Have not lived there since 1970 but back then it was a fine town to be from. I have some great memories from those years (1952-1970). Every town has it's good and bad parts. It is the memories each one takes with us when we leave that matter the most.

By Ken from da UP on Monday, June 2, 2003 - 11:05 pm:

Hei, Toivo, like I said a few weeks ago, 'Are you going to Niagra and Port Huron and the LP?' But like someone else said, 'Why would you go to the LP if you didn't have to?' :>) 'Sup to you, man! Enjoy your trip. The mosquitos, etc. are out in force here in Cornell. The lilacs and apple blossoms really smell wondermous!! 'Course the Golden Dell Dwellers are also all over the place. (dandelions, :o).) Anyone remember the old "Fox and the Crow" comics?

By Marc, Tamarack City on Monday, June 2, 2003 - 11:28 pm:

Where was this picture taken??? It looks like a familier bit of stream but I can't place it. HELP!!

By the way, Toivo-how was Newfoundland?? Did you get to check out St. Johns, George St, the point or Cape Spear??

By Toivo from Toivola, traveling editor on Tuesday, June 3, 2003 - 03:51 am:

If you are looking for some confrontational comments which appeared on Monday's Pasty Cam, the entire thread of conversation has been moved to its own page.

Marc, Newfoundland had some rough weather. Sounds like you have spent a little time there yourself.

Maybe Brian Rendel could let us know where the fishing pictures were taken. As for me, I have to get a little sleep. Some days editing the Pasty Cam is more work than others.

By Mary Lou on Tuesday, June 3, 2003 - 07:41 am:

Here is an anti-mosquito idea sent to me recently.......Put a few drops of Lemon-Joy into a white plate with water....supposedly it draws lots of mosquitos who die shortly after sipping the stuff......apparently they are drawn to the white plate and lemon smell..........let me know if it works....no mosquitos here in Escanaba at my place...too much wind in the pm

By Brian Rendel, Hancock on Tuesday, June 3, 2003 - 08:19 am:

The location is a ways up the Elm River near Agate Beach. Pics were taken just as the buds were beginning to show a little green a few weeks ago.

By Karen P, MN on Tuesday, June 3, 2003 - 11:42 am:

Victor P, Houston, TX: What good eyes you have. I haven't figured out just what that really is, it almost looks like a furled umbrella with a long ferule. The image is similar to the portait of Sacajawea on the new golden coin. Look close, I can see the mothers head over the papoose.

By Troll Diva on Tuesday, June 3, 2003 - 01:11 pm:

Patt, Wow 3 from Ferndale on one page!! Pretty cool. Small world. Things have changed alot over the years yet it still is a nice city. Did you graduate from Ferndale High?

By Marc, Tamarack City on Tuesday, June 3, 2003 - 02:22 pm:

Toivo,
I spent about 7 months there a few years back. Beautiful, rugged place with nasty weather but I found it to be alot like the Keweenaw, even the people who were friendly and helpful. I've been all over this earth and it's the only place I would ever leave the Keweenaw for, If I had to, that is.

By Victor P., Houston Tx on Tuesday, June 3, 2003 - 07:51 pm:

Yes, the mothers head is righ there look in the rocks... I Love It.

Victor "Not born in Texas but I got here as quick as I could" (born in Lansing wishing to return to Ironwood.) Sombody please say hi to my Sis Cathy at the Ironwood Library for me.

By Banjo Eyes- Oregon on Monday, June 30, 2003 - 10:28 am:

Ah-h-h-h fishing!! I love it. I used to fish the Elm River in my childhood. Now I fish the Alsea River here in Oregon. Also float the river in a raft and fish the whole way..takes 9 hrs. to float from point to point. So peaceful, beautiful and relaxing. Being in nature and on the river is a spiritual experience, more fulfilling, fun and satisfying then even sex. And I LOVE both!!
