Escanaba River Sunrise    ...scroll down to share comments

Toivo, starting across the Provinces on Thursday, May 22, 2003 - 02:45 am:

I don't recall if Pasty Cam has ever had 2 'reflection' pictures in the same week. Paul Gerard's photo on Monday was a little farther west up U.S. 2 from today's shot by Donn de Yampert. This is a typical May sunrise on the Escanaba River, after a little light fog has burned away from the chill overnight.

After much debate and consideration I decided to keep the ole beater and tackle Canada. I never even knew where Nova Scotia was before. Not a bunch different from Maine, which reminded me a lot of Upper Michigan.

Somebody mentioned I should have driven through Mexico while I was there. In southern California I had been told it was a BAD idea to take a car into Mexico (insurance complications). But I'll let you in on a little secret: when I was near Yuma, Arizona I walked into Mexico for a while, just to say I had been there. Even bought a sarape for a souvenir. So it truly has become a North American tour. Can only imagine how many miles there are between me and Anchorage. So glad for Pasty Cam to stay in touch with HOME along the way.
Good night from Canada and good morning from da U.P. trip notes cns

Toivo, a stop in Quebec City would be well worth your time. The "old" city along the St Lawrence has beautiful scenery, history and good B&B's. I believe it's the oldest city in North America. (?)

By Mike Mehrman, MI on Thursday, May 22, 2003 - 09:03 am:

What the heck is going on with the lift bridge, must be making repairs this morning. The span is lowered and there's a big red crane like thing on the top section, reaching over the edge.

By Alex Tiensivu, Georgia on Thursday, May 22, 2003 - 09:44 am:

You know what's missing from that bridge? ME sitting at the control panel, FULL TIME!

By confused yooper on Thursday, May 22, 2003 - 10:12 am:

Alex, for someone who longs for the UP and all of it's amenities, what the heck are you in Georgia for anyway?

By Chris, IL on Thursday, May 22, 2003 - 11:08 am:

Good for you Toivo, Enjoy yourself, eh!

By Sherry in N FL on Thursday, May 22, 2003 - 11:37 am:

bj-milford
I believe the oldest city is St Augustine FL. Settled around 1540 by the spanish.

Hi Toivo-

I suggested TJ in Mexico, and you are right, it is a good idea to walk over. But you missed experiencing the Tijuana Taxi! haha. Yuma was a better choice since it is right on the border whereas San Diego isn't.

By Yooper JJ in GB, WI on Thursday, May 22, 2003 - 01:05 pm:

The river is about three miles from the folks up towards MEAD paper mill or closer to Boney Falls
but still a lovely place to be. There is actually an UPPCO camp ground we can stay at right on the resovior @ the falls.

Talk to you later from Yooper Jo!!
love YA!

Hey Toivo,

Your trip across Canada will be well worth the extra time and money, but you know, Toivo, you will have to make a lot of wood at the end of your journeys to buy some new tools to fix up the old burner,eh?

Good luck in your travels

By daughter of a Quebecois on Thursday, May 22, 2003 - 02:05 pm:

Let me recommend a little place in Quebec City called Aux Ancien Canadiens. It's a nifty little restuarant in a very, very old building. Eat the traditional French Canadian dishes. There are some waterfalls outside of the city too, can't recall all the details but they're there--out by Ste. Anne de Beaupre.
And on the way west, try Montebello, Quebec and the chateau there. My grandpa worked there. World's largest log structure and built very quickly. Once a private club for the rich folks and do go inside.

By bj-milford on Thursday, May 22, 2003 - 02:05 pm:

Sherry, You're right. Quebec City is 395 yrs young, having been settled in 1608.
Toivo, if you can't make it there, here is a web site with some good pictures....www.mestern.net/canada/quebec/drive/
Happy Travels

I too send good luck to Toivo in his travels. Toivo, you have given me and I'm sure many others so much joy and laughter with your impromptu trip. Thanks! You have a great sense of humor. You had my NJ born husband laughing with your Dragstrip discription of the NJ Turnpike (because it's so true!) And for a minute I thought your list of vehicle problems was from our list of breakdowns while traveling over the past 30 plus years to the UP and back to NJ! You are one courageous Toivo, to handle all those breakdowns in one trip and keep on going. Kinda like the Pioneers and their challenges. Thanks again.

By Missin the UP from NJ on Thursday, May 22, 2003 - 03:21 pm:

OH! Thanks again for the SPECTACULAR pictures. I think they're the best on the World Wide Web!!

By Jo Ann in Iowa on Thursday, May 22, 2003 - 06:25 pm:

Does Toivo really know where Nova Scotia is? How did he get there? Fly over New Brunswick? Or row the old beater there across the water from Maine?

By carole on Thursday, May 22, 2003 - 06:51 pm:

Oh Oh!!! Does Jo Ann in Iowa have 'something' on our roaming(?) Toivo???

By KH, MI on Thursday, May 22, 2003 - 07:03 pm:

I believe there is a car ferry that runs from Maine to Nova Scotia...

By Alex Tiensivu, Confused Georgian on Thursday, May 22, 2003 - 08:42 pm:

Dear Confused Yooper... I have NO idea! :) I have so many obligations here right now, but when the time is right, I'm outta here! Mohawk or the immediate area WILL have my family there one day, Lord willing!

By EM,MI on Thursday, May 22, 2003 - 09:29 pm:

Alex-there is still a little bit of the Laurium Glacier left for you.

By Wayne, Candler, NC on Thursday, May 22, 2003 - 09:44 pm:

Beautiful. Thanks Wayne in North Carolina.

By Ken from da UP on Thursday, May 22, 2003 - 10:45 pm:

I sailed aboard the USS NORTH AMERICAN during the 1959 season and we made two Seaway trips to Montreal. The St. Lawrence River is such a beautimous thing to see. The Welland Canal, the
Thousand Islands region, Beauharnois, etc.
Hei, Toivo, you got SISU! Almost envy you this trip. Keep it on the slab and watch out for those Moose! Meece? Mooses? :>) :o)

By Ken from da UP on Thursday, May 22, 2003 - 10:49 pm:

Hei, Donn, ain't that purty? Kiitos! I took some pix of Boney Falls, but they're still on the CD.

By Troll with connections, Taylor Mi on Friday, May 23, 2003 - 12:00 am:

Well,I'm headed up to the Copper Country this Sarurday. How are the mosquitoes so far? What's that joke? The best selling perfumes in the U.P. during the summer contain DEET.
Can't wait to get back there.

By Alex on Friday, May 23, 2003 - 12:49 am:

Thanks, EM-MI... I'll be right up! (I needed an excuse!) :)

By Marc, permanently on the beach in Tamarack City on Friday, May 23, 2003 - 03:00 pm:

They have been doing a bit of work on the bridge lately, with a cherry-picker, but I think they are finished. My 2 yr old daughter and I were just fishing under the bridge this morning and nobody was there except for a few pigeons and us two:)

By Mike Mehrman, MI. on Saturday, May 24, 2003 - 09:31 am:

Marc, Thanks for the bridge update, how were the fish biting?

By Marc, T.C. on Saturday, May 24, 2003 - 01:56 pm:

Mike,
Not at all!! So far I've had no luck on the Huron River, Torch Lake or the Portage. Moving on to other spots next week...
