Missin' home. More later.

By ICU81B4I81 on Thursday, May 15, 2003 - 07:06 am:

Wonder if that old car parked across the raging river just behind the white birch was swept away later in the day? It looks like a 1930's vintage. Anyone know who owns that car?

By Cory, IL on Thursday, May 15, 2003 - 07:47 am:

Minimalist Toivo. I hope everything is alright...

By Uncle Bud/old Mohawk guy on Thursday, May 15, 2003 - 08:13 am:

The car looks like a "yukadee" to me.
probably some 'bosch' bottles in the back EH.

By Molly Houghton, MI on Thursday, May 15, 2003 - 08:36 am:

We took a ride to look at the Eagle River falls on Mother's Day. What a bone-chilling sight. I don't think I have ever seen it that wild before. It was coral colored and so loud. There was a log lying in the middle of the falls about half way down and it was fighting for it's life there. It didn't budge though. Way to go, you water-soaked log!!

By Charlie at Pasty Central on Thursday, May 15, 2003 - 08:41 am:

Toivo buddy, looks like you may be running out of steam on your trip. No wonder, staying up all hours of the night. Give me a call when you get up, and I'll work with you to get your travel page caught up. I figure you should be in either New Hampshire or Connecticut by now.

By the way, flooding from the rain last weekend has finally gone down. Here in Eagle River it totally washed out Garden City Road, which looks like a mini-Grand Canyon.

By Andy, Ohio on Thursday, May 15, 2003 - 08:48 am:

Nice to see a bird feeder on the Copper Harbor Cam - now I can birdwatch from my desk.

I took my girlfriend back home to da UP last summer and showed her Eagle River Falls - talk about polar opposites in water flow!

By m,mi on Thursday, May 15, 2003 - 09:26 am:

what car

By Surfer Dude on Thursday, May 15, 2003 - 09:47 am:

Where are the Greenwood Falls located?

By Carole on Thursday, May 15, 2003 - 09:51 am:

If you look to the top right of the Greenwood falls picture there appears to be an old car by the birch trees. Personally, I think it is a boulder with a fallen tree behind it. (kinda like the 'haunted house' window on John Dees site a few years back)

By Chris, IL on Thursday, May 15, 2003 - 09:55 am:

WOW

By Kevin K. Lodi, Ca. on Thursday, May 15, 2003 - 10:01 am:

I think your right Carole,
At first look it could be a car, but on closer inspection I can see a boulder.

By Kate, CA on Thursday, May 15, 2003 - 10:26 am:

I opened the Greenwood falls photo in photoshop so
I could magnify the image and it looks like
branches and tree limbs to me. Mind you, the
pixels get distorted when magnified, but it still
looked like tree limbs. The U.P. looks so lush
right now. How are the bugs?

By Indiana girl on Thursday, May 15, 2003 - 10:28 am:

I think Toivo needs a vacation from his vacation.

By Sherie, Oklahoma City on Thursday, May 15, 2003 - 10:42 am:

That top picture looks like the water in Oklahoma. I was so amazed when I moved here three years ago to see red water in the lakes..wow I mean after seeing such clear water all my life in Michigan I didnt understand why their water here especially in Lake Thunderbird was so red...ITS THE RED DIRT...amazing how dirt can be a different color in another state but its cool.

By ss,houghton on Thursday, May 15, 2003 - 10:45 am:

The ticks are out in full force. Found three on my dog yesterday. Mosquitos are starting to make an apperance. No black flies yet.

There is still snow on Mt. Ripley. Kind of a cool site to see the lush green grass with mountains of snow here and there.

By js mich on Thursday, May 15, 2003 - 10:49 am:

it looks like a boulder with a brich branch laying across ways on top of the boulder to look like a car

By Jim Copper Country on Thursday, May 15, 2003 - 11:31 am:

re: Greenwood Falls....on the Big Iron River just south of Silver City and a bit west off hwy M64...also known as Bonanza Falls

By eyes wide shut on Thursday, May 15, 2003 - 11:40 am:

I think that travel weary Toivo needs a sauna and a pasty. ASAP. And I'm sure after all the hustle and bustle of the road (not to mention the big apple) he will be quite ready to spend months in seclusion in the woods of Toivola rejuvinating his yooper spirit.
Come on home and let Superior soothe your soul Toivo.

By Moron Boy in Troll Land on Thursday, May 15, 2003 - 11:54 am:

Molly in Houghton, the log is an inspiration to all other waterfall-oppressed logs! No log should take such oppression, except the ones that my house was built with!

By Charlie, out and about in the Keweenaw on Thursday, May 15, 2003 - 11:59 am:

BLACK FLY ALERT. Jonathan and I were hooking up wireless for a Pasty.NET member in South Range, when we were suddenly attacked by four big black flies. Also at a wireless install out in Point Mills I think I saw another one. We've had beautiful weather here the last couple of days, so a lot of outside work.

Several questions received about the new high speed wireless Internet service, which is now available if you are near-line-of-sight to either Quincy Mine (up to 7 miles away) or St. Anne's Church in Calumet. We are working on publishing complete specs and prices over on the Pasty.NET home page. Right now the most active clusters of members are around the downtown areas of Calumet and Houghton. For more info, email wireless@pasty.net. To everyone on the waiting list, we are installing in the order received, as quickly as we are able. Last night we received final approval from Keweenaw County for the expansion into the Peninsula. Hope to get the service up to Lac LaBelle, Eagle Harbor, and Copper Harbor later this summer.

By JH - ER, MI on Thursday, May 15, 2003 - 12:00 pm:

That wasn't an oppressed log. It was only swimming upstream to spawn.

By Lily, MI on Thursday, May 15, 2003 - 12:03 pm:

Toivo, dear, will you please kiss the air of New England for me? Especially Massachusetts (anywhere) and the White Mountains of New Hampshire (excellent camping there, by the way). This is for a native, homesick, New Englander, who hopes to visit there this summer.

By Cousin Jack on Thursday, May 15, 2003 - 12:03 pm:

Hmmm...wash cycle(love that dirty water) and then rinse cycle(clear as snowmelt).
Didn't I clue in Toivo back on the May 9th Pasty Cam that it "doesn't take a weatherman to tell which way the wind is blowin'"?
OAK-LA-HOMA's muddy tornadic winds have come whipping up from the plains all the way to Garden City Creek where I once caught my limit of speckled brookies when but a wee boy.
Clue #3: "The disguise was perfect. He wore a costume of Trout Fishing in America."

By Yooper in Indiana on Thursday, May 15, 2003 - 12:16 pm:

Question?
50 years ago today, is that not the date that the Calument Methodist Church burned?

By Jeff, MN on Thursday, May 15, 2003 - 12:51 pm:

How wonderful...Greenwood Falls! I spent many glorious spring and summer days sliding down those falls in my youth. Of course the rapids are not that strong, but are respectable. We would jump off the ledges in the deep water pools. Rumor has it there are tunnels and air pockets underneath the rocks and falls. Haven't ventured that far under. Good times and Great memories from that picture. Thank you to the person that provided that pic.

By Skoviak clan member, Minn on Thursday, May 15, 2003 - 01:22 pm:

Greenwoods as us White Piners called it. i can't believe how high the water is. We spent many summer days swimming in the falls. You could swim through tunnels but it is not recommended. Very tight and dark and No there are not airpockets. Thanks for the awesome picture Dan.

By Al, Ca on Thursday, May 15, 2003 - 01:35 pm:

I think the "car" is actually a prehistoric AKA Fred Flintstone Mobile, as the constuction materials do match.... that may be an archaeological site ya got der.

By Kerry, Mi on Thursday, May 15, 2003 - 01:36 pm:

Hey the Detroit Pistons won 78-77 just wanted to check to see if there are any Pistons fans way up there watching the games? Anyway I was at that game lastnight and it was Crazy Pistons in 6
were going to take on the Nets next week :-)

By Kate - Ann Arbor MI on Thursday, May 15, 2003 - 02:03 pm:

I hope everything is all right up there. Local news down here is talking about "a washed out dam threatened to flood homes" in Marquette. Anybody else here about this?

By bob on Thursday, May 15, 2003 - 02:13 pm:

I think the comments are as enjoyable as the photo's sometime!
Great pic's today!!! (and comments!)

By mo, mi on Thursday, May 15, 2003 - 02:15 pm:

Oh boy! If it was 50 years since the Methodist church in Calumet burned, I am old. Remember it well, but couldn't tell you the date.

By dick, fl on Thursday, May 15, 2003 - 02:21 pm:

Kate Check the Mining Journal for that news. Here is a link to it. http://www.miningjournal.net/

By Steve racine Wi. on Thursday, May 15, 2003 - 07:45 pm:

Does anybody kmow what's going on in Marquette? It's been all over the news here in Racine. It did'nt look real pleasant. I used to live in the U.P. and am conserned about what's going on. Thank you.

By Searchinforever on Friday, May 16, 2003 - 03:47 am:

Hey you guys found my car! Yah know it all started when I was at Pauls supper club about 40 years ago...it was during smelt season...and after quite a few smelt heads and beers I couldn't drive her outa der. Looks as though the trees have grown in around her...I gave up looking cause I also lost the keys in the river that night...

By Brenda J Shamion MI on Friday, May 16, 2003 - 08:29 am:

Dan, was that picture of Greenwoods Falls from the recent heavy rain fall you just had up there? I love seeing all the familiar pictures from home. =)

By Steve in Virginia on Friday, May 16, 2003 - 08:45 am:

Marquette made the National news this morning. The Today show has a shot of a boat going over one of the dams on the Dead River outside Marquette and CBS Radio said there was a state of emergency in the UP today!

By John-Canton on Saturday, May 17, 2003 - 09:43 pm:

Sure looks like a Jeep-like vehicle even after a couple Bosh. Course I also saw the Spaulding
Light.

By Carolyn, AZ on Sunday, May 18, 2003 - 09:57 am:

Charlie,
You said the flooding washed out the Garden City Road. Are you talking about where the Garden City Creek crosses the road near the Bible Camp? Did it do any damage to the camp?
Carolyn

By Charlie at Pasty Central on Sunday, May 18, 2003 - 11:59 am:

Carolyn,

It did knock out the water pipe which goes along the road to the cabins, but no other damage done to any buildings. We'll try to get a picture of it before the road commission rebuilds the road.
