They tell me the road was still closed on Monday from the heavy rains in Keweenaw over the weekend. At least the road crew didn't have to fight black flies, as Jonathan's note in the photo inbox said they haven't arrived yet.

Wah! What traffic by comparison out here in New York City. And the people just walk around through the cars, washing windows and looking for a buck. I crossed over to stay in a hotel in Queens, and they asked me how many hours I wanted the room. hmmm - - I'll have to sleep fast. More to report tomorrow.

What a weird storm too! That wind came from a different direction than I've experienced before. Hadda go out in that, and I'm no lightweight, but didn't think my feet were gonna stay on the ground! The line from the Wizard.."It's a twister Auntie Em" came to mind many a time!!!

No, Martha, not all of the snow is gone yet. Yesterday on the way back from Houghton to Calumet, we took the "lower route" through Dollar Bay and Lake Linden. Passing Ripley, we noticed some snow still on the hillside, then coming up into Laurium, sure enough, there was the "Laurium Glacier" out by Moyle's. We'll probably have some pretty warm days before it disappears.

Jonathan and I climbed up in the top of Quincy Mine shafthouse yesterday, where the wind had almost ripped off our wireless Internet antenna. Looking down across the valley, and back toward Boston, we could see quite a few new fallen trees. It really was a rough weekend.

Our thanks again to Toivo for staying up late to do the Pasty Cam for all of us early risers... Be careful in that Long Island traffic!

Toivo MUST try a New York City Pretzle and a slice of New York City Pizza! Those are two things you can't leave New York without trying. It would be like visiting the UP and not having a Pasty! :)

To All At Pasty Central: First of all Thanks for all that you do, & what a Great Job it is. I visit this web page very often but this is my first comment. My Mother was born and raised in Chassell, and as a kid, we made many trips to the U.P. over the years. I live in Louisiana now & I feel fortunate to be able to bring my Mom & Dad to the U.P. for an annual visit for the past 6-7 years. It's been great to come & visit, see relatives, and enjoy the weather and the beauty of the U.P. My question is about the Laurium Glacier. I have heard it mentioned a couple of times and remember seeing it here on the Pasty Central before. Please tell me more of the Glacier. Why in Laurium, how long will it last, does it happen each year, does it go back as far as anyone can remember, are there any other glaciers in the U.P., and last question is, is there information out there that tells about these glaciers.

Jerry: For more info go to John Dee's Snow Central on the web & read some of his recent journals (a good thing to do anyway!). I e-mailed him through the Ask John because I wanted to know how deep the snow is at the "Laurium Glacier". He said it was probably 10-15 feet in March. He also said it is a gully that fills with snow, and then snow drifts across the adjoining hill.

Methinks you are just trying to avoid revealing the rest of the clue. I don't know what we are going to do when your trip is finaly over and you are home safely in
Toivola. You can tell we lead a quiet life.

John Dee has a little contest each year on his site to guess when the "Laurium Glacier" will melt. The contest is closed to guesses now. Everyone is just waiting to see who has the closest guess! He posts pictures periodically in his journal, to keep people up to date. Here's a copy of his latest photo of the "Glacier", from his May 8th journal.....

As I recall the Laurium Glacier was always still there when I went home from work on the friday before Memorial Day but Monday AM it was gone
