Hello,
I have somehow fixed my camera, it is still not in the perfect condition though. This shot was taken today at Redridge. I didn't drop the camera this time.

Toivo is spending an extra day in South Carolina to visit with Tina and Grammy

By Kevin K. Lodi, Ca. on Friday, May 2, 2003 - 01:11 am:

Toivo,
Glad to see that the camera is up and working again.
The above shot looks as if it could have been taken as the camera fell in the other day.
In Toivo's word's "Good night from California and good morning from da U.P.

By Alice, Ventura, CA on Friday, May 2, 2003 - 01:36 am:

Great picture! Kevin is right, it does look like it was taken as the camera fell in the water.

Hi Kevin- Good night also from California, good morning from da UP. Kind of nice to see tomorrow's picture tonight, eh?

By Sam MI on Friday, May 2, 2003 - 02:55 am:

Springtime whitewater splender in da U.P., there is nothing like it.

By me on Friday, May 2, 2003 - 05:11 am:

Mother Nature's raw power at it's finest. Glad the camera is working Taka!

By Rivera on Friday, May 2, 2003 - 06:45 am:

Kudos on the frame indeed, the perception of great speed and turbulence (almost like a boat wake) is captured in the foreground with the blurred effect, yet near the center a few seemingly motionless droplets of water are suspended in time giving one a sense of peace and tranquility amidst the tempest.

By Alex Tiensivu, Georgia on Friday, May 2, 2003 - 07:45 am:

By George... I think we have a WOW, I do! What a shot!

By DMac on Friday, May 2, 2003 - 07:52 am:

WONDERFUL shot Taka!

On another note, Electric Scotland has added a STAND UP FOR AMERICA link on their site:

Thought ya'll may be interested!

By Mr. Wheatman, South end on Friday, May 2, 2003 - 09:14 am:

Kudos on the fine shot. It is a locale indiginous anglers know well indeed. I have "wet a line" here many times, as the mighty steelhead lurks in hydrogenous caverns below the surface, ameliorated by the swollen flow of spring, waiting for a properly presented spawn sack or spinner. 'Tis therapy for winter doldrums, as is the photo itself.

Does anyone know where the smelt are running? We would like to dip a net or two over the weekend!

Thanks in advance!

By MjN03 on Friday, May 2, 2003 - 11:16 am:

I am heading back home to Da U.P. in early June but I need to secure some smelt for Pike fishing. Does anyone know if the smelt are running in the Houghton/Hancock area ?

By Tina, Howell on Friday, May 2, 2003 - 11:33 am:

Taka, is that picture taken from the base of the dam? I've driven by there forever on my way to Freda but never have been down there.

By BBB, Bootjack on Friday, May 2, 2003 - 11:49 am:

The smelt have run heavy at times at like 3:00 to 4:00 in the morning at the Dreamland creek in Bootjack.

By cak on Friday, May 2, 2003 - 05:59 pm:

Lets forget about Toivo for today, but WHAT happened to Donn de Yampert? He hasn't posted for a while.

By Kevin K, Lodi,Ca on Friday, May 2, 2003 - 06:17 pm:

Alice in Ventura Ca,
Yes it is nice to see the photo's the day before.
Glad to see another U.P.lover here in California.

By RD, Iowa on Friday, May 2, 2003 - 06:31 pm:

But cak, haven't you heard? Toivo IS Donn de Yampert

By Kevin, SF, CA on Friday, May 2, 2003 - 09:31 pm:

Kevin and Alice in California,
Glad to read there is another Kevin in
California, who is also a U.P. lover!!
Our family is driving there this summer. Four
of us from California and three from Florida
are meeting in Iron County, MI and will
definitely visit the Keweenaw. Great antidote to
the urban scene (rat race) of San Francisco.
Kevin.

Toivo........true or false......has brought us something to look forward to the last 53 days...and while he has been out there (where ever, near or far)have you noticed most ice & snow is gone and spring has come?

The pictures are always a stop during my day.....and all of you seem like a good friend.....and it is fun to read everyone's comments and learn the history .

So if it is just a ruse to pass the winter.....it was fun.......if not I want to see pictures of "Mr.T", Tina & Granny......and all the places we have read about Tiovo stopping.

I'll be behind Alex in line to buy the second T-shirt........being Yoopers......should it be a sweatshirt instead?

Have a great weekend all.......

By Fran, Ga. on Friday, May 2, 2003 - 10:12 pm:

Love the picture Taka, sure hope you keep in touch when you leave there. We'll all be missing you.

I wondered if people still went smelting up there. When I was in High School a whole bunch of us from town would go down by the bridge($Bay) with our nets and get a LOT of smelt.Around that time you could not give a smelt away to anyone in town.My mom dipped them in flour and fried them nice and crispy. They were good.

This Toivo mystery keeps getting more interesting! Maybe when he returns it will be Toivo and Tina! Who knows.

Will be up on Sat. Will visit some of the falls
that have been featured lately. THANK YOU!

MJNO3,
I have asked around about the smelt run last couple days. Word is the runs are happening South of us but haven't got here, yet. I haven't measured the water temp but a few guys have said it's still too cold. There have been fires burning at Cole's Creek in the morning when I'm on my way to drop off the kids at school, so people are starting to watch closely...
You can always buy live smelt/suckers, whatever at the General Store, going up the hill on M-26, or at the new bait and tackle shop out 41, on the way to Chassell.

I hope it's a Tee-Shirt... but he said mine was free! :) :) :)

cak......FORGET TOIVO????? NEVER!!......the plot thickens indeed.......is grandma in SC to be trusted with our Toivo....remember what happened to Red Riding Hood??....He is one of our own and belongs back in the good ole UP where he is safe....and he and Tina can live happily ever after.....in Toivola.....

By eyes wide shut on Saturday, May 3, 2003 - 11:19 am:

Debbie.....MI

Tee Shirt!! Yes!! Sweatshirt, NO!!!
Tee shirt more practical and flexible. We can wear it all summer in UP. Then in winter, we can wear it under our flannel underwear or flannel shirts.
By the way, mind your manners and move to the back of the line instead of cutting into second behind Alex. Lots of us already lined up a few days ago.

Me thinks Toivo's trip across the Province's to Alaska is just an excuse to make another stop in Washington on the way home!!!!! Maybe he will get home by the time snow flies again!!

By FJL Milw. on Saturday, May 3, 2003 - 11:19 am:

Not to worry!!!!!! It never left the U.P.

By Kate, CA on Saturday, May 3, 2003 - 12:31 pm:

Back in the dark ages when I was a student at NMU
in Marquette, I recall the smelt runs happened in
early to mid-May. In those days, folks used to
burn tires along the banks of the river for warmth
and for light while smelting. (I hope they're not
still doing that.)

By maija MI on Tuesday, February 17, 2004 - 08:03 pm:

Taka, again I am compelled to say: DON'T LEAVE US! Or if you have to, please keep sending pictures from wherever you go. You may think people are just saying this, but your pictures ARE exceptionally awesome!
