If you go up along Jacob's Falls, you can find many small / medium size of water falls. I stupidly dropped my camera into water today. It is not working anymore.. Therefore those photos might be my last photos that I will send to Pasty till I get a job and have enough money to buy another one. Have a good day.

Thanks for the great pic! I can almost smell the water and feel the mist on my face. Real sorry to hear about your mishap with the camera, terrible way to end a great hike. Kodak fixed my DC3200 twice in the first six months after I bought it and now that the warranty is up and it will not work again they say your on your own. So I know how tough it is to buy another one. I hope you are enjoying Columbia. It has been a while since I have thought back on my stay there at Ft. Jackson. Many fond memories Columbia & Sumpter. I wonder if Jimmies Drive inn is still at the main gate. They had these great hamburgers the size of a salad plate. Towering pines and historic homes, I hope they still remain.

Taka..you are much too talented...either that wet camera will dry out and work, or something's gonna happen to stick one back in your hands! Wait and see.....

Taka--How far up the falls are you in the picture? I've been there many times, and my husband has hiked up part way. I'm curious as to how much of the falls is above what you see from the road.

Toivo, I read you trip note from 04/29. The correct spelling of the colour of your skin is pastey, as in paste white. I know, my skin is also pastey or as some call it "fish-belly white".

Ever been to the headwaters of Jacob’s Creek? I visited there many years ago. My uncle, Wilbert Kristo, took us there by car, the back way. Uncle "Kris" would drive his cars anywhere. Any way the creek seemed to gush out from between two large rocks.

Uncle “Kris” was the most knowledgeable person about the Keweenaw. He owned the Office Shop in Calumet for many years. He was also a photographer who took pictures of the area and made them into post cards, of which he distributed through the Office Shop. In fact you can still find some of the post cards for sale in the area. Uncle Kris knew of "ice" mines, old narrow gage railroad beds, "lost" cemeteries, and the like, a virtual walking atlas/encyclopedia of the Keweenaw. Uncle Kris passed on quite a while back, but he and his tours of the Copper Country still remain in my memory.

Taka, so sorry to hear about your digicam. Try an old trick: find a gas stove that has a pilot light in it (not electronic ignition). Don't turn it, on but put the cam inside for at least half a day. The extra warmth may dry it out safely.

Hello?? Now I got it. All except the last little bit. Still haven't got that figured out.

Taka, remove the batteries from your camera, very important to eliminate short circuiting and blowing out electronic circuits. Open the camera as much as possible and just let it dry out for at least a week. You might further damage it from heat by trying to hasten drying with heated appliances. If it is dirty it wouldn't hurt to use distilled water to flush it off and then let it dry as per above. With a prayer and some luck the camera has a good chance to come back to life. If you have already tried to operate the camera while it was internally wet your chances are not very good for it to work agan without major overhaul. I have been witness to many electronic component recoveries by following the above advice. Good luck!

Thank your for you concerns about my camera everyone. I somehow fixed my camera. It is working ok now, still not in the perfect condition though.

It is not too far to reach the point where I am standing in the photo, probably less than quarter mile. However, the path is not easy to walk, and you probably have to soak your foot to reach the largest portion of the series of the falls. It is a continuous drop of about 30 foot or so.

U.P. seems to have many cool waterfalls that are not on the map. I am hoping to see few more before I leave here.

Is the headwaters to the Jacob's creek behind Central? We duck hunt on a pond that appears on a map to connect to Jacob's creek?

Taka-You might like Silver River Falls north of L'anse (not the ones in the Keweenaw) and L'anse Falls. Some people say there are 50 waterfalls on the L'anse River. Both of these falls are easily accessible & good photo opps. If you want to go & need directions to the best spot, e-mail me.

Taka's camera probably has a removeable disk or memory card. A little water should'nt hurt the media which has pictures already recorded on it. Just a matter of removing the disk or card and downloading it into a computer.

I was up in the Canadian Rockies one time and thought I saw Toivo out in the woods eating a deer. I snuck around a big rock to take a closer look. Turned out to be a Sasquatch. Kind of a relief for me though. Noone would've ever believed me if I told them I had actually seen Toivo.

Who else remembers the beaver dam at Meadow Lake breaking in the late 60's, or early 70's ???
The gush of H2O took out the Eagle Harbor Shortcut Road, rumbled down Jacobs Falls, and washed away that motel that used to be there...
What was the name of that place ????

I remember when the motel got washed away. We went to see and there was NOTHING left but some concrete pads. Sort of impressive.

Sorry to hear about your camera! It was your Downtown Houghton photo that finally forced me to go out and buy a digital camera. Hope it stays working, now!!
Anyway, there is a website somewhere that lists a large number of UP/Keweenaw waterfalls, complete with directions, descriptions and photos. I have the URL on an old bookmark file from my Netscape back on my ship. I just have to sift through a bunch of CD's and I will post on here as soon as I find it.

That's what we call "poetic justice" here in the Keweenaw, K! I too saw the debacle first hand. The really awesome feat was how much of those huge poor rock piles just NW of the Eagle Harbor cutoff road the damburst's deluge took with it.

Toivo is probably the reincarnation of the famous World War II secret and mysterious "Kilroy" who would show up at the most unusual places and leave his signature with only his eyes and nose peeking over a wall with the message" Kilroy was here" Could it be ???

Definitely early 70's, R Somero, but I couldn't reliably pinpoint the exact year without consulting DMG's archives.

Spring of '71 would be my best guess.

I remember there was a little rock shop that was right next to the creek that got washed out, too. We took an excursion up to Copper Harbor were surprized to see the rock shop gone. It had to be 1970 or 1971 because I think I was about 6 or 7.

There is a new Nancy Drew mystery in the book store, "Pasty Lovers And Their Missing Toivo".

Thanks Frank, it's good to be back. I ran up and took a peek at the falls the day after getting back and they were running hard. Very beautiful, but the pictures I took looked very washed out and dismal due to a heavy fog/mist that day. Many sunny ones to come, though...

The site I am thinking of was done by a woman from Downstate or one of the states below us to the West. I checked out the site you mentioned above by doing a search on Google for UP waterfalls. Came up with a couple good sites.
