Toivo, in the Sunshine State on Tuesday, April 29, 2003 - 01:57 am:

Yesterday it was R.C. - - today it's R.W. with a current glimpse of wildlife in the U.P. This little guy probably disappeared real quick when he heard the Pasty Cam click.

Rolled in to Pensacola a little late this evening. Took a while to catch up on Cam Notes. Sounds like a yooper identity crisis. Will probably spend a couple of days in the Sunshine State, get a tan just to prove it's really me.
Goodnight from Florida and good morning from da U.P. trip notes fl

Okay, at 9 a.m. it isn't showing my 8 a.m. post so I do another one and then I get the old and the new......well, it looks like no one else is posting yet this morning so looks like it's just me over and over. Have a good day!

By Sarah, Born Again Yooper on Tuesday, April 29, 2003 - 09:14 am:

Toivo is Finnish for "hope"!! Maybe Charlie is only dreaming, and "hopes" to visit these places some day!!!

By Frank C, northeastern Illinois on Tuesday, April 29, 2003 - 09:57 am:

Toivo, did you feel the earthquake this morn? It was a 4.9, 10 miles ENE of Fort Payne, Alabama. http://wwwneic.cr.usgs.gov/neis/bulletin/neic_teak_l.html

By Mr. Wheatman, South end on Tuesday, April 29, 2003 - 10:23 am:

Ahhh the eminent red squirrel. An enthralling creature in it's own right, yet an irksome brigand at my bird feeder. A sure sign of spring is his incessant chattering indeed. Kudos is due on the fine shot, he appears at the ready to "commit the crime" if you will.

By Fran,Ga on Tuesday, April 29, 2003 - 10:23 am:

I was awake at about 5:10a.m. and I felt the rumbling of the walls. It sort of sounded like something large and dull was hitting the side of the house.I got up to see what I could see and saw nothing. Then people started calling in from all over the Tn Valley and North Ga area. There is a New Madrid Fault in Memphis.WE have had minor quakes before but nothing like this. Personally I'd rather have snow than earthquakes or tornadoes.

Alex did you feel anything down that way?

By Mike B, Pittsburgh, wishin I was still in the Yoop on Tuesday, April 29, 2003 - 10:45 am:

Looks like a beautiful morning in the Keweenaw today.

Toivo's real name is a secret he is act...

By Charlie at Pasty Central on Tuesday, April 29, 2003 - 11:47 am:

Sarah,

Our family has already been to many of the places Toivo has visited on this trip. Before we moved to Eagle River in the 80's, we traveled the U.S. and Canada in a motor home, installing turnkey computer systems in offices all over the country, and speaking at trade association conferences. In one 6-week period we saw both the Atlantic and Pacific, the Grand Canyon and the Statue of Liberty, Canada and Mexico. Through all of our travels we stayed in some fascinating, beautiful, historic places, but none which made us feel more at home than the U.P. Our fondest "hope" for many years was to move to the Keweenaw, which we did in 1988.

Come to think of it... there are a few stops Toivo has made on his trip, which Edie and I would like to see someday.

By Alex Tiensivu, Georgia, and hopeful for a real Toivo meeting on Tuesday, April 29, 2003 - 12:04 pm:

Well... Toivo answered my E-Mail, and we are trying to put something together for tomorrow night or Wednesday morning, for my family and Fran to meet in the area of Stone Mountain.

We'll see... TOIVO... WE BELIEVE IN YOU!

(Never asked him if he was traveling with Pasties!)

Fran... Stand by for info when I hear back from him...

By Sue, Copper Country on Tuesday, April 29, 2003 - 12:13 pm:

WE'RE STILL WAITING FOR THAT PICTURE OF TOIVO IN HIS TRAVELS ACROSS THE US. YOU'VE GOT EVERYONE CURIOUS NOW!!!

By Mary Lou on Tuesday, April 29, 2003 - 12:49 pm:

I believe there really is a Toivo....When I was growing up in the Copper Country I think every large Finnish family had a Toivo.......I married the best man I ever knew (cutest, too)..he was half Finnish and had an Uncle Toivo (& Sulo, Aimo, Urho & Waikko)..the best qualities I found in that family was there sense of humor..and "no-BS" attitude...all had Sisu & were very successful....my mother-in-law is still a happy, healthy & joyfull sharp-person at age 92 ...This ( much younger) Toivo seems to have all these qualities...so I am believer....

By Mary on Tuesday, April 29, 2003 - 12:52 pm:

The Stone Mountain park is really impressive! Maybe a picture of Toivo, Alex and Fran, with the mountain in the background! Or, better yet, maybe the three of you could get right on the carving in the mountain, for a photo!! :) Here's a couple shots of the Mountain, for the pasty cam viewers who've never been there!

Mary, thanks for the pictures. Pretty impressive!

By Alex Tiensivu, Georgia, Waiting For Toivo To Write Back! on Tuesday, April 29, 2003 - 03:28 pm:

I live 5-7 miles from Stone Mountain... It is a MUST see for anyone travling the Atlanta area for the first time.

By Alex Tiensivu, Georgia on Tuesday, April 29, 2003 - 03:30 pm:

...should have mentioned that you can fit a BUS in the horse's mouth! That gives you an idea of how HUGE this carving is!

By Sherry in N FL on Tuesday, April 29, 2003 - 04:21 pm:

Stone Mt is very impressive. Went there about 8 years ago. We rode a tram/cable car to the top. There we were able to walk around the top of mountain. Great views all around that area.

By A former Yooper from the LP on Tuesday, April 29, 2003 - 04:23 pm:

To Mary Lou:
Don't forget all those Finnish Lempi's and Impi's. Had one of each in our family.

By Mary on Tuesday, April 29, 2003 - 04:23 pm:

Tina, Howell, MI:
Your welcome!

Alex:
I totally agree! I've driven through the Atlanta area quite a few times, traveling south from this "winter wonderland" called the U.P., but back in Sept. I had the opportunity to stay right in Atlanta. That's when we visited Stone Mountain. Took the skylift up to the top of the mountain, now that was impressive, when you're going right by the carving, you can actually see how enormous it is. From the history I've read, the man who carved Mount Rushmore, Gutzon Borglum, was the original sculptor of the Memorial, but none of his original carving remains.

Quote:

The carving is 90 feet tall and 190 feet wide, stands eleven and a half feet out from the side of the mountain and towers 400 feet above the ground in a frame that is 360 feet square or three acres. Fifty-five years elapsed from the time of the original concept in 1915 until completion of the three figures in 1970. Not a blow of the hammer was struck for 36 years, from 1928 to 1964.

Very true... They ran out of funding! Then, someone got back into it and the result is unreal. You really have to see it to appreciate it. Personally? I like the lift bridge better! -Smirk-

By John-Canton on Tuesday, April 29, 2003 - 09:23 pm:

Great shots as usual. Mr. Wheatman your comments
are the best. Thanks

By Jus me in da U.P. on Tuesday, April 29, 2003 - 10:41 pm:

Alex,
Do you live near Smyrna? I was there about ten years ago and saw Stone Mtn.

By Alex on Wednesday, April 30, 2003 - 12:13 am:

I am not far from Smyrna at all! I live closer to Stone Mountain, so if you're in the area... Call and we'll do lunch!

By cak on Wednesday, April 30, 2003 - 07:02 am:

I have gotten spoiled, it is Wednesday, 7 a.m., and no new picture from Toivo or updated trip notes. Did he get too much sunshine? (hope he is okay)

By lmg on Wednesday, April 30, 2003 - 08:29 am:

Maybe he got stuck in the horses mouth of the Stone Mt carving. Or maybe his old beater tossed up another part. Or maybe he took a wrong turn and ended up in Disney world.

By Karen P, MN on Wednesday, April 30, 2003 - 08:46 am:

I think that he and Alex (by the roadside) got together and they are both still recuperating!

By Charlie at Pasty Central on Wednesday, April 30, 2003 - 10:14 am:

Sorry for the delay on uploading Wednesday's Pasty Cam, due to some missed communication. Toivo had to cut short his stay in Florida when he received word of a special arrival scheduled this afternoon at Columbia, South Carolina (Tina?). After a long drive yesterday, he tossed the editor's baton back to me for our month-end memorial picture. Right about now he is probably cruising around Stone Mountain on his way to SC, looking for the "Welcome Toivo" signs.

By Karen P, MN on Wednesday, April 30, 2003 - 02:20 pm:

This little guy is so inquisitive and cheeky, I think he's a WOW

By eye spy on Wednesday, April 30, 2003 - 03:02 pm:

Alex sorry for your luck.
The plot thickens in the "Toivo Conspiracy".
A computer glitch, how convienent.
