Photos from R.C. Wetton

By Robert C Wetton, Dollar Bay, MI on Sunday, April 20, 2003 - 09:20 am:

The top picture is a version of the tanker delivery truck in those days. They had to carry the product to the homes in 5 gallon containers. The bottom shot is a photo from back in 1921. Note the solid rubber tires!! The young lad, Theodore Wetton just passed away this year at the age of 95. The driver, Albert Auger, had returned from WWI three years prior. The photo was taken in front of the Wetton home in Ripley.

I love the three digit phone number on the side of the truck in the top photo. Simpler times. Did those solid rubber tires cause a bumpy ride?

Bob,Ripley looked different then.Your Uncle Ted live a long life did't he? What was his wife's name-just can't recall it. My dad wore bib overalls for a long time He used to get them from Campioni's store on Santori's corner in Hancock.`That was fine unless he came home with some for ME! I hated them things but he also brought cookies so that made up for the overalls.Campioni's store was a really neat place.I loved going there.Mr Campioni was a nice man-----Maybe cause he always gave me cookies? HaHa!! Happy Easter Everyone!

Alex, looks like Toivo is coming down I-24 to Chattanooga and maybe take in Rock City, Ruby Falls and the Aquarium. I-24 heads to 75 close to me and then he'd be headed your way. It is a pretty good time of the yr to visit this area. I'll keep my eyes open!!

By Alex Tiensivu, Georgia, wearing the Toivo sighting glasses on Sunday, April 20, 2003 - 09:37 pm:

Yes... But will he meet with us!!!! That is the question! I wish we could contact him, because if he's going to be there, we COULD actually get together! (Wonder if he has a 50 state supply of Pasties with him). He's PROBABLY going to come even closer, since he will certainly want to come INTO Georgia. Toivo... If you see this, we wanna meet you! It's too good an opportunity!

Boy Dan thats great being able to make those out with aids, may I should go for that operation also. Yes Fran, he sure did however my Dad is pushing 98 this summer, and still is as sharp as a tack. Teds wife was Wilma, as Ted would always say she passed away the night Neil Armstrong walked on the moon!!

Is that a MACK truck in the lower pic? Looks like the one at the UP Steam and Gas Association museum on the UP State Fairgrounds. The rear wheels are chain driven.
