Toivo, where the wind comes whippin tru da plain on Saturday, April 12, 2003 - 01:36 am:

Couple years back Pasty Cam advertised Jack Nordine's mighty midget snowplow near Bergland, and now 89 year-young Jack's back wit a new Luxury Model. His 1996 Lincoln Town Car is decked out for those late Spring snows in the U.P. Thanks to Jack's grandson Jeff Kalember for sending it our way.

Enough with the winter pictures this week. I promise next week we'll switch to something a little more greener.

It's really not far, up Interstate 35 from Dallas to Oklahoma City. Remember it in the news a few years ago, but never seen it in person. Came a little farther north near a familiar sounding town - - Stillwater.
G'night from Oklahoma and good morning from da U.P. trip notes ok

"O-O-O-OAK-la HOMa where the wind comes whippin' up from the plain!"

Some perennial ears of Eternal Summer's sweet corn have already branched higher than a honeybee's knee here in the Upper Midwest's Heartland and no one knows exactly why!

Could you briefly explain these jiffy-pop("with a fringe on top") appearances of hilarious super-naturality, Toivo?

Not that I'm counting, but by my spontaneous esoteric telemetry you still owe me one ;o)

From one Dharma Bum to another,
CJ

CJ - -

I lost my decoder ring somewhere back in New Mexico, otherwise I might be able to figure out what the heck yer tryin' to say. But I did know a girl named Dharma Tikkanen once - - or was it Darla?

Did I mention, Jack Nordine in the first shot above is almost 90 ?? Hope I still have his sense of humor by the time I arrive there.

Where was the shot of Jack taken? Did he ever sell the jeep?

What has happened to the archives for the first three months of 2003. I am at my daughters home it the Detroit area and wanted to show her a photo from either January or February 2003 and there appears to no way to access this info. Any help on this?

Ned,

The complete archives can be reached at the top of the main Pasty Cam page. On top of the 5 year calender is the 2003 listing for Jan Feb and Mar

I think Jack (my grandfather) did end up selling the Jeep with the plow on it. I will have to give him a call and ask for sure. He was so proud to be featured on Pasty.com with the Jeep plow he sent me this photo, taken right in front of his house in Bergland, to send to pasty.com again.

Ned. The archives are there. There's not the year there, there's just the three months right at the top. Click on each one.

UPDATE - Just off the phone with Jack Nordine and he decided to keep the JEEP plow (mighty midget)and has it down by his house. He is using it until he "retires", but may part with it for the "right price!" Since my grandfather is now 89 I am wondering if there is an official yooper retirement age? 95? 100?

How is Charlie? Hope all is well. Please, no more snow photos! Only thoughts of spring and summer!!!

By Charlie, resting at home, Eagle River, MI on Saturday, April 12, 2003 - 05:09 pm:

Hi all,

Thanks for all the emails and good wishes while I've been sidelined this week. It is remarkable how surgical methods have improved over the years. Little more than 48 hours ago I was under the knife at Portage in Hancock, went home later that day, and now feel fine, even without pain medication. I went for a slow walk earlier here in Eagle River, where it's a beautiful sunny day.

I had to laugh at Toivo's comments about doctors holding your abdomen and making you cough. I always wondered the reason for that during physicals in gym class. My surgeon, Dr. Timothy Sears, gave me a colorful book about hernias the day before the operation (a fascinating read), so now that I've learned all about the condition, I don't have it any more. I'll still be moving kind of slow for a couple of weeks, and appreciate Toivo doing the daily Cam, along with his reports from the road.

I agree. It's time for spring in the U.P., and today's snow shot will hopefully be the last until about October.

Toivo on the road...looks like you will be heading up 35 through Kansas City, Kansas & Kansas City, Missouri...jus a heads up, once you get on 35 heading north into Missouri, keep an eye out for a billboard advertising the "Root-Toot" diner, an excellent place to stop off 35 for fuel and then drive a short ways (about 3/4 mile) to the Root-Toot...you will be able to get an excellent breakfast, Lunch or Dinner...made the stop each time I used to head back to the UP from Texas...hope you can make it too.

Just wondering, Toivo, are you planning to take the beater up to Alaska, too? And to Hawaii? My '87 Mazda is on 310,200 miles now. How many on the beater? Good luck and Godspeed to you!
