I'd like to add a tribute memorial for all the military personnel who've already died in this war and all those yet to make the ultimate sacrifice. May peace come swiftly to that troubled region, so that all families may be reunited.

I would like to remember Guy Gerber, a sweet little 93 year old man who was a frequent visitor to the cycle, snowmobile and atv repair business that my husband and I own. He would ride in on his Honda Helix scooter. Unfortunately last Thursday he did not see the railroad signal and the arms came down, knocked him off his scooter into the path of the train. We will miss him so much. May he rest in peace.

By PJS, TX on Monday, March 31, 2003 - 09:53 am:

I'd like to add Eino Hannula. He was my great uncle. I also echo the comments regarding our military personnel. As a mother of a soldier in the Army Special Operations Forces in Afganistan, I am proud of and worried about our boys in uniform! My heart goes out to those families who have lost so much for our freedom and the freedom of the Afganistan and Iraq people.

Thanks for the tribute to those who have left us. It touches my spirit.

Each day our men and women in the military are in my prayers as well as their family members. This is a difficult time for all of them. May God speed their safe return home.

By Martha L., Mishawaka, IN on Monday, March 31, 2003 - 12:00 pm:

I would like to remember my father, William Howard Bergh, a lifetime resident of Keweenaw County. He so loved the Copper Country. Mom and my sister and I miss him so much since his "homegoing" on March 28, 1999. It is such a comfort to KNOW we will meet again in heaven some day!

By Donna Utzman, Muskegon, MI on Monday, March 31, 2003 - 12:16 pm:

Would like to remember an old and good friend of my family, Billy Wheeler. His parents owned Wheeler's Bar on Fifth Street in Calumet. He worked out of Wisconsin for Ford. The last few years he has been at his cottage home on Lakeshore Drive on Lake Superior. His funeral is today and I know he will surely be missed by his many friends and family.

By JAD, Oskar, MI on Monday, March 31, 2003 - 12:24 pm:

To Jodi from NY -- Check your USA map and find
Lake Superior. On the southern shore there is a large "finger" pointing NE. At the finger's tip is a village called Copper Harbor. At the base of the finger are twin towns called Hancock and Houghton. At the mid-point are twin towns called Calumet and Laurium. Also at the base of the finger is a waterway extending from the northwest to the southeast. The "finger" is The Keweenaw. The waterway gives the area its name: it is the Ojibwe (formerly known as Chippewa) word for "portage." The waterway was a main route for Native Americans and early explorers but the NW end was a swamp and had to be portaged. In the mid 1800's that area was dredged to make what is now known as the Keweenaw Waterway. The middle section of the waterway is a large lake named Portage Lake. The SE end was a river which was "straightened" and dredged. 500 and 750 ft. lake freighters frequently used the waterway as a short-cut and refuge from Lake Superior's storms. Now the 1000 ft. freighters cannot navigate it. Lake Superior, with Duluth, Minnesota on the west and the "Soo" (Sault Ste. Marie) locks on the east
carries more tonnage in shipping than the Panama Canal. Check your library for books about "The Copper Country", early copper mining and fur-trade in the USA.

By Rivera on Monday, March 31, 2003 - 12:48 pm:

Indeed let us remember our brave soldiers who have given all in this war and every past conflict, let us also remember their families who must bear the loss of a loved one. The least we can be is a grateful and supportive nation.

By cal, Oshkosh WI on Monday, March 31, 2003 - 12:48 pm:

I'd like to add my uncle, Clement Lundquist, to the memorial list. He was a lifelong resident of northern Menominee county.

By Alice, Ventura, CA on Monday, March 31, 2003 - 01:11 pm:

Thanks JAD, Oskar,MI for the info. I knew some of this, but it was nice to see it all again! I didn't know Ojibwe (formerly known as the Chippewa) or that Keweenaw was the word for portage. Makes sense!

And add in memoriam my aunt Erma Erickson of Greenland, MI, whose birthday would have been today also. She was loved by all.

By Pat, WI on Monday, March 31, 2003 - 01:16 pm:

Edward L. Kolka who died March 2, 1968 in Vietnam.

By MM LL MI on Monday, March 31, 2003 - 01:49 pm:

For my Mother, Rosemary LaBelle who would have also celebrated a birthday today. Her "homegoing" was 4-11-1999. She is missed by us all, but her memory still brings comfort. On a lighter note, my neice (my mother's first grandchild) also celebrates a birthday today. Happy birthday Jessica! What a birthday gift my mother was given.

By PA on Monday, March 31, 2003 - 02:58 pm:

To JAD, Oskar,MI: Thanks a million for letting the secret out. Now God's Country will be inundated with even more foreigners! :-)

By East Coast Foreigner on Monday, March 31, 2003 - 03:21 pm:

Thanks for the info JAD - don't worry PA I consider anything with a wind chill below "84 degrees" non-tourist areas.

Does Lake Superior have beaches and also isn't it the MOST shipwrecked Great Lake? But the least polluted?

Thanks.... it surprises me how pretty it looks - it was never a place I thought would be interesting till I started reading this board.

By Al,Ca. on Monday, March 31, 2003 - 03:39 pm:

To PA, most of those foreigners only show up in the summer and keep the area "green" with $'s

Bill Clay - U.S. Air Force - Korean War

In memorial and devotion to those who sacrifice to make and keep us free - yesterday, today, and tomorrow.

By A Yooper in Illinois on Monday, March 31, 2003 - 05:34 pm:

To EAST COAST FOREIGNER:

There are beautiful unspoiled beaches and
sand dunes as well as sandstone cliffs and
caves (see Pictured Rocks Nat'l Lakeshore)
along Lake Superior and the water is so clear
and cold that you can see the bottom even in
very deep water...(upwards of 30 feet).

It is one of the most gorgeous places in the
US in summer and winter (and in autumn the
foliage is equal to that of Vermont etc) but
summers are definitely more inviting to those
not used to the deep snow and cold.

And there's nothing more refreshing than
jumping into the clear, cold Lake Superior
waves from a sauna on the beach and
jumping right back out and into the sauna to
warm up!

By Alex Tiensivu, Georgia on Monday, March 31, 2003 - 06:55 pm:

May I please say that I am touched by this Memorial Page each month. What a wonderful thing to have each month, to remember our loved ones by.

By Ann in Mi. on Monday, March 31, 2003 - 06:56 pm:

To PA,
After people start talking about how lovely the CC is, I say, "Yes, it is, but sometimes the weather is bad and the bugs are awful." This usually elicits a lengthy discussion of how bad the black flies were the last time they visited. It works every time :)

By Svea, San Diego, CA on Monday, March 31, 2003 - 10:36 pm:

Martha Orquist of South Range, who passed away this month, was my aunt. A wonderful woman....sweet, gentle, caring, and kind. For many years she traveled with her "gentleman friends," Mr. Parkinson and Mr. Arthur(itis), and they were with her when I last saw her in 1994. Aunt Martha was preceded in passing by one of her daughters not too very long ago. Although I seldom saw her in my adult years, she is missed. She was a really neat lady and continues to live in my memory.

By Steve the Troll on Monday, March 31, 2003 - 11:00 pm:

By julie, MD on Wednesday, April 2, 2003 - 09:46 am:

I remember Dr. Ziegler, cardiologist right? If this is the right guy, I created a tricky situation for him when I was 9. I was supposed to be asleep during a catherization only the drugs weren't working. So, he promptly assigned a nurse at my head to scratch any itches and he went ahead and explained all the steps to a curious little girl. He was a sweetie!

There was a night, in Wisconsin, when the moon was full and the loons were calling down at the lake, and I and my wife were sitting in the adorondack chairs remembering what it was like when our kids were small. You know, before the time when they were constantly calling for one or the other of you, and when all you wanted was to have just the very next moment (not a long time) to relax and to not have to run after the kids. Well, that was the night when we chose to not rush to find out what they wanted or needed but, instead, just sat and looked at each other in the moonlight. Oh, did I mention that the full moon had come up in the midst of one of the children's crys? Well, it did. And we looked at each other and sighed. Just sighed. And looked again at the moon before we went back in. What a great night.
