Robert Torreano's great grandfather, Charles Pignocco, is somewhere among the mine crew above in this classic shoebox memory. Lot's of young faces in this group, apparently photographed after a light dusting of snow.
We've had more than a 'light dusting' the past couple of days here in Calumet. The second photo above was taken yesterday morning, after a couple feet of new snow had been dumped on Still Waters, the assisted living home from whence this daily feature originates. Many of our residents are children of miners themselves.
Buried somewhere in those snowbanks is the new resident van, which we were able to pick up last week. But it's not yet in service, waiting for the paperwork to clear. For Pasty Cam newcomers we should mention: this purchase was made possible through the generous support of visitors to this website. On behalf of the residents, staff and volunteers at Still Waters, our sincere thanks.
Oh, by the way, Toivo has Sunday off, a day of rest somewhere out in California, several days into his 50-state tour. Stay tuned in the weeks ahead for this unique look at the U.S. through the eyes of a yooper.
