Sunny day on Mont Ripley Saturday. Hazey in the morning. Jerry Keranen and I took a group of teens to the hill for the March group deal on rentals and lift tickets. The snow was good in the morning, but sticky in the afternoon--even too sticky for wax to be much help. The teens enjoyed themselves, even so.

IF anyone wants the recipe to make ROSE PLUTES -- CROATIAN WALNUT POVATICA---The recipes on the site with the STILLWATERS VAN--if yould like you can donate a buck towards the van for it--hopefully--thanks

By FC MI on Wednesday, March 19, 2003 - 08:19 am:

What a view on top picture! Good photography. Nice that they got out before the snow is gone. Good to see teens having good clean fun. You gentlemen should be commended in doing this. Bravo!

In that bottom left picture I see Jerry Keranen is still waxing eloquent. Also, happy birthday to Charlie, my favorite webmaster.

Sent the recipe post in twice for povotica on the van site--for some reason its not coming up in it--???????

By Charlie at Pasty Central on Wednesday, March 19, 2003 - 10:06 am:

C.C. Croatian, the recipe did come up, twice in fact. You may be hitting the 'back' key instead of returning to the Pasty Cam and re-entering Cam Notes for that day.

To my honeybun: thanks for the birthday wish.

This is how our young folks should enjoy life in our beautful Copper Country.....but I am reminded of our young heros poised to go into battle in about 9 hrs. and following their "fearless leaders" in the desert of Iraq. Our Copper Country cemeteries are filled with heros from other generations who preceded these young heros!! God Bless them all today and always!!!!.....Happy Birthday Charlie

How about a recipe for CARROT POVI? My gramma in Calumet used to make it and I can't seem to find anyone in the family who has the recipe.

By kls az on Wednesday, March 19, 2003 - 11:07 am:

Thanks for the recipe - what a great way to donate money and get an immediate return on investment. Good luck on the van purchase.

By Marvin, Bumbletown/Florida on Wednesday, March 19, 2003 - 11:17 am:

Thank you Mary Lou for saying something about our young heros. We must all put them in our prayers. Some of those young heros are friends of my daughters so this subject is very near to my heart.

To bring you all up to date Kathleen and I will be heading home to Bumbletown from Florida on May 1st. We are both so happy to be going home and starting our life together on our hill

Marvin,
If you were up on Bumbletown hill in '56 you would have seen the Paul Bunyan chair by Henry Pietila. It didn't make our next visit up north. I hope it kept someone warm that winter. My mom Katherine Pietila Johnson Singley and 7 other siblings were raised there.

By Marvin, Bumbletown/Florida on Wednesday, March 19, 2003 - 12:26 pm:

I remember the Bumbletown hill Paul Bunyan chair. As kids we sat in it many times with my parents and grandparents. My wife's uncle even talked to my dad about making a new chair someday. He has since passed away but the idea is not forgotten.

Please pray for our Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Marines that are protecting us here in the United States and fighting overseas.

I live next to and work at a Naval Air Station in central California that is manning 4 of the 6 aircraft carriers that are stationed over in the Gulf. We have 12 of the 13 seagoing squadrons deployed. That is over 4000 sailors and pilots deployed. We also have 13 hospital corpsmen deployed to the front line with Marine units that I personally work with. They are all faced with the unknown. Keep them in your prayers.

I am just taking a study break here at Cedarville University and was excited to see my sister in the Pasty Cam picture!! I heard that she went skiing this weekend, and it's good to see the group full of familiar faces. I wish I could be up there skiing today. I miss you all!!

Hey, Charlie....
And a great big Minnesota birthday wish for you. Grandma wishes you nothing but the best. Just think spring is here. Soon we'll be at Horse Expo. Tell that John, he'd better be stopping by to say hi. Last year we had snow that last weekend in April and the weather was as nasty as it comes. Let's hope this year for a fine weekend for the horses. Again, happy BD.

Keep our troops in your prayers. I just retired from the Veterans Administration on 12/31. Italked to a lot of vets over 30 years. Two of my co-workers were involved with special adapted housing for paraplegics. If I was having a bad day and one of these individuals came in the office for help, I knew I didn't have anything to whine about and the majority of them did not whine. It was an experience that made me realize how much I have to be grateful for. I live about 1 1/2 hours from Ft Campbell, KY, home of the 101st Screaming Eagles. Most of the 101st is already deployed and in the desert.

Fran,

These teens are actually from Calumet, Lake Linden, Dollar Bay, Houghton, Hancock, and the Soo. Our church is Bethany Baptist in Dollar Bay. Actually, the students are also from several churches in the Copper Country, and they include public school, Christian school, and home school students. It is a privilege and a blessing to work with them.

As I write in I am listening to radio reports of the initial strikes on Iraq. Our group meets on Wednesday evenings, and as we gathered tonight we took time to remember our brave military men and women in the Middle East in prayer. Some of our teens have friends and family who are deployed over there.

Happy birthday Charlie. Thank you for the Pasty Cam and for posting our pictures.

Ned20, Back in 1980, there was a cookbook published with nothing but everyone's favorite Upper Peninsula Recipes. There is a recipe for Chow Chow in there by a Amelia Gertz of Torch Lake BPW Club. I'm not sure if this book is still available, it was put out by Michigan Federation Business & Professional Women, Inc., Calumet, Michigan.

Have a recipy for mustard pickles that has celery, small onions, small cucumbers, cauliflower, and green peppers, all cut up, and covered with a cooked mustard sauce. Could that be the same?

Happy birthday, Charley.

I am really happy to see a picture of the P. B. chair on Bumbletown hill. In fact I was up there yesterday, and was thinking about the chair my parents took us to see in the early to mid 60's. When was the chair broken or destroyed?
The Pines in Copper Harbor now has a chair just like the one on Bumbletown.

By mickey, mi on Thursday, March 20, 2003 - 10:52 am:

Ned 20 - Here is a good CC chow chow recipe:
12 large cucumbers, peeled & cut into cubes
2 cups cauliflower, cut into small pieces
3 green peppers, cut into 1" pieces
2 red peppers, cut into 1" pieces
1 pound pickling onions
3 cups sugar
1/2 cup flour
1 tablespoon celery seed
1 tablespoon mustard seed
3 teaspoons tumeric
1 quart white vinegar
1 tablespoon dry mustard

Soak vegetables overnight in brine of 3 cups cold water and 1/2 cup kosher salt. Drain and rinse in the morning. Mix dry ingredients together and add vinegar. Cook 10 minutes on medium heat. Pour hot liquid over vegetables and put in jars. Process 10 minutes in water bath canner.

By Fran,Ga on Thursday, March 20, 2003 - 10:53 am:

NED20,I have the book Mike M mentioned. The recipe for Chow Chow sounds like what we ate. Here goes:
Ingredients-8-10 large cucumbers,6-8 celery stalks cut,1 qt small onions (pickling),3 red peppers(sweet),3 green peppers(sweet) 3 head cauliflower, 3 or 4 carrots opt.,1 or 2 finger peppers(hot),pickling salt,water to cover
Cut cukes, celery, peppers, cauliflower and carrots in cubes as desired.Cover with salt water(1/2 cup pickling salt to 1 qt water) Let stand several hours or overnight.Drain well.
SAUCE: 1cup flour,3 cups sugar,1 heaping T dry mustard, enough Tumeric to color, 2T celery seed 2T mustard seed, Curry powder(Optional) 1 1/2 qts. vinegar(5%),1tsp salt,
MAKE SAUCE by mixing dry ingred. into a large kettle, adding the seasonings. Gradually add the vinegar until well mixed and not lumpy.BRING TO A BOIL. Immeadiately add vegetables which have been drained and bring to the boiling point again. When boiling, immeadiately pack into sterile jars and seal. Depending upon the amt. of vegetables, the sauce recipe is scant. I(Amelia Gertz) usually make a recipe and a half or double it. Very tasty.

Note: Canning methods have probably changed in the 90's and 2000's.You could check with an Extension Agent or one of the Canning Jar Companies. Hope this is what you wanted and remembered!!

By Ned20 on Thursday, March 20, 2003 - 12:11 pm:

mickey and Fran:

Re the Chow chow recipe, thanks very much.

Sounds like what I remember with the cauliflower and mustard. A little experimenting with the ingredients should be fun.

And Fran, yes, the current approved canning method now calls for either processing the filled jars in boiling water or pressure canning, depending on the ingredients.
