This is my grandfather George E. Hoyem. He was the owner of The Hoyem Bakery in Calumet. I love this picture and wanted to share it. This is when he was delivering bread. I believe it is from the 1930's.

I love your website and look at it everyday. Thanks.

If that's a gas rationing sticker in the window, the picture was taken in the forty's

Another one of my favorite photos - the old black and white. Love the truck!

By Proud Yooper - MI on Sunday, March 16, 2003 - 12:13 pm:

Not to take away from this great photo, but if Toivo doesn't make it to WA soon - I am sending a search party to look for him. If I calculate right it is taking him two weeks + to get there. I guess I am anxious to hear of Tina's reaction when he shows up wanting the duct tape back. : )

By Pikkuleipa on Sunday, March 16, 2003 - 12:29 pm:

Proud- Toivo keeps checking in and is taking so long because he keeps stopping for breakfast and to shop for computers. And for oil, but there's nothing else you can do when the yoopermobile is thirsty.

That is a great picture, must be in someone's driveway. I love the houses in the background, too.

i just noticed the other guy (or half of him)
standing on the left of the pic. That sure is
a lot of snow!

By Charlotte, CA on Sunday, March 16, 2003 - 12:38 pm:

Thanks for posting my picture. I guess I got a few details wrong. The other guy that is cut off is my dad - Gordon. Thanks for your comments! Charlotte

Love the picture! Shows the steep sided snowbanks we would walk across til someboy's parent or neighbor hollered at us cause we messed up their shoveling.
Happy St Urho's day. Gosh, purple beer will be available in Pocatello today. Grasshoppers? In March? I always thought it was chasing Heikki Lunta back to the North so we could have spring.
Better check my facts before I head down to have a sample of Purple? beer. Don't want to misrepresent the glorious spring festival.

By Toivo, slept in at Coeur d'Alene, ID on Sunday, March 16, 2003 - 12:58 pm:

Happy St. Urho's Day!!

Check-out time again - - so I gotta hurry. They call this the "City by the Lake". Nice, but it's no Superior. With a good tail wind I could reach the BIG pond by tonight. I hear there a lot of Finns out here in the Northwest, but I haven't seen a whisper about St. Urho. Then again, no grasshoppers either.

By mi. dave on Sunday, March 16, 2003 - 01:02 pm:

I remember as a young boy in Fulton The bakery truck would come selling to the resident's and us kids would run after the driver baker can we have a bun. We would drive him nuts. If their would only be one or two of us he would sometimes give in and let us have a dounut.

By Proud Yooper - MI on Sunday, March 16, 2003 - 01:24 pm:

Toivo - I thought Coeur d'Alene was beautiful when we were out West a few years ago. Ofcourse, nothing compares to the U.P. To find Finns in your travels remember to say "Kiitos" and if there is a Finn present - they will look up or start a conversation.

By EM,MI on Sunday, March 16, 2003 - 01:36 pm:

Love the picture and the truck. Does Toivo ever plan on returning to the Keweenaw or is this a full time venture with him.

By Nita, Northwestern CA on Sunday, March 16, 2003 - 04:57 pm:

Toivo,
The Finns are probably on the western slopes of the Cascade mountains. Many are loggers and also fishermen. A good number of Finns came down to Humboldt County by way of Washington state during the 1920, through 1950's.They are excellent loggers and fishermen. They came to help harvest our forests (that everyone insists have all been cut down.....NOT TRUE.) My neighbor is an 99 year old Finn gentleman who has been very successful logger,( still works) but in my opinion is also an environmentalist. So enjoy your trip to Seattle and look about I am sure you will find a few Finns.

By Mary Lou on Sunday, March 16, 2003 - 05:37 pm:

EM,MI..I am worried, too..I mean when a girl accepts duck-tape for a Valentine present, that is serious stuff, my questions are: #1... will she let Toivo come back, #2 will he want to come back?? #3 Will she come back with Toivo?......

By Jim Copper Country on Sunday, March 16, 2003 - 06:51 pm:

What MAKE and YEAR is this truck....complete with a breadbox on back? I betcha it could "pass" the modern-era 5mph impact tests with flying colors!

By BWS, TVC Mi. on Sunday, March 16, 2003 - 09:00 pm:

How about a '38 or'39 Chevrolet or GMC? That radiator kinda looks like it would fit a Gm or Chevy.

By Joe Dase Houghton MI on Sunday, March 16, 2003 - 09:17 pm:

I maybe wrong but if I remember right that truck sat in Demar's Auto Salvage for years and years until they cleaned the place out recently, there were lots of other pannel and delivery trucks in the yard also if I remember corectly

By Fran,Ga on Sunday, March 16, 2003 - 09:41 pm:

When I was a kid Marta's Bakery would come around selling their day old stuff. I think I have the name right.Anyway us kids would be so excited to have day old store bakery!!!My Mom was an excellent baker and we always had good things around but I guess being store bought made it better! Go Figure!! This was in Dollar Bay.

By Ken from da UP on Monday, March 17, 2003 - 12:29 am:

Were those big Snogos around at that time? The bank looks like it was cut with a BIG snowblower.
When I was a little kid in Paavola, mid/late 40s, the Snogo would come during the night and open the street past our house. The road wasn't opened until some one needed wood or coal for the heater stove. That exhaust pipe on the blower engine would have blue flames coming out of it. Impressive for a youngster. Hauskka Urhon Päivää! We sure had a good time at the St. Urho's Dance in Ishpeming this evening. Good crowd there at the Elk's.

By Yooper in Indiana on Monday, March 17, 2003 - 07:55 am:

Hoyem's bakery was in the 300, even numbered side, of Hecla Street in Laurium,,,,,not Calumet if I remember correctly.

By mh, mi on Monday, March 17, 2003 - 09:24 am:

I remember George Hoyem from the 40's. They made the best jelly donuts (pershings) coated with sugar.

By Carl, Lake Linden on Monday, March 17, 2003 - 12:27 pm:

Charlotte,
It's a very nice photo of your father and the old delivery van. I got to know your dad in the early 50s. He was an avid archer and helped organize the Torch Lake Archery club in Lake Linden. We had a field archery course up above Lake Linden near the old quarry where we would practice shooting and would hold tournaments there. We also would shoot above Lindells in the winter. We had one of our meetings at his cottage in Bootjack. He was also a great fly fisherman and made some of his own fly rods and tied his own flies. We had some very good times together.

To BWS,TVC & JIM, COPPER COUNTRY
To answer the question on the make of truck. It seems to me I can see a V-8 logo on top of the grill making it a Ford around mid or early 30's. Maybe we need a closer view be more accurate.

By Carl, Lake Linden on Monday, March 17, 2003 - 01:42 pm:

Charlotte,
Sorry, I goofed. I meant to day Grandfather, Not father.

By John Byrka, Michigan on Tuesday, March 18, 2003 - 06:50 am:

After looking through the various car reference books I believe this truck to be a 1937 Ford.

By Jen, FL on Tuesday, March 18, 2003 - 02:51 pm:

What a great picture! My family's (Burkholder/Niemi) cottage is out in Bootjack, right next door to the Hoyem's. They are really great people! Nice to see a familiar name and face today!

By chris on Thursday, March 27, 2003 - 03:50 pm:

Speaking of old bakeries, does anyone remember a fella by he name of John Hill( given the Finnish name) delivering bakery for either Kentala's or Vienna Bakery?? He use to drive a black panel truck to Jacobsville and always came to our farm. We could buy for 5 cents what today would look like an elephant ear. Those were so good!!
This would have been in the 1950's.
Just thought I'd pick your brain...the good old days, filled with innocence and fun...
