Across the bay from Ashland, Wisconsin, is Washburn - apparently the winter home of the Isle Royale Queen. Back on Super Bowl Sunday, we witnessed the races on the ice of the Bay between the two towns.

Does anyone have any knowledge of a Minong Lodge on Isle Royale? If so the ownership? This would be from before it was nationalized.

Congratulations to the Calumet Copper Kings! They just beat Cranbrook 4 to 3 in overtime in the semi-finals of the State Hockey Championship. Final game tomorrow.

Hi, Charlie. Washburn is just an occasional home for the Queen. We bring her down to the marina there to do hull work and get her inspected. Most years she spends the winters in the ice on Portage Lake at the Houghton Municipal Dock up the waterfront from the Ranger III. She'll be sailing back to Copper Harbor in early May and the run to Isle Royale will be starting in mid-May. By the way, if people are interested in photos of Isle Royale from summer 2002, I have posted a photo essay on last year at wwww@msu.edu/user/kilpela. I know this boat..she gave my husband and I one of the nicest evenings we ever had under the sailing of Capt. Donnie! Took the sunset cruise on her and was able to take us within 100yrds or so, of the Mesabi Miner. A wonderful time indeed! I would highly recommend to anyone to take the sunset cruise aboard her from Copper Harbor, Mi.!

This question doesn't pertain to the picture above but I was just curious when I looked at the web cam pic of the life bridge and noticed the time was off by 2 hrs. Is the web cam having problems or is the time not set correct. just wanted to inform someone at Pasty.com if they didn't notice it

Copper Kings Rock! I saw the photo and story of the two gentlemen that are 100 & 103 years young in today's Daily Mining Gazette. Both are residents of Stillwaters. Happy Birthday young 'uns. As for Toivo and being the Mel Gibson look-alike that he is - he should make the Hollywood scene and sign a few autographs while enroute to WA. Maybe he could make a few bucks to buy a new car to be sure he makes it back to the UP.

Jonathan only had to travel to Marquette but Toivo has to travel 2000 mi. to Washington state. I don't know what conclusion to draw.

From the looks of the old beater, Toivo's gonna need that roll of duct tape to make the trip home! Might wanna pick up some more baling wire, too, to complete his spare parts reserves.

It's always amazed me how just a few of those little jack stands can hold up a boat (ship?) of this size. Maybe Superior is a little higher now that all those boats are in dry dock for the winter :o)

The Upper Peninsula is the top one third of the state of Michigan, bounded by Lake Superior on the north, Lake Huron on the east, Lake Michigan on the south and north of the state of Wisconsin on the west side. We who were born here and live here are "Yoopers", and proud of it!

Very pretty land up there but the cold and snow? how long do they last? Do y'all get stir crazy up there? I would imagine by March people start heading down south just to see the sun. Yikes!!!!

Eh? That is a pretty common puncuation in Ontario. Ya, is usually the anglized version of the German "Ja" (sounds like ya). Da has been covered and is very common in the upper Midwest - "da Bears". The Yooper dialect has is sources in many different cultures and languages. It will probably fade as we are now so mobile that local dialects are being diluted.
As a Cheesehead decendant of Yoopers stuck in central Illinois, I would take a UP or Northern Wisconsin winter anytime over the totally useless winters we have here. Not much you can do in winters that are storms interspaced with mud and slush, then on a bad day you get a lousy ice storm and no power.

While shopping in Fairport, Alabama...the clerk had to bring two women over to translate what I was asking her....I felt that I was in a foreign country....

PS....Capt. Kilpela, wasn't the "Queen" built here in Escanaba by the T. D. Vinette Boat Builders?...Dale and Ruth are friends and I remember them telling me about her...what is the schedual for next summer???

Minong lodge on Isle Royale: The Tobin Harbor Resort (Later called Minong Lodge)was operated by a Swede-Finn by the name Gust Mattson. He and his wife operated the resort from 1901 till approximately 1910. He then sold it to a school teacher from Calumet by the name of Martini. He kept it for a couple of years then sold it to Captain Ed Smith. Smith operated the resort until he died in 1916. Mrs.Helena Smith and her two daughters operated the resort till the middle 30's. It was then taken over and acquired by the State before it went into National Park Service ownership.

If Toivo is taking the direct route to Washington State he will never hit California "enroute".
U.S. 2 goes straight across and ends in Everette, Wa.
(North of Seattle, South of Canada.) Lots of Finns out in that area. He should stop in Carnation, he'll feel right at home.

When I was a student at Northland College I lived in Washburn. Whenever I got really homesick and wasn't able to get home, I would take a walk down to the marina and visit the Queen.

As I remember the Isle Royale Queen, It was yellow and smaller. I used to watch this boat come in to Rock Harbor every day. Loved listening to the diesels! Also remember the IRQ II. It was a fish tug. What ever happened to that boat

The only ship I have ever seen is the KEWEENA STAR.
